Not so. Osteria Coppa, 20 miles south in the heart of San Mateo, is worth the trip. Homemade pasta and cured meats (salumi etc) are their claim to fame, but everything is delicious, from the contorni (vegetable side dishes) to the desserts. Reasonable prices, including on their iPad-presented wine list, and attentive, knowledgable service. The atmosphere is dignified but informal, a bit too noisy and crowded to rate as romantic perhaps. The food was delicious and well-prepared and the service was excellent. They even gave moms a free glass of prosecco. They had a kid's menu with too much food (and few choices) for little ones - french toast and eggs and bacon and fruit. We will make this a special occasion place as the pre fixe was $35 for adults and $14.95 for kids. Loved the smoked trout salad with beets, the halibut with dungeness crab and a light lemon sauce for main and tiramisu for dessert. We both had the skirt steak - it was possibly the most tender cut of this meat I've ever eaten, and was great, served with creamy polenta and greens. We added an order of brussel sprouts to share, it was a wonderful meal and evening, at one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. We stayed late to talk and was never rushed, never felt we overstayed our welcome which was nice since they are so heavily booked. The waiter brought us the pizza stand only to say "oops, too early" and took it back but did bring it back when the time was right. This was a good touch. Halibut tartare (awesome), House cured bacon pizza (wow, this is a treat), Pappardelle pasta (somewhat salty but tasty just the same) and squid salad (not on website menu, squid is grilled and is awesome!). Wine list is mostly Italian wines so ask for recommendations for the correct pairing. Corkage is available but their wine list seems substantial enough.
