Diner Reviews
  • "Dined here with my Mom prior to a concert at MSG. Service was great, not rushed. Sat on balcony level which added to the ambience. Homemade pasta (we both had tagliatelle w/ shrimp/arugula in a yummy light tomato sauce. Bruschetta apetizer was great. We thought price was very good for the quality of food. Nice wine list and very reasonably priced too.Would definitely go back."

  • "Love this place! The lobster ravioli is the best. It's a perfect spot for a lunch meeting or just lunch with your coworkers."

  • "Great location within Broadway to eat before or after the theatre; except you wouldn't really want to eat here. I'm certain my teenagers could make better pasta, from a frozen package. Bland and lackluster - 95 percent of my reviews are great; just not this one."

  • "Food was good, service was wonderful, and we had more than enough time to make our show."

  • "My husband and I went here after a matinee showing "Of Mice and Men". Had a wonderful dinner. The restaurant was very cozy, and the food was amazing. I had the homemade Pappardelle pasta with roasted lamb which was just perfect! My husband had the linguine with seafood and loved that also. We had the calamari appetizer but didn't love that, it was a bit overdone. Service was very attentive, and tables were not too on top of one another! Would definitely come back next time in the theater district. For dessert we had the Tiramisu and the apple turnover - also delicious! If you are in the neighborhood make a reservation and you will not be disappointed."

  • "Our family had an exceptional meal at Osteria al Doge on June 28th. We were looking for somewhere near the Stephen Sondheim Theatre (one block away), with great Italian food. All our dinners were delicious… The appetizer that evening was figs with prosciutto and cheese..simple and tasty. The mains I shared were the Spinach Pappardelle with roasted lamb, black olives and rosemary and the Branzino with roasted garlic and clams. Our server, Simone, was particularly attentive to serving our dinners so that we had plenty of time before our show to celebrate a special birthday. And the best part was the price of the dinner…well-priced for a higher end restaurant. I would recommend it in a heartbeat, especially for anyone going to the theatre."

  • "Great location for theater. Ambience was nice, but a little loud. Not terribly friendly for children. Food was ver tasty, not exceptional ."

  • "We did not expect such a great dining experience so close to Broadway. Our server was tremendous. Food was great. The bartender went out of his way to make a non-alcoholic drink for one of our party."

  • "Fantastic Italian near the theater district, usually busy so make a reservation."

  • "I keep returning to Osteria al Doge for pre-theater dining. The food and service are very good and they are aware of your timing to make the theater. It is conveniently close to the theater district. They are very accommodating. For example, we were caught in traffic and were half an hour late. I called to advise and they made me feel very comfortable and seated us as soon as we arrived."

  • "Excellent tricolore salad and Napolitana pizza. Service was prompt and attentive. Very limited wine list with mostly mediocre Italian wines and a few American choices."

  • "I spent the weekend with my daughter. After a fabulous day together, we decided to have a delicious meal at Osteria al Doge. We couldn't have ended the weekend with a better choice. From the minute we were escorted to our table to our dessert, we enjoyed every single minute. We had a terrific server who was very attentive and helpful with our choices. The food was delicious! Kudos to the chef who prepared our appetizers & main course with pride. The presentation was beautiful too. Thank you for a memorable evening!"

  • "The waitress was horrible!!! Had no knowledge of any of the dishes. The manager was apologizing for her lack of experience. They should not put a new waitress on the floor alone to serve tables for pre-theater!!!"

  • "We did not have a good experience. The server got one of our orders wrong. The other order was grilled salmon which was supposed to be on the rare side. It was raw. Cold on the inside, barely warm on the outside. Though the restaurant is pretty, the noise level was intolerable. My companion and I sat side by side and could not hear each other. Neither of us would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "The food was only so-so. The location and service made making the 8:00 show easy. If you need a quick meal in the theater district, this works."

  • "We were in NYC for just one night, for our 25th wedding anniversary. We had tickets to a play/musical we had long wanted to see ("After Midnight" -- amazing) and chose this restaurant from suggestions on TripAdvisor. We are so happy we did. From the welcome at the front door, the stroll through the lovely downstairs restaurant to the charming upstairs balcony seating, the table service and, of course, the food, it was a treat for all the senses. (Stinco D'Agnello was perfect, as were the vegetables and mashed potatoes.). We are already planning our next visit, with dinner at Osteria al Doge the focus."

  • "We arrived early so we could catch a show. My daughter had lobster with a pasta that was a thick tubular noodle. I had Italian sea bream (orato?). Mine has a great sauce with mushrooms. The glass of wine was reasonably priced and very good. Coffee and cappuccino were both prepared perfectly. I have eaten here a few times and will be back"

  • "We had the pork shank and also the monk fish special. Both were done to perfection. We dined on a Wednesday early evening after attending a broadway matinee so everyone took their time. Great choice of appetizers and super desserts. This is one of our favorite restaurants when we are in the city."

  • "We've always come to 'the Doge' as my family calls it as our pre-theatre dinner and it's always a great meal. Once again had a solid and fun experience before our last show and will definitely be returning in the future!"

  • "Great food, and perfect for dining before going to the theater...right down the street from the Schubert Theater."

  • "Wait staff asked about wine several times unnecessarily. Food was good and service was quick."

  • "Our dining experience was excellent except for the very noisy party of 6 women who seemed to have no consideration for anyone dining. They were very loud. That, however, didn't interfere with the excellent food."

  • "We went here before theater and I was expecting a touristy place but was so suprised to find that it was an adorable place with wood pine tables in the front, charming tables above in the alcove and amazing menu and food! It is casual, but charming! Our waitress was suberb and we managed to have a leisurely dinner and be out in time for theater. There are a lot of tables packed into the restaurant but the energy was lively rather than loud and we were able to chat and relax while we diined. I had grilled salmon which was fantastic and the people I was with had the veal scallopine which they said was excellent as well. The wines were excellent and affordable. I was a great dining experience like finding a little gem on Broadway!"

  • "Tables so close together that I had a waiters stomach or rear knocking food off table. Veal was tough and my husbands lamb was over cooked. Food had no taste. We were rushed thru the whole meal. The next morning my husband told me he had found a bug in the salad! I had thought we were going to a wonderful restaurant and were greatly disappointed."

  • "Osteria al Doge is conveniently located near the Broadway theaters. While it doesn't offer a bargain prix fixe menu like many other Theater District restaurants, the food and service surpasses that found in many of its competitors, and the prices aren't unreasonable for the area."

  • "Great, food and very convenient to broadway. Service was excellent, our server gave us great recommendations, from the wine to the daily specials. Very pleasant and friendly ."

  • "The restaurant is lovely. The bar is magnificent. The food choices were excellent, and the specials for the day outstanding. We chose the fish of the day with the most delicious fennel and the side of rabe was perfect. "

  • "I was seated, when my guest arrived, the maitre 'd did not tell him that I was in the restaurant. As a result, we almost missed each other for lunch. "

  • "My party of three has an after show early dinner on a Saturday. The restaurant began quiet and the service excellent, but as the time passed the place filled, and the noise level increased and the service decreased. That is to be expected. I was not impressed with the food. We shared a fried calamari and shrimp appetizer. The breading on both was boring. The sauce was good and made it more palatable. Ironically, my standard menu item of veal scallopini was more expensive the the two specials that my friends ordered. The veal was tasty, but not for the price. The pasta special and the chicken special were good, but I was not blown away. The chocolate mousse and a caramel and vanilla gellato we had for dessert was good."

  • "Three of us enjoyed a delicious pre-theatre brunch in this relatively quiet and very pretty setting. Eggs Benedict was prepared beautifully and served with crisp little roasted potatoes, a nice complement. Their chocolate mousse is the best I've ever had---- and my friends agreed they felt the same!
