Diner Reviews
  • "Osteria al Doge never disappoints with its food. The branzino is outstanding as are all the pastas, and yummy desserts. The noise level is too loud for my ears so it's difficult to have a conversation among your tablemates. It's a great place if you're going to the theater, or just meeting people who commute to/from Grand Central Station."

  • "The folks at Osteria al Doge couldn't have been more accommodating to us. They seated us where we preferred and were quick, efficient and polite at every step. The restaurant is gorgeous, and the food delicious."

  • "We ate on this restaurant on a Saturday evening. After ordering our food, the server brought us a bread basket-no butter. Other tables had olive oil on their tables. I requested some olive oil and she poured a dab of oil on our plates (one was not even the bread plate) and proceeded to walk away with the bottle. We had an appetizer and 2 entrees. Food at best was mediocre. One entree was salmon and the 2nd was a fish with pasta. For starters there was hardly any pasta on the seafood/pasta dish. When we requested Parmesan cheese, her reply was Italians don't eat Parmesan with fish in a tone with attitude. We are both Italian. When leaving, I mentioned this to the manager upon leaving and he had nothing to make the situation better."

  • "The bread basket had the crossitini and all the breads fresh and crunchy I took some home made Started off with fruits de mare spaghetti very nice and piquant Had the special grilled chicken with proscuitto and fotina cheese WOW Just melted in my mouth and the gravy for soping with Italian bread my my Moved onto chocolate moose pretty good stuff- Got a little free sample plate took that home too The wine glasses are pricy but its nyc Broadway-at least they fill the glass Go with the Riesling or the pinot Giogio Nice place, spacious , can have an intimate conversation and always dependable"

  • "We had dined here for brunch before and it was delightful. However, dinner is another matter. We were seated upstairs as it was billed as "quieter"....than what I would ask, a circus? Noisy, cramped, waiters bumping into chairs, no,no no, no, no ,no. Serve fewer diners with a bit more room between tables. Maybe you'll make less money for the evening, but I think overall you will have more repeat customers."

  • "This place holds up after years of competition. Great food, service, ambiance. Neighborhood favorite!"

  • "This place seriously caters to the Broadway theater crowd: they are super quick and efficient aout getting one fed and out the door in time for one's show. Unfortunately, the food is terribly insipid and the service while quick is not very welcoming. And for place of its size two gender-specific single staff bathrooms is insufficient."

  • "First time trying this lovely Italian restaurant near the theater district and Town Hall. Service was efficient, food was well-prepared. All members of our party were happy with their entrees. We didn't linger, and had no appetizers or dessert, so bill was quite reasonable. They definitely know how to get you in and out in a timely way. Would definitely go back."

  • "Nice atmosphere, food was good value for the money. Great location for theater."

  • "We have eaten at Osteria a number of times and were disappointed in this latest experience. The tables are jammed together all down the center causing obnoxious bumping by staff, heavy dense traffic, blocked passageways, and near bedlam service. Do not let them seat you in the middle tables, especially the one closest to the bar. The food was average. We have had better experiences here in the past, but they have appear to have lost their sense of attentive service and have become a place that packs in theater goers and offers mediocre food with half hearted interest."

  • "We had a wonderful lunch on Saturday. We had not seen each other in a very long time so, we were prepared to stay a while at the table to catch up. The food was wonderful as was the service. We never felt rushed. We sat there for almost 3 hours and had a wonderful afternoon."

  • "Heard good things about this restaurant and I overall enjoyed my experience here. My only complaint was the portions, I ordered the penne with vegetables and there was literally a handful of pasta."

  • "Food and service were very good. Wait staff very attentive. We sat 3 tables from the door and although there were two doors it was cold and damp when the door opened."

  • "Everything was excellent. The service was very attentive and friendly, the food was superb, and the atmosphere was lovely. Although it was during the height of lunch time, we were not rushed."

  • "Had lunch with my mother here after meeting her at Port Authority. It was a classic NYC lunch experience - bustling with business men in suits and couples on their way to the theater. The service was fantastic and the food delicious. We split the tricolore salad and she had the special pasta (lamb ragu on homemade spinach pasta) and I had the ricotta spinach ravioli. Both hit the spot with tender, flavorful fresh pasta and delicate sauces. If you're unlucky enough to be in this neighborhood, this place is a welcome reprieve from the madness of Times Square."

  • "Nothing great. Decent sized portions and good service. Convenient to theater. Bit overpriced for what it is. One dish came on a plate that must have had soap residue so entire dish had soapy taste and had to be returned. Someone else at the same table had the same item and it was fine so we knew it was the plate. Waiter did not apologize and nothing was done to compensate for the person at our table having to wait for her dinner while the rest of us were done."

  • "I've never had a bad meal here. The food is always fresh and delicious. I've recommended Oteria al Doge to friends, whenever they ask, "Where can I eat that's close to Broadway?" They have always thanked me for the the recommendation, and raved about the food. It's open a little later than most restaurants in the area, so you can reserve after a show, too. Good Venetian food, with excellent risotto and pastas, and many savory fish and meat dishes."

  • "We had a group of 7 and chose the Osteria al Doge for dinner before seeing an 8pm broadway show. The waiter asked if we were seeing a show and he timed our meal perfectly for gettting to the show. The food was very good and reasonably priced for a New York City restaurant. The location is very conveinient. I would highly recommend the Osteri al Doge."

  • "Great location for out of town Broadway theatergoers with a convenient parking garage in the same building. Excellent waitstaff and prompt service with nice menu selections. Comfortable booth seating on request. A little too loud for romantics and only two single restrooms with trash overflowing in the men's room. Still my choice for Broadway theatre."

  • "we made a very last minute online reservation and were pleasantly suprised. good service and delicious food, i had spinach and ricotta raviolli and it was so fresh and melt in mouth, my partner had lamb shank which he said was great. in great location close to all broadway shows."

  • "One of the best Italian restaurants that I have had the pleasure of eating at. Atmosphere makes you feel like you are in Italy. Food and service were absolutely outstanding. This was my second visit, and although the last one was several years ago, this restaurant did not disappoint. Excellent!"

  • "We went pre theater on a Sunday at 5:00 PM. It was quiet when we first walked in, but started to fill nicely for an early Sunday meal. Our service was excellent. Our salad was quite large and we were able to share it. My risotto with a sausage ragu was was a large portion and delicious! I would highly recommend it you are in the theater district."

  • "We went before a Broadway show and this location is right in Times Square. It is in walking distance to the theaters and the food was great. We went one night to sit at the bar and enjoy wine. The bartender was extremely friendly and the wine and bread sticks were great. We got a seat upstairs the night we went for dinner and it was really nice overlooking the rest of the restaurant."

  • "A great choice for pre-theatre dining. Food is much better than many of the run of the mill Italian spots int he theatre district. Service is prompt. This time, we felt a little rushed as the courses came out a bit too quickly, but the food remained very, very good. Hard not to order the pasta with veal ragout - my absolute favorite - but the special ravioli was excellent this time!"

  • "I've been to this eatery at least 5 times and it has always exceeded my expectations. Unfortunately, this time my experience was less than I expected. My grilled chicken entree was dry and tasteless. However, I will go back again."

  • "Went here prior to a show nearby. Very satisfied with whole experience. This long time NYC resident would categorize this as an authentic NYC restaurant . Nice touch was the small plate of cookies which came with the latte's we ordered and the coffee was nice and hot."

  • "Perfectly fitted into the periphery of Times Square, it would be easy to walk past it if you were not looking for it. As with most NYC restaurants, the small nondescript front entrance belies a spacious dining area with intimate seating. The staff are prompt, extremely polite and welcoming, prompt and thorough. Our waitress was completely knowledgeable every aspect of the menu, from ingredients to preparation, and her first question to us was "Are you going to a show tonight after dinner, and if so, what time?", so as to insure us a complete dining experience with time to spare for our evening Broadway plans. The food was exceptional, as was the service, and a balcony table for two, overlooking the dinner area below, is the place to be."
