  • "I like Osmanthus for many of the same reasons why I like nearby Soi 4: skillfully executed, formula-breaking Asian flavors: trout fried rice; a simple but satisfying tea leaf salad; gently sichuan-peppercorned mapo tofu; and many really nice-looking meat dishes that I haven't tried because I'm vegetarian. Tasty, creative cocktails, and thai-tea crème brûlée is hard to resist for dessert. I actually like the atmosphere at Osmanthus better than Soi 4: Osmanthus feels much less suburban."

  • "Yes, the menu range through several Asian cuisines, but each dish appears to be chosen for its own sake and very carefully prepared. Like many other diners, I particularly recommend the (fermented) tea-leaf salad and the flash-fried Brussels sprouts.."

  • "Excellent menu, ambiance and service. Was nervous about trying Osmanthus because I was able to get reservations when other restaurants had none. Lucky for me it was simply because people are not yet aware of this gem! This wont be the case for long. The restaurant was full, I'm guessing due to walk ins. My party especially enjoyed the Salmon, Purple Yam and Curry meal which we ordered twice. Everything we tried was amazing so I'm sure the same goes for the rest of the menu. The small details such as cloth napkins as a clue as to the level of quality you will find at Osmanthus, but at a reasonable price. Try it, you wont regret it!"

  • "The food here is Asian tapas style (small plates) that can be shared. It's fantastic. The Brussels Sprouts with salt pork and honey and Sriracha sauced is out of this world great as are the curry shrimp. The beef and chicken and vegetarian dishes are excellent as well. This restaurant is a real treat and serves very tasty, memorable food. Enjoy!"

It's a real treat to have in the neighborhood. If you have to chose between Box and Bells and Osmanthus, Osmanthus wins hands down: this is a delightful restaurant. enjoy."

  • "After reading Yelp reviews we weren't sure this would be a good fit for us. We like to eat! But we were pleasantly surprised. Three of shared four plates and it was plenty, although we could not resist trying the Thai iced tea creme brulee and we were happy we did. Actually we were happy with everything, although our two favorites were the Brussels sprouts and the dry-style wings. Delish! Plan to return."

  • "Valentine's Day was a good day to visit Osmanthus. We did have a reservation and didn't have to wait at all for our table. The food was very good - although we ordered too much (fine to take home and have the next day though). This was our second visit but the food was much better than the first time, which was shortly after the restaurant opened. Dan Dan noodles were quite spicy, but that was fine by us. The pork belly was delicious, with just the right amount of heat and a special starter - chicken wing stuffed with minced pork, also outstanding. The service also was friendly and prompt, even on this busy night. The noise level is high, but not impossible to hear. We would recommend it."

  • "Four of us went the other night and enjoyed Osmanthus a lot. Know that although delicious, the "artisanal" cocktails are very small. Everything we had was bursting with flavor and well executed, but there wasn't enough variety for a non meat eater. Even if you want chicken, there are two different wing preparations, and the special was another (delicious!) wing dish. Anyhow, it's a good little spot, some small dishes were plenty big enough to share, which is what they encourage. One thing; the tuna tartar with avocado, although tasty, came in a lot of lovely gingery broth, and was hard to eat with chopsticks. Oddly, a spoon would have been the way to eat that one. Check it out. It's hard to see because there's no sign, just a metal awning."

  • "We were bummed that Nan Yang was gone and in its place stood.....Osmanthus. Not to worry. Great decor and fabulous, creative food. If you're a garlic lover the green beans with fried garlic and garlic noodles are worth the price of admission. We'll be back for sure."

  • "The neighborhood and others miss the previous Nan Yang Burmese restaurant and send good wishes to the retired owner. The new owners have done a nice job on the tasteful interiors. I had the Jia Jiang Mein noodle dish which was good but could have had a little more brightness or acid. I can imagine ordering it take-out. The wait person was cheerful however she should have asked if we wanted dessert or tea or anything else before she brought the bill."

  • "went for lunch; and we were the only ones in the restaurant -- everything was excellent! brussel sprouts, string beans, fried chicken wings, fried spare ribs, don don noodles, fried rice, ma po tofu -- flavorful, filling, a great addition to the Rockridge neighborhood. Would recommend that they create lunch plates (eg. protein, rice, plus veggie) as the family style plates don't work well and are rather expensive. It may help increase foot traffic."

  • "Ate here two days in a row because I just can't figure it out. How can some of the food be so good and other dishes be so mediocre? Salmon with purple sweet potatoes and curry: delicious. mapo tofu: just weird. Smoked trout fried rice: elegant and tasty sausage fried rice: off-tasting Service is consistently great, decor is nice enough, location is fabulous, in between Rockridge and Elmwood, right where something is needed. I just hope they can narrow the menu down to just the good things."

  • "Food was hit or miss but mostly hit. Service was excellent. Attentive and genuinely friendly. Small wine list with some great picks. Try the Rioja and the Giesen Sauvignon Blanc, they go great with the foods here. We will be back and hopefully by then the kitchen will have worked out the kinks."

  • "We did family style and had a bunch of different plates. The selection had a lot of spicy options. We liked the fried ribs, although they could have used a touch of spice. The eggplant dish was definitely an all-around hit. The garlic noodles were great, could have used an addition of meat, and the cod fried rice was pretty tasty too."

  • "This former Burmese restaurant has done a lovely job of redecorating, creating cozy booths and tables for mostly parties of 4. Asian in feel with terrific service. Food is Asian inspired with a fairly limited menu, but everything was flavorful, distinct and delicious. Favorites were eggplant and garlic noodles. Food is relatively quick and made to share family style. Friendly servers who were not intrusive."

  • "The food was excellent and the service was first rate. They were very generous with the Sichuan pepper corns which on its own would be enough to get my wife and I to come back, but the food was also excellent all around. The dry fired chicken wings were great as were the pork belly and the noodles and the wine list had several good options for spicy Asian food. My wife couldn't get enough of the hamachi. We are thrilled to have this new gem in the neighborhood and will definitely be coming back soon."

  • "Waitperson is delightful. Hostess was unfamiliar with the menu and with the ingredients involved (she needs much more prep!). The fried rice was bland and underseasoned. The avocado-tuna lst is lovely, as is the fried wings. The beef with kabocha was mostly kabocha (could use more beef for the price). Service is attentive and the space redesign is wonderful."

  • "A couple of dishes were very good but don't even try to eat the mapo tofu. Something is just wrong there. Same goes for the sausage fried rice. Something just tasted off. Service was great and they have an incredible Rose there for about $10 a glass."

  • "This restaurant is brand spanking new, taking the place of Nan Yang, a Burmese restaurant that was a mainstay in the Rockridge for nearly two decades. The food at Osmanthus is very good, reminiscent of Beetlenut on Union Street in San Francisco. We had the eggplant, basil and garlic, which was excellent. Also the Brussels Sprouts with some type of Asian pancetta and a honey-Sriracha sauce stood out, as did the deep fried ribs with garlic. The shrimp toasts were good, but probably needed a sauce to accompany them. The dessert, a green tea creme Brulee was outstanding and a perfect, and light, treat to share for two to end the meal. The restaurant has a full bar and fun cocktails. We highly recommend Osmanthus and wish it success."

  • "New Asain influenced restuarant wuth Inviting great new decor. Too bad they placed the bar I'm the back and not upfront as an invitation to customers to come in & have a drink and a few small plates. We liked the menu offering but some dishes fell short. From the cold plates we had the hamachi with Thai chilis in ponzu , a dish that would have been great if the hamachi was fresher. The mouth watering chicken too would have been better if it wasn't bathed in the chili oil but drizzle of chili oil topped with a sprig of cilantro as I have had it in Asia. the maps tofu- a simple dish went wrong with a load of black pepper topping the dish and a weird sauce it was cooked in,. Shrimp toast, dried fried beans and chili broth noodles were good."

  • "Some of the food was fantastic, but some dishes just seemed thrown together. The hamachi appetizer looked like it was scraps of fish left over from the filet. The brussel sprouts dish wasn't enough to feed my pet turtle. On the other hand the raw tuna appetizer was beautiful and delicious and the Thai creme brûlée was outstanding. The service was great. Very warm and attentive, although they seemed understaffed. There seemed to be only two servers and a manager, but everything came to us on time. This restaurant should stop being so cheap, hire more staff, and get a kitchen consultant because some of the food is really, really good, but the execution is lacking."
