Diner Reviews
  • "Have visited this restaurant several times, and this was the first time we were very disappointed. The food was served semi warm and the service left lot to be desired. We will return, however, after a lapse of time."

  • "Though nice and the food was very good, we were really put off by the LOUD "conversational noise". It was really difficult to hear the waitress when she recited the specials, as well as, difficult to hear our friends speaking to us. It would be so nice if some noise-absorbing material could be installed to tone down the chatter. I don't think it's appropriate for young kids, though there appeared to be young teens present. I would recommend it for the food, but not for a relaxing dinner meal. Eat and leave promptly is the best recommendation I can make."

  • "The wait staff all seemed to be new at the job. They were pleasant, but seemed to be disorganized."

  • "My wife and I have been here many times, and the food is always great! We've recommended Osaka to everyone we talk to. Keep up the great work! And please keep the crab wonton's with lobster cream sauce! Our personal favorite!"

  • "Great food, reasonably priced. We've been here over and over again, and will continue to come back."

  • "My sashimi entree & all others were delicious, well prepared as well as decoratively presented but we were disappointed. As a result of this restaurant's having a captive audience in Chestnut Hill our waitress's naïveté about the menu (& ? our ??) and that there was NOTHING served with any of the entrees - left us wanting (the most sought after Japanese restaurants in Phila & NYC offer a little salad w/ ginger dressing or small bowl of Miso soup w/ $20+ entrees). In addition, although I'd reserved on Open Table and even made it 15 min. later, we had to wait for the restaurant to set up our table for 5 which turned out to be in a very crowded and noisy corner. The only hot sake took 15 min. to be served barely warm."

  • "We just met our daughter's boyfriend, who had spent time in Japan and speaks the language. He was impressed with Osaka's menu, food, and ambience. We had a memorable dinner! Especially appreciated the spider maki, the Hong Kong dragon maki, the warm saki, and beautiful sashimi."

  • "Looking for good sushi and heard great review, however, was a little disappointed after tasting it. The food was average for the price range. I guess our search continue for our favorite sushi place."

  • "Hard to find really good Japanese in the Philly burbs. This place is one of the more consistent and has a fun bar vibe to it. Delicious spicy seafood soup, good rolls, and a nice varied menu. Prices seem to be creeping up---getting close to the point of being prohibitive. Hope they take note."

  • "I had a very pleasant lunch with a friend who I had not seen in quite some time. We had a quiet booth which was perfect. the food was very good, as we have come to expect, especially, the sushi and sashimi."

  • "We asked to be placed so that we could have a conversation with old friends...which Osaka had prepared for us; the food was delicious, service terrific, and we had a great time together!"

  • "We love Osaka! And will continue to go back. Robin is amazing, we love him, as well as the other sushi chefs. Kani Kamikaze is a must try!!!!"

  • "Two of my oldest friends from college days and I came for dinner and had a really great time. The food was exceptional, the service attentive but not intrusive, and we could sit over dessert and coffee long enough to really make an evening of it. We had the appetizers of the evening, followed by tempura, crab cakes, wine, and hot saki. Then came the mochie dessert and coffee. This place is great to bring your teens and 20-somethings to, just to prove you are not a dolt! Or a special someone, to ply with sushi and cocktails in the romantically lit ambiance. Osaka is so classy. Really!"

  • "Nice no-frills place to grab top quality sushi in the burbs. Great apps and entrees too. Friendly staff. Love the maki rolls and the seafood toban yaki. "

  • "Our waiter was friendly and provided good service. In addition, he was very knowledgeable of the menu. However, it was a bit on the noisy side and the tables were very close to each other making conversations almost "multi-table". Also, keep in mind, it's not cheap! We had a $100.00 gift certificate and had to add an additional $30.00 for two appetizers, two entrees, two drinks, and a dessert. "

  • "We had a reservation for dinner on Easter SUnday confirmed by Open Table and the restaurant was CLOSED. Very sloppy. Someone should have closed the loop with OPen table or at least called us the next day when they realized. Disappointing- we are frequent patrons of this restaurant."

  • "I have been here several times and the food is always excellent. Best sushi I have had outside of Hawaii, and plenty of non-raw options (sushi and otherwise). The waiters are always very friendly and polite. We were celebrating a birthday and had requested in our Opentable reservation that something special be done if possible, and a complimentary dessert with a candle was brought to our table. Very enjoyable experience!"

  • "I normally have had a good experience at this little Chestnut Hill gem and I'm just chalking up my last experience to an inexperienced wait staff. Appetizers were brought with no servicing dishes; I specifically asked for brown rice instead of white rice for my dinner and received white rice; and finally we were hounded by the staff whenever our fork/chopstick was on our plate to see if we were done. Please hire more experienced servers or offer better training for your staff."

  • "I have been coming to Osaka for years. It never disappoints. Great sushi. Excellent appetizers, the best age dashi tofu I have ever had. Interesting and varied menu not just a typical sushi restaurant. Try the crab cake on purple rice for example. My Australian friend says it is her favorite restaurant in the world. We come at least once every time she visits. Great for lunch too! Very competent and friendly wait staff as well."

  • "I dined at Osaka - Chestnut Hill on a Saturday evening with my son. It was his 10th birthday and he had told me that this year he wanted to go somewhere he could have sushi. I thought about going to Chinatown or somewhere more common but then someone told me about this neighborhood gem. I didn't have to travel far plus I didn't have to pay for parking. The weather had been terrible so I didn't expect it to be too busy which was somewhat true. The atmosphere was nice (aroma, lighting and noise level) and very calming. Our waiter was great with suggestions & being attentive, he even brought my son a Shirley Temple after he brought out the sprite he had ordered. We had mussels, maki rolls & terayaki (no room for dessert). I'll go again!"

  • "Wow. We had the Kobe beef appetizer. We also had 5 rolls (kamikaze, lobster, honeymoon, white tiger, and dynamite roll. Best sushi I've ever had and we've had sushi from many different places. Can't wait to go back."

  • "This restaurant had amazing food. The servers were very nice and friendly. Food was received in a timely manner. I loved the salmon and their tempura ice cream"

  • "I reported and told the host that I had a reservation. He did not confirm my name, but did seat me promptly. The food was just okay, not memorable in anyway. It is a convenient moderately priced place for lunch. The noise level was excellent primarily because there were fewer than 10 diners in the entire restaurant."

  • "The food is tasty, the service is good and thr prices are in line with the area. For Japanese food foodies, it's your basic made-in-America version of Japanese food, not a taste-of-Japan joint."

  • "Osaka had a wonderful selection on the menu. The nigiri was wonderful! My fiance ordered a seafood dish with crab and scallops and the broth was so good. Can't wait to go back."

  • "This Chestnut Hill mainstay has become one of our go-to spots for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, and the like. We are frequent patrons in the upper dining room, which is quite insulated from the lively action downstairs in the sushi bar. The last time we were there, our good-natured but tired server was just finishing up a long double shift, and had a few glitches, but the food and the ambience were, as always, top shelf. We spend half of each year in the San Francisco area, where great sushi bars are as plentiful as great little Italian places in South Philadelphia, and we've never been disappointed with the quality or the creativity of the kitchen staff at Osaka."

  • "My husband and I recently enjoyed a dinner at Osaka. This was our first time dining at this restaurant. We will surely go back. Our food was very good. The lobster ravioli appetizer was amazing! My filet mignon was perfectly cooked and had a wonderful flavor. My husband's entree was a mixture of seafood in a butter broth. The broth was delicious and a great compliment to the generous portion of seafood, the king crab was particularly good. Our desserts were also very good. We had the chocolate lava cake and the tempura ice cream, both were yummy. Our server was friendly, courteous and attentive (but not overly so, just right)."

  • "Four hungry diners enjoyed a post-Christmas day dinner. The presentation was beautiful—both the sushi and the gorgeous bowls and platters on which it was served. I wish that my companions had taken a little more time to savor their food. It is easy to watch $100 disappear down gullets in a matter of minutes. But I could not blame them, because the color, taste and balance of flavors were too enticing to resist. Next time I will have noodles after nigiri."

  • "We went to Osaka for a last minute Saturday night meal. Reservations were available with no problem a few hours before but there were few if any available tables while we were there, so make one to be safe. The food was fantastic and there was an energetic feel to the crowd. We can't wait to go back."
