A word from Orsay
Designed by partner Jean Denoyer, Orsay strikes that difficult balance of sophisticated-chic in a warm convivial atmosphere. Dark mahogany raised paneled walls meet Art Nouveau styled arches in a deep, creamy butter color. The floor is a work of art, Italian mosaic tiles in warm tones of precious metals hand laid in a beautiful fan pattern that floats in waves across the expanse of floor. Banquettes with high wood backs topped with frosted glass panels provide privacy if wanted, and the low, soft lighting emanates from Art Nouveau period chandeliers that Denoyer had custom designed. A 20-foot long zinc-topped wood bar shipped in one piece from France, and French doors that spill onto the sidewalk terrace, completing the feeling that you are in the 9th arrondisement in Paris. This sophisticated and elegant Parisian-style brasserie marries modern French cuisine and classic brasserie fare. Orsay's award-winning wine list includes all 300 predominantly French and American varietals.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I happen to live less than 2 blocks away but even if I didn't I would come to Orsay for the French ambience, consistently delicious food and excellent service. Orsay has been around for many years and still manages to be packed every night. I think it is many neighborhood people like me who wander over."

  • "I loved the ambiance and the service was great! Ordered the monkfish which was delicious. Dined here mid-week and although restaurant quickly filled up by 7:30, it wasn't overly noisy. I would come again."

  • "Service was poor - restaurant wasn't very busy and waitress staff were not attentive to their tables . Had to ask for everything at least 3 times. Couldn't find a waitress most of the time.food was good but definitely overshadowed by the poor service."

  • "Service was great, restaurant was quiet and perfect for conversation and the food was delicious. We would definately return. I also had a terrific glass of a French Chardonnay ... Which is my favorite type of wine."

  • "When I decided to treat my friend to dinner for his birthday, I immediately thought of going to Orsay and could not have been more pleased with the experience. As soon as walking in the door we were very cordially greeted. The hostess was very kind, and the maitre d' warmly directed us toward the bar to await the arrival of our third guest. The bartender was personable and attentive. At the table, our service was prompt, friendly, and very helpful. The food was absolutely divine, very French, and exactly what I would have hoped for from a restaurant of this caliber. Despite being the last party in the restaurant, we never once felt rushed. Overall the experience was a wonderful treat. Will definitely return; cannot recommend enough."

  • "the experience peaks when you check in with the hostess. indifferent service and mediocre brunch. I keep hoping that it will get better given the location but the location is the best thing going for Orsay."

  • "We ate there for restaurant week. The appetizer and dessert were much better than the main course. I ordered skate fish.. The portion was defifinately large enough. The basic taste of the skate fish was very good as far as I could tell amid an unnecessary brown sauce in which it was cooked which did nothing to improve the taste and did more to detract from the fish's flavor. The service was fine but they brought someone at my table skate fish when requested steak. The similar sounds "steak" and "skate" we're too much for the waiter. to distinguish in the din of restaurant noise."

  • "I had dinner at Orsay during winter restaurant week as was extremely pleased with my meal. The menu was great and offered every dessert they have. I was truly satisfied. The ambience was lovely and has a true parisian feel to it. Would definitely have dinner there again."

  • "Thanks for keeping hight standards on this beautifull restaurant. I and my familly have been coming for the past ten years and always had a great time. The new bar ambiance is very pleasant and will get us to come more often for little bites."

  • "I had lunch here recently for rest. week. The decor was very elegant and the food was amazing but my service left something to be desired. My waiter seemed less than ethusiastic about have a single patron at his table. My water was not refilled, he cleaned the table next to me and left my empty plate that I had pushed across the table signifying I was finished, and the restaurant manager was left to take my dessert order because my waiter was nowhere to be found. I think for a 40.00 lunch the service could have been better."

  • "As usual, I enjoyed my lunch at Orsay -- Mediterranean fish soup, brook trout and delicious taste tat in for dessert. But there was one big disappointment: the "pot lyonnais", a demi-carafe serving of the house wines, had just been discontinued. The excuse I was given was that the wine list was being changed; in reality, I expect it is more profitable for this fine French restaurant to sell 2 glasses of wine at a higher price! I'll go back, with slightly less enthusiasm."

  • "Went here for a client lunch and was very pleased by the experience. It definitely has your neighborhood french feel and while we were talking business, the table next to us was 6 women catching up for hours. Waitstaff was attentive and polite. Had a leisurely lunch and did not feel at all rushed (because even when there are open tables sometimes people still rush you). Had the french onion soup and the hanger steak pomme frittes as well as sample some desserts. Get the chocolate mousse if you like chocolate because its rich and decadent and you wish they give you another scoop!"

  • "If you're hoping for a quick trip to Paris, try Orsay and you'll feel you are there. Traditional French bistro cuisine with just the right touch of hauteur from the staff. Beautifully renovated art nouveau atmosphere. And, well heeled clientele who can afford the often stiff prices. Particularly nice to sit on the porch when the weather is warm."

  • "it was a so so dinner. my friend ordered a beet salad which had arugula and goat cheese and asked them to hold the beets. they could have mentioned that 95% of that salad is beets and that they would be bringing him a 4 inch plate with 4 arugula leaves and 2 clumps of goat cheese. We thought it was a joke. it was one forkful of food. when we called them over to inquire, instead of saying, let us just bring you some more arugula, they started arguing about how it was his fault for not taking the beets. i asked for my salmon to be well done. they brought it out completely uncooked inside. lastly, i received email from open table as was leaving, saying Orsay notified them that we had cancelled the reservation. definitely so so."

  • "Orsay continued to deliver at a high level. Fantastic greeting and service, wonderful menu and restaurant week specials, and Parisian feel make Orsay a great spot. The monkfish, gambas and saffron rice preparation was nicely split for us after several starters - and it was delicious! I always prefer plating of this type of dish at the table, and Orsay does this well without being obtrusive. The bar is also inviting and the bartenders are friendly and efficient."

  • "Had been several times before, and always enjoyed it.....however, this time had several gluten sensitive diners. Restaurant, or at least its waitstaff, had no suggestions re menu, and seemed to disregard our questions. Will not return."

  • "Went there for lunch and was immediately catered to be all of the service there, not only that but the entire ambiance of the restaurants was beautiful... Gave you a little "taste" of France. We ordered the salmon tartar which was incredible, followed by the brooke trout, both dishes were indescribable! I could literally survive on those dishes if I had too! Some of the best fish dishes I've ever had, hands down! Not only was the fish awesome but the dishes that everyone was ordering around us looked awesome as well! Definitely a keeper!"

  • "Lunch with two old friends. The service was great. We enjoyed a french "chef's" salad, an omelette and fois gras. The waiter didn't push more food on us nor did he ignore us for more water and coffee. It was a perfect weekday special meal."

  • "The decor is Beautiful. The service is excellent, very attentive. The menu offers classic French brasserie dishes and a nice wine selection. The food is well executed and well delivered. It’s the closest thing to Paris in NY that you will find."

  • "Our experience was less than stellar, to say the least. We were shown to a table in the center of the room, even though the restaurant was only half full. When I asked for another table in a less trafficked area, I was told no. I asked for a banquette table, and was grudgingly given it. Our waiter recommended a wine that was not even close to what we were describing. After taking our orders, he DISAPPEARED. We had to resort to asking other staff for more wine, dessert menus, etc.. We finally had to ask someone to find our waiter to bring us our check. We spent more than $400.00. Not one word of apology. We should have had a much better experience."

  • "Orderec the much self touted cheese soufle..aware of 25 min wait listed on menu and reminded of it by waitress. Ordered sav blanc..waitress asked French or CA? Only one listed as Sav on menu..French is sancerre. Said CA. Started with oysters..fine but no lemon slice? Servers around except when youneed one. Then souffle arrives..looks great..waitress and major domo rush over to ooh and how is it..it is hot and I don't know yet. Overcooked..more like cheesy bread and not even that cheesy..one spoonful that was souffle like and now I know why Bourdain hates truffle oil. Charged for Sancerre."

  • "I take any chance I can to make it to Orsays for dinner, but this was my first brunch trip. I have never been disappointed with the quality of the food or service and Sunday brunch was no different. The only thing different was the menu. Not your typical brunch fair, but fantastic. I had the duck confit hash and my wife had some skirt steak on pomme lyonnaise with truffle. I would highly recommend either."

  • "We loved the old world feel of the restaurant. Our entrees, duck and the boeuf bourguignon, were excellent. The chocolate moose dessert is not to be missed! Service was impeccable; we were made to feel that we were one of just a few people at an otherwise full restaurant. Cocktail and wine selections were appealing and affordable. We will definitely return and heartily recommend Orsay to all who want to share a special evening!"

  • "We love this place for a nice weekend dinner or during the week with old friends. The food is consistently good and always beautifully presented. The service is professional and very nice. I am impressed with how nice and friendly the greeting staff is and they take your coat gladly with the same smile that they greet you with. Real professionals. I would recommend this to anyone fond of good French cuisine. Magnifique!"
