A word from Orsay
Designed by partner Jean Denoyer, Orsay strikes that difficult balance of sophisticated-chic in a warm convivial atmosphere. Dark mahogany raised paneled walls meet Art Nouveau styled arches in a deep, creamy butter color. The floor is a work of art, Italian mosaic tiles in warm tones of precious metals hand laid in a beautiful fan pattern that floats in waves across the expanse of floor. Banquettes with high wood backs topped with frosted glass panels provide privacy if wanted, and the low, soft lighting emanates from Art Nouveau period chandeliers that Denoyer had custom designed. A 20-foot long zinc-topped wood bar shipped in one piece from France, and French doors that spill onto the sidewalk terrace, completing the feeling that you are in the 9th arrondisement in Paris. This sophisticated and elegant Parisian-style brasserie marries modern French cuisine and classic brasserie fare. Orsay's award-winning wine list includes all 300 predominantly French and American varietals.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Especially in the warmer months when all of the doors are opened, if you squint--can pretend you are in Paris leisurely dining with friends. The warm welcome at the door along with consistent bistro food and competent service can always be depended upon for brunch, lunch or dinner. Your brunch omelette will be fluffy, your lunch salad nicoise perfectly seasoned and your dinner steak au poivre or a juicy half chicken will all be enhanced with a well priced bottle of wine."

  • "We've eaten here several times and the food has always been excellent. The menu is not too extensive, but certainly varied enough that anyone can find something to their liking. The escargot were fabulous and the giunea hen for two was delicious. We will definitely return."

  • "Met a client and our meal was wonderful and the service was very good. Only the two gentlemen in charge went to their repeat customers and chatted up a storm. We didn't rate I guess."

  • "Had brunch with American and visiting Italo/French branch of family. Nice gathering with just the right choices of food and drink, supplemented with good service. All requests, like seating next to open doors, were met. A joy to return to, time and time again."

  • "A family favorite in the neighborhood, with menu sophisticated enough for the grandparents and a great selection for kids. Perfect for a family dinner with accommodating if somewhat haphazard service. Heats up later in the evening with more action in the bar and couples/dinner parties."

  • "We had a very early reservation in order to be back by 8pm so perhaps the crowd is not indicative of the restaurant at 6 pm. The maitre'd and hostess greeted us as if we were regulars when it had been our 2nd time in 5 years. We got a table outside; waitress was professional. Overheard a mishap at another table where a skirt got snagged on a chair and the manager made amends right away. Husband got a glass of water spilled on him. It happens; no big deal, it's just water and at the end of the meal, manager apologized for not coming over sooner and comp'd a glass of dessert wine. Unnecessary but much appreciated as it says a lot about the service. Food excellent but rich. We'd be back again. Should add mussels to menu."

  • "We had a 5:30 reservation for 9. When we arrived the table wasn't even set up. Service was awful. We basically had to beg to have our water glasses filled and refilled. We will never go back"

  • "Orsay is perfect! Almost like being in Paris! Especially wonderful when the weather is marvelous and you have an outside table. But I love being in the bar, love the main dining room and of course the food is always perfection. I'd like to come to Orsay every day!"

  • "My daughter and I had an wonderful dinner at Orsay tonight. We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather and lively NYC scene. My daughter started with the escargots in a parsley butter sauce. She loved it! For her main course she had the Noix de st. Jacques which was to die for. The scallops were served over creamy risotto with fresh peas and parmesan. I Started with the foie gras which creamy and exactly like the bistros serve in Paris. For my main course I had the Friday night special Le sole Meunière. it was truly great. Perfectly cooked and the sauce and roasted lemon wedges served on the fish were delicious. I often order dover sole. It's was of my favorite dishes. Tonight's version was one of the best I have ever tasted."

  • "After a wonderful lunch outside on a rainy Saturday we came back for a family dinner the next Friday nite. We chose to eat inside near the staircase. Service was frenetic and disorganized. We were rushed thru our courses. They tried to remove the plates of those finished while other diners were still eating. Waitstaff constantly was rushing about bumping into our seats and eachother. Noise level was so high we had to shout to be heard. Overall, a very expensive and disappointing meal "

  • "I've been to Orsay many times, but this was the best experience. Two of us ate outside, which was so pleasant as it was a beautiful night. The tuna tartar was the best I've ever had bar none. Typically the noise level at Orsay is so high that you have to shout but not so outside. It's always a pretty, bustling place that feels like it's "happening." The bistro menu never disappoints."

  • "Orsay is always reliable. The restaurant is particularly enjoyable in warm weather when dining on the terasse is available. When the dining room is full, the noise level makes it almost impossible to hear one's table mates."

  • "Food was outstanding, service attentive and nice ambiance. What could be wrong?"

  • "We ended up going there spur of the minute because I'd always wanted to and our son was in town. They seated us promptly, even moving things around to make more room. The food was delightful - we were on something of a timeline so could have definitely taken a more leisurely approach. My husband loves duck and it isn't easy to find it properly made, even in New York. I love foie gras which is also not easy to find, and thoroughly enjoyed my starter portion (with Sauterne!). The service was nice for a busy evening. The crowd is definitely neighborhood foodie types. "

  • "Chance to eat good food, very nicely served, and mostly to visit with friends not seen for many years. Much to catch up on and a good opportunity to visit quietly with no unwanted interruptions."

  • "Very good food and traditional, non-pretencious menu. Service is good too, so basically this place is all you need for a brasserie experience. It's been like that for many years and will most likely continue to be, so it's my #1 brasserie in NY. Bravo!"

  • "When we arrived for our reservation, we were greeted warmly, given the table of our choosing and never once felt like we needed to vacate our table quickly after dinner to make room for others waiting at the door. Max, our server, was awesome! The escargot was delicious altho' my husband and I could have shared the appetizer order (12 escargot). My short ribs were melt in your mouth tender. Our friends had the Thursday special, Coq Au Vin, thoroughly enjoyed it, and the Steak Au Poivre got raves as well. Altogether, a super meal in one of our favorite restaurants with true French bistro ambience which made our Francophile friends very, very happy. Thank you again, Orsay, for being consistent and living up to our recommendation. "

  • "Nice menu / wine list. On a crazy busy bucketing down rainy Friday night, we were seated promptly and the service was always attentive. The food was delicious and nicely presented. We were never rushed and everything was done professionally. Would definitely return whenever we're in the neighborhood. Locals are lucky to have a restaurant of this caliber."

  • "We go there frequently as it is close by and we like the food. Unfortunately, the service is consistently poor: items forgotten, drink orders delayed, dirty plates not cleared. This latter fact is extremely irritating and I wish they could send the whole staff to a training center. "

  • "This busy, loud and active restaurant was able to pull off a lovely family dinner with good food and service. We were well fed and not rushed. Some of the dishes were unique and quite tasty. Loved the hot salad with melted cheese and the lobster ravioli. Great beef short ribs of the bone and an outstanding house pate. It was all good, tasty and pleasant. The wait staff was pleasant, helpful and friendly despite having a nonstop busy day."

  • "It was Mother's Day. So to be fair, it might not be a day to judge. We reconfirmed our reservation several days in advance. Arrived and were told to go to the bar to wait. No seats and a mad house. Once we got seated and got to relax, things got better. The food was OK. The service frenetic. It's been several years since we had dined at Orsay. It will probably be several more before we go back. Never on a holiday!"

  • "On one of the busiest brunch days of the year, the staff wonderfully accommodated our party of 9 including 2 great grandmothers and one infant in a carriage comfortably and graciously. The food was excellent and served in a timely manner despite the restaurant being full. Everyone was kind and efficient"

  • "You step off Lexington Ave and you immediately feel as if your in Paris. The food here is consistently delicious and always served so nicely! You can't go wrong with the traditional onion soup or steak frites but I always seem to order the simply grilled salmon which is always perfectly cooked. The nightly specials are lovely, my husband always enjoys the duck l'orange on Saturdays. The noise level can get high when they are busy so keep that in mind if that bothers you. Overall, Orsay is a very enjoyable dining experience."

  • "The food was delicious, interesting, classic French. Bread was good, water and bread were kept well supplied. Glitches: the bread and water were served by reaching across in front of us instead of going around to the side. Plates were cleared the same way. Rather peculiar. Otherwise service was good until dessert menus, when we were forgotten. Dessert came in reasonable time once it was ordered, but then we were forgotten again, 20 minutes after we finished dessert I asked again for coffee. Is there some secret signal I don't know about to let the waiter know we're ready to order dessert, or have our coffee?"

  • "Met a very old friend for lunch and it was delightful. In fact, since it was lunch, they let us sit for 2 1/2 hours! Our salad Niçoise salads were authentic and delicious. A warm asparagus salad was slightly over cooked but the dressing was tart and yummy. The staff was fabulous -- someone came over often to check on us. There were a few wheelchairs and strollers, so they are accommodating. Seems like lunch is businessmen and ladies who lunch."

  • "We had a wonderful Easter Brunch at Orsay with a party of seven family members. The food was delicious, and everyone was very attentive and nice. I thought the menu was wonderfully broad and varied. They didn't rush us; service was great. We loved it and would definitely go back! "

  • "Orsay never fails to be special on all points. Almost like being in France with a menu, wine list and service that invites you to come back again and again. Love the bar! Love the authentic decor. Hope nothing ever changes at Orsay! Perfection!"

  • "I happen to live less than 2 blocks away but even if I didn't I would come to Orsay for the French ambience, consistently delicious food and excellent service. Orsay has been around for many years and still manages to be packed every night. I think it is many neighborhood people like me who wander over."

  • "I loved the ambiance and the service was great! Ordered the monkfish which was delicious. Dined here mid-week and although restaurant quickly filled up by 7:30, it wasn't overly noisy. I would come again."
