A word from Original Joe's - San Francisco
Original Joe’s is the quintessential, classic San Francisco dining experience. A fabric of the City for 75 years, it is located in the heart of the historic and majestic North Beach, a mecca for natives, tourists, and culinary aficionados alike.

Original Joe’s is the oldest of all existing Joe’s restaurants in the country and is the innovator of what is now nationally known as the “Joe’s Concept”. With its signature red leather booths, legendary smooth cocktails, and renowned Italian American menu, Joe’s has come to signify its own Northern Californian category of food and symbolizes classic Italian American comfort food at its finest.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "First time back since the original/original burnt down. Great location (parking is rough anywhere in the city). Lunch was terrific-halibut was fresh and not over cooked. Waiter would disappear for long periods of time but it really had no impact on the experience. Need to try dinner and hang out in the bar to really get a good feel for the "new" Original Joe's."

  • "If you are lucky enough to get Kenney as your wait staff person, your dining experience will be more amazing. My guests from Texas put him to the test time after time and he ensured that we all had a delicious & memorable dinner. We are still talking about it. Thank you for living up to SF's reputation for a fun dinner in the city."

  • "Great place to eat for any special occasion or no occasion at all. The service is excellent, the food is excellent and you get plenty of it. I always get the cheese burger as it is the best in town, my friend order the Tuesday special, short ribs with mash potatoes and broccoli, it looked so good that I will come back on a Tuesday and order it myself. I love to go to Original Joes the only con about it is that I always eat more than I should and after all you want to do is rest/sleep! When in SF go to Original Joes."

  • "Here's a bit of nostalgia! Where else for Joe's Special with mushrooms? The Burger is a a two meal option as it will feed at least two or more. The Daily Specials are great. Don't miss this stop on your North Beach dining"

  • "The food was good- but the music was loud & the service was poor. We were not in a hurry, so the slow service was more acceptable. The music was so loud that I believe it contributed to them serving my wife a shrimp salad when she ordered the meatball sandwich :-) I guess after waiting so long and then the order being wrong it just kind of felt a bit displeased."

  • "Was great. Now, too full of itself and touristy. Food less than average at above average prices. Its heyday is over. Avoid."

  • "Overall, I gave a 4 star rating to the food because most of the dishes and drinks were excellent, but a couple of things fell short. Of the items ordered in our group, the Sand Dabs, which was the special of the day, were excellent and the hamburger was flavorful and juicy. However, the Caesar Salad with chicken was a disappointment. The dressing had hardly any flavor at all and the chicken which should have had a grilled flavor, didn't. Also, one of the cocktails wasn't made properly. I don't know if the french bread was old or not, but it was tough to bite into and chew. The service was excellent. Our waitress was friendly, helpful and orders came to the table in a timely manner."

  • "If you want lasagna at Joes "you should call ahead" is what I was told by a manager there. The last two times they have not had lasagna although it is one of there specialties....Very disappointing"

  • "The move from Taylor St in the Tenderloin was the best idea ever. Now I live only 3 blocks away. Everything here is great."

  • "Our dinner was excellent. I love organ meats and it was hard to choose between the sweetbreads and liver. Chose the sweetbreads (first time in Italian cuisine) and enjoyed it immensely. My wife's lasagna was the lightest lasagna she ever had; wish I knew how they did it."

  • "Noise worse than expected. Food, good but less than expected. Service better than expected. Will give it another try on a weekday. On the high $$$ side."

  • "This was my first time at the new Joe 's and was not disappointed. It was like I remembered, the food, the service only in an upscale setting in the heart of Little Italy Gotta go to Joes. You' ll wonder why you haven't before. We had 8 in our party and heard nothing it ooohs and aaahs the while night ."

  • "It's been several years since I've been to the Original Joe's near the Theater district. I was delighted to see they moved to North Beach. Love the red booths, dark wood, dim lighting -- even though I was with a friend (same sex) and it was early evening. It's close to all the bus routes, too, so no need to drive."

  • "The noise level is exceptionally high, so much so you can't hear people at your table. The food is great! I will return and ask for a quieter section."

  • "The group was there for lunch. We ordered OX tails, couple cheese burgers and a salad. The food and service was great as usual. If you haven't been to o Joe's, you must go. The boos man John and staff are the very best."

  • "Was visiting San Francisco with family. Saw this place on the corner and made a reservation. Food was great and the pairings with the steaks were unusual but outstanding."

  • "Great Italian food, but Mondays are slower with less wait staff. The restaurant had a different feel to it this time than when we have visited before on a busier night later in the week. Sadly a very popular Italian dessert was missing this time -- Tiramisu."

  • "Original Joe's continues to have great food. It is a great place to take visitor's to the city. A SF special spot. Never disappointed. Located in a great SF location in North Beach."

  • "A part of old San Francisco's culinary history is well preserved at this North Beach restaurant. Great place to meet up with old friends. This is the place to enjoy 'joe's special' and a stiff drink."

  • "My wife and I came in for a late dinner. We're outta towners from Chicago. The 2 items we wanted to order, the lasagna and prime rib, they were both out of. We then ordered the egg plant Parmesan & a chicken dish with linguine (my wife wanted the dish with fettuccini but they were out of that too). Food was decent at best. Lots of mom & pop pizza spots in Chicago could beat the quality. Service was good though but we all go to a resteraunt to eat don't we. C+ tops for me."

  • "I've been coming here for over 30 years. Whenever, I travel to San Francisco, I try to make it here. It's a fun ride on the cable car from my hotel in Union Square. The food is just wonderful and I love the service and atmosphere. I asked to change table and the waitresses were so accommodating about it. The prices are reasonable for San Francisco as well. Can't wait to visit again!"

  • "From finding valet parking at our arrival, to taking us to our table immediately, to prompt service, delicious cocktails and unbelievably good calves liver with bacon and onions, and all for a reasonable price, we were thrilled with our experience at Original Joe's. We heard Original Joe's will be taking over the currently shuttered Joe's of Westlake. If this is true, we cannot wait for the re-opening out in Westlake!"

  • "Original Joe's has reincarnated from a great old SF tradition in a seedy location to a head-turning new SF tradition in the heart of North Beach!"

  • "Great food, reasonable prices and good quality wait staff. Two weeks ago, same day of week and same time of day, on ordering the same food from the same menu, my wife was charged extra for her salad, this time it was included. I was told my salad was not included when the menu specifically said it was included. Inconsistencies like these are not appreciated."

  • "Great evening. We celebrated a friend's 75th Birthday and enjoyed the evening immensely. Great traditional Italian food with a modern twist. Very generous portions which provided a take-home and a second time to enjoy our delicious Sole Piccata. Friendly, energetic atmosphere with patrons of diverse ages. Loved it!"

  • "I would say that Original Joe' s, as well as providing great food and having an officiant and pleasant staff, is a fun restaraunt to visit, It is has old school charm. But it can be a tad pricey."

  • "This restaurant was recommended by my hotel's concierge desk. I also checked online for reviews and it had great reviews. However, I was not impressed. I had the lamb, ravioli and side of veggies. The lamb was a bit chewy and ravioli was bland. The others in my party seemed to have enjoyed their food which included the pork chop, spaghetti and meat balls and veal. Service was great! The atmoshpere was pretty nice and a moderate noise level."

  • "This place was awesome. In the middle of little Italy, this is the italian place you found back in New York or New Jersey way back when. Great food and great service. Just go!"

  • " I like Original Joes because the atmosphere is comfortable, clean, old school, and the food is very good. I had the NY steak, it was a little tough, but the flavor was good. The raviolis were yummy. The house wine went perfectly with my steak. My husband had the liver and onions; it was the best he ever tasted. I didn't like our seats. For the second time in a row my family was seated next to the waiter's computers. I kept looking at the serious waiters as they entered their orders. They didn't make a very attractive background for our pictures, either. Our waiter was nice and professional. I would go back again, but I won't allow them to sit us next to the kitchen again (we had reservations too)."

  • "Original Joe's serves nostalgic food in a glamorous setting at reasonable prices. If meatball sandwiches, Caesar salads, hamburgers, meatballs and spaghetti, or chicken parmesan are your thing then this is your place. This is where I take out of town guests who want to have a genuine San Francisco experience."

  • "We went to Original Joe's when in San Francisco because my wife found it mentioned in a detective novel set in San Francisco. It's a real classic old-time Italian restaurant.....waiters in black coats and bow ties, solid traditional Northern Italian menu. Glad we went."
