Welcome to Origin, Chef Claudio Aprile's highly anticipated new restaurant. Origin is located in the historic King East neighbourhood. Origin was born out of Chef Aprile's desire to create a spontaneous, high energy restaurant that serves ingredients at the height of their season.

  • "My friend & I met at 6:30 pm and stayed until 10:30 pm without any hassle - we chatted long after the bill was paid and they kept refilling our wine glasses. Food was great. Surprised there were only 2 scallops for $22 but otherwise good value. Interesting food pairings. Fun to share. Helpful service."

  • "Had a nice quick lunch here mid-week. They have some interesting tapas options if you are looking to try a few different things, although portion sizes can be a little generous for lunch. Had the fish tacos, they were solid. Good service, food appeared quickly (early lunch though so it wasnt busy yet) and appears to be a nice little patio to boot. Would def recommend for lunch, suitable for casual or business."

  • "our server promptly took our drink order and brought us our bottle of wine...and then we didn't see him for nearly an hour. Other tables got up and left. when our food finally did come, was good (not worth an hour and half wait). the patio was busy so i may try again on a quieter night. maybe."

  • "As a major fan of Colborne Lane and the work of Claudio Aprile, I'm glad he continues some of his molecular gastronomy flair in this more casual restaurant setting. The food is excellent, including Mexican offerings and a delicious burger. Their meringue dessert is my current favorite dessert in the city. Decor and location are great. Unfortunately, service is very slow. For a restaurant that calls patrons to remind them of their seating time limit of 90 minutes, they should probably work harder on their end to provide timely service instead of putting the onus on the customer."

  • "Origin is wonderful, there is an energy about the place that belies the ancient laundry building & dark interior. We have been a few times but this visit was the first time that we have felt rushed. We had several wait staff that didn't make eye contact, plates of food were served hurriedly and with only a garbled description and this was a shame... for us the whole point of tasting is not to rush, is to enjoy finding out what is on the plate. We had to ask for a copy of the menu to re-read the descriptions! The food was fabulous. Mostly we have been fortunate to have a table on the lounge side, we were happy to try the kitchen side and it was fun watching the kitchen. We'll be back!"

  • "Service was terribly slow although our server was very nice. Friendly staff but they really need to pick up the pace. Ceviche and tuna salad were good. Oysters and mozzarella bar item were not. Fantastic patio for summer drinks. Probably wouldn't eat here again- would definitely recommend the patio."

I took my parents to Origin while they were visiting Toronto and we were able to find delicious food on the menu for all of us (we have varying levels of comfort in adventuring with food). Must-have dishes include the Bufala mozzarella with pear and the beef tenderloin. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "I was there for brunch with 2 couples and a friend. We asked the waitress to split the bill by couple and she said it was impossible to do. I find that hard to believe in 2014. She said the computer is incapable for separating the bill. I think this is absurd. It really killed our dining experience as one person had to pay and we all had to calculate each couple's totals and pay the friend back money. For a fine dining restaurant I think they should have this ability as I am sure many customers would also ask the same. My friends were visiting from out of town and were appalled by this as they've never experienced this in all their travels throughout the world. I thought this was a "world class" restaurant. "

  • "I have been to this Origin location twice and received great service. On Saturday I brought out someone visiting from Australia, it was out last night in Toronto together and I was embarrassed with the service. When we asked to move inside from the patio because it was chilly they never checked on us again. We didn't get to order wine with our dinner and no one checked on us when we got out food. I'm shocked at the service we received. Origin is no longer my favourite restaurant and I will not recommend it to a friend. "

  • "Service was okay but wouldn't say it was an excellent service. My friend ordered the eggs benedict but i had to send it back since the poached egg was overcooked. My steak and eggs -- fries was a bit overcooked too - saving grace is at least i like crunchy fries. Overall, i wasn't that impressed with the food and service. Based on the reviews i read, i was expecting something better than what i experienced. Its ok but i had better food and service elsewhere. Would I recommend it? They can always try and see it for themselves. They might have a better experience than me. "

  • "This is our second time coming to Origin and I have to say, the experience this time around was not as good as last. We waited for a long time before someone came by to serve us. The appetizers took awhile to comes as well even though the restaurant at the point (Friday, around 6pm) was not that busy. The main dishes we had were quite salty - lobster and mussel spaghetti and the cornish hen. The appetizers were fine - devilled eggs, scallop ceviche and the tuna hand roll -- again, more on the salty side. "

  • "Stood at the front door for 15 mins without any help. Finally, a server went to call the host. Only stayed ebcause we had a reso. I would have not waited if a reso was not made. Overall, the food and wine were delicious as usual. And it is a great menu for sharing"

  • "Great food, but he service was horrible! We waited 10-15min for someone to offer us a drink and the restaurant was not busy. The owner was presnt and did not even walk the restaurant, he was aloof and clearly disinterested in his patrons. It's unfortunate that the service was so terrible, we were lookign forward to eating at Origin. It may have been understandable if the restaurant wes busy, but it was 5:30pm and most of the tables were empty."

  • "The food was very tasty, but overpriced for the size and quality. Should've gone vegan, as that dish looked very appetizing. An almost empty room, but they wouldn't seat us away from the front door in a four-top, it was cool weather so it mattered enough to ask. Not sure why they wouldn't just slide a four into a two, if you know what I mean. Standard high prices for small plates that weren't really anything special. "

  • "Origin offers a wide selection of dishes from Asian to Spanish. The tapas style servings work best for a party of two. The quality of the dishes was consistently very good. Despite having a reservation a server attempted to seat us at the bar, but accommodated our request for a table, only after warning us it would be needed in two hours, which is always aggravating. We were done well before that time, but the restaurant was certainly not full. Although I have dined at Origin on many previous occasions, I happened to have been given a gift card which I was using. Our waiter 'reminded' me that our credit card charge would not be for the full amount and the tip option would not reflect the full cost of the meal. Also a little aggravating."

  • "When Origin first opened, we were excited and amazed by the adventurous spirit and culinary skills of the chef & his staff. Every plate a masterpiece and every moment carefully attended to by the wait staff.. Fast forward a years and the restaurant, although good, is a far cry from what it use to be. One can't help but notice that most dish seems either soaked in sauce or rushed. Staff too seem either be too busy to clear plates or inept in the fundamentals of food service etiquette. "

  • "My wife and I went for a Friday night dinner with reservations for 7:30 pm. Upon checking in, we were offered either bar seats facing the kitchen or a regular table... we picked the regular table which was by the window facing King East with views of the Cathedral Church of St. James. Everything with the evening was great! Our server James was very attentive and the service in general was excellent as various servers help out through the evening. We tried five different dishes, all were fantastic. We had cocktails and a bottle of Spanish red wine and all were excellent! We left around 9:30 pm... looking forward to returning sometime soon! Highly recommended!"

  • "As always the food was fantastic. Unfortunately as always the service was poor. In her defense, she looked extremely weeded. In our defense as a customer, we suffered. This is the third time at the King Street location this has been the case. The food is so good we may give it one more chance. The manager handled the situation with class and a kind disposition. "

  • "We went to celebrate my Husband's birthday and their were 3 of us so we got to share several dishes that everyone absolutely loved. We even had our friend experience raw tuna and steak tartar for the first time and she loved them both. Every dish we tasted was an art form of design and the flavours just popped on our tongues."

  • "I have gone to this restaurant many times. The experience has always been satisfactory and I have always enjoyed the food. However this time I had the worst possible experience that will keep me from ever going back. My server was JAMES. I was there with a group of friends and he was missing throughout the whole meal the general manager had to pick up his slack. At the end of the night when we asked for separate bills he brought one bill and said "you can divide it" after asking him to split it up he came back with separate bills that were done incorrectly. When he returned he threw the bill on the table so aggressively. I was taken aback and displeased by the service I will not return. I complained to the GM however she needed work too. "

  • "We had a wonderful dinner at Origin. We were seated at the "dining bar" which we normally wouldn't choose but actually it was comfortable and surprisingly romantic. Starting with cocktails (try the "First Flight") and the great decor, we enjoyed everything about this place. The service (our server was also the manager) was outstanding, attentive, and knowledgeable, both about the food and the wine list. We enjoyed all the dishes, but the highlights were the steak tartare and the duck tacos. We ended the evening with a delicious vermouth on the house, which was a great surprise. Definitely we'll go back."

  • "Went for brunch on the weekend here and was hyped with the amazing menu! I was surprised by how much out server didn't give us the best impression that he cared at all about us or any table in that matter. I was truly disappointed with the service of this restaurant and would love to see some aggressive changes in order for me to come back..too bad to see as the owner is such an amazing Toronto chef."
