Welcome to Origin, Chef Claudio Aprile's highly anticipated new restaurant. Origin is located in the historic King East neighbourhood. Origin was born out of Chef Aprile's desire to create a spontaneous, high energy restaurant that serves ingredients at the height of their season.

  • "We ate calamari with pineapple and peanuts, chickpeas with kale. The food seemed to be prepared with exquisite care; within each dish there were a multitude of flavours resounding on the palate. The desserts were not very good. "

  • "Exemplary service saved the night for our enjoyment of Origin Restaurant. We enjoyed drinks and shared an amazing appetizer of crostini, pear and mozzarella. We both ordered the famous burgers which were great. Mine however, was very rare in the centre and i just ate around the edges where it was less rare. Our server noticed I hadn't eaten the middle and after examining it he said it was indeed too rare and offered to replace it. By then I had eaten enough anyway, so I declined the offer. Instead he brought out a complimentary dessert consisting of delicious caramelized banana, hazelnut biscotti, and ice cream. Very classy touch. He also took the burger off the bill which we would have ever expected. We will return and recommend also."

  • "My friends and I went to Origin this past weekend for brunch. Almost immediately after eating their Tostada with the fried egg, salsa, and tostada I fell very ill. After two days of stomach churning agony I feel I'm finally a little better, though it will be a long time before I try and eat another egg."

  • "Came here for dinner just before 6. The hostess came off extremely rude. I walked in with my boyfriend and the hostess didn't greet us . We just stood there awkwardly until my boyfriend said hello. She answered by saying "what?" She quickly corrected herself and asked if we had a reservation. She made it seem like for the entire time we were communicating we were wasting her time. Luckily we did have a reservation and she said okay, you guys can sit here. No "enjoy your meal" or "your waiter will be with you shortly". Food was good, came fast. However there was no quality check. For a place that's a little more upscale than most you'd expect something as simple as a quality check wouldn't have been overseen. Won't be coming back."

  • "We ordered 8 different plates and each plate did not disappoint. The experience was amazing even thought they were very busy and completely booked. I did not see any free tables the 2 and half hours were there. My friends and I kept talking about the food even after . I will definitely come back with my husband as I would love for him to try their amazing tapas."

  • "First time at Origins on King street. Was there with a group of 3 and we shared a number of dishes. All were very well presented and prepared. Loved the different flavours and tried a few items that I would not necessarily have tried. Service was friendly and our server was well informed with our questions on menu items. The only negative I have - I thought I was going to a nice restaurant with a couple of friends. The music was way too loud and the choice was not to my liking. I was not looking to have dinner in a nightclub atmosphere. This would be the only reason for me not returning to your restaurant. The music is loud so you end up talking louder to make sure you can be heard. Once again, That is the only negative."

  • "First, the food was amazing. I could have closed my eyes and pointed to the Brunch Menu and I would have been more than satisfied. I love that you can make a reservation for Sunday brunch, so rare in this city. The prices were appropriate and the food was exactly what I would have expected and so much more. Really recommend Origin."

  • "People who miss Colborne Lane will find a little solace here at Origin. The food and ambiance are excellent, and at a more reasonable price. Although the chef's table was fun for watching food prep, the service was very slow. On the reminder call the day before, was also told that reservations were held for 15 minutes only and the time the next guests were booked to sit at our table. All in all, food to die for in a great location, marred by poor service."

  • "I had eaten at this restaurant a few months ago and found the place to be busy and fun, food awesome and service quite attentive. Not so this week. Booked reservation online for 11 pm. Arrived early, restaurant clearly wrapping it up for the night. Staff disinterested and unwelcoming. Considered leaving but didn't. Food/drinks were excellent as remembered however service was terrible. Dishes dropped in front of us without a word, plates cleared while still eating. Although restaurant almost completely empty, another patron enjoyed a loud, prolonged fight with girlfriend on his phone right beside our table. We suggested he move on. He didn't. Staff did nothing. Overall, very disappointing experience. We won't return."

  • "Huevos Rancheros and Duck Confit French Toast are amazing. Frittata and Banana French Toast are decent but not memorable. Haven't worked our way through the rest of Origin's brunch menu yet. Service on our first visit was quite bad, much better 2nd time around. Either way, still ballsy to set your terminals to a 20% default tip."

  • "We dine out a lot. So if you want something different that is pleasantly surprising, this is it. There are enough items on the menu for those not looking for to be excited too. And everything is very well presented and prepared to perfection. Just check the seating arrangements 1st, some bench table spots aren't ideal."

  • "Beets are one of those dishes I never make and always order. Origin had the best beets and beat presentation - goat cheese and pistachio. Yumm. Can't go wrong here although I imagine it could be loud when full. We dined early non a weekday. Great servers and service!"

  • "I went to Origin with a few friends for a casual Friday night dinner. We tried the steak tartare with rice chips, butternut squash risotto, and the spicy Spanish fries. The food was quite unique, with innovative combinations of ingredients. The restaurant (King St location) has a great bar and is very lively. Overall, a good experience!"

  • "My wife and I had our first experience at Origin on Valentines Day 2014. We had such an amazing time- the food was fantastic, service was exceptional. My wife's favourite dish was the Bufala mozzarella + confit tomato + basil + preserved lemon. Our entire meal was amazing, the detail and presentation was very unique. We had such a great time we were looking forward to the next time we cold go. This past week, my daughter came to Toronto for a job interview, so we decided to take her out to Origin for dinner. We tried different dishes and once again we were totally impressed. We love this spot and now want to try Origin North, as it is a bit closer for us. I would highly recommend this restaurant"

  • "I made an online reservation for a 2pm brunch on Sunday March 2nd. I certainly expect NOT to be ignored by sullen pinch-faced wait- staff who acted as though it was a bother to serve me and my guests. When asked for our drink orders, I ordered apple juice which was unavailable then tried tomato juice, also unavailable. Rather than the waiter assisting me by listing the beverages the restaurant did have, he stood there irritated that I ended up w/ water. His displeasure was apparent especially when I had to flag him down 3 times from his dusting glassware duties in order to get a refill. This was the start of our experience, it didn't get better."

  • "In the past I have sometimes felt rushed to leave if you go for the early sitting if busy. For those that want a Pino Grigio by the glass Origins isn't for you. Last time we will order the shrimp phallo and the tortilla appeared and tasted burnt and the Squash Gnocci was cold. Otherwise it is proably the best restaurant for palate taste sensation."

Hospitality was outstanding, one of the best I've experienced. there was a little mix up with one order but it was taken care of right away. all our requests were accommodated to. Staff, including kitchen team treated us like restaurant VIPs it was a great experience and we will definitely be back !"

  • "We had brunch there on the weekend. The food was amazing and the coffee was even better. There are some communication issues though between the restaurant staff (for example, you order mineral water from your server and another waiter comes and pour you tap water, you order cappuccino and another waiter refill you regular coffee, etc.) but that didn't stop us from having a good time."

  • "Origins consistently provides foods and food combinations that excite my palate with new and different tastes and textures (rare these days). Service feels personal but is not intrusive. We have had difficulty obtaining one of the wines on their wine list and the manager went out of her way to write down the supplier for us. A bit pricy for every day but will definitely be back. Duck tacos are my personal favorite."

  • "My friend had eaten here on the patio in summer, but it also worked well for a romantic winter dinner for two this week while in Toronto for a conference. A Toronto friend had raved about it to me after she went with 3 girlfriends recently, so we tried it out. Perfect evening, but for the somewhat obnoxious guest to my left, but our proximity allowed for a glimpse at the gorgeous looking burger and fry combo he split with his dinner partner. We had shared plates - 5 dishes plus one dessert for the two of us- my friend is a very hearty eater, and a bottle of the featured red. It was all outstanding! Our server was helpful and knowledgable, the wine a sumptuous continuum for the parade of flavours we experienced that evening."

  • "My hubby and I hadn't been out for a good quality brunch in awhile. We had done a quick internet search to discover some leading restaurant contenders. We had also heard about Origin through watching an episode of Master Chef Canada. Discovering Origin also served a high quality brunch through our online searches, we felt we would give it a try. I ended up ordering the pumpkin spice/hot apple cinnamon french toast and it was absolutely delightful. It was served fresh and hot with a side of homemade whipped cream. Visually is was not what I expected. Being used to seeing french toast slabbed on a plate, I was quite intrigued to see it presented as a "layered cake" style. I was excited to dig in. It was not too sweet but just right."

  • "I had an absolutely delicious brunch at Origin with a gigantic portion. The Pork Fried Rice/Fried Egg combination were perfect and went extremely well with their lengthy morning drink menu. Very nice service with excellent communication. The drink prices are a little steep, however they are worth it in terms of what is in them."

We were greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne, the bar staff and servers were knowledgeable about the food and paced the dishes appropriately. Not a romantic ambience, well suited for groups or casual dining. I would highly recommend it."

  • "We've been to Origin a few times, but it's been a while. The food this time might be the best we ever had at Origin. it was interesting and delicious. Particularly impressed with the steak tartare and the beef sizzling plate. Would like the pass on the scallop ceviche next time - it was quite tasty, but the scallop was lost in the sauce (too much sauce for our taste)."

  • "We sat at the tables in front of the kitchen and were pleasantly surprised at what a terrific experience it was. If you are a foodie and are interested to see how it all happens, then these seats are great for you. The staff was very attentive, including the chefs preparing the food. They all took the time to answer questions about the ingredients and preparation, you could tell they were genuinely into their work. Of course everything we tasted was tremendous, just can't say enough good things about this dining experience."
