Orient Express Opens in the West Village!

The Orient Express may have inspired iconic novels and films like Dracula and From Russia with Love, served as the setting for bravado characters like James Bond, and been featured as the backdrop of Agatha Christie's most famous works, but the famed vintage train continues to ride through modern culture with its latest stop in NYC's West Village, where Turks and Frogs owner Osman Cakir has re-conceptualized its famous voyages into a posh, time-reversing cocktail bar with a flair for the spirits of yesteryear.

Its look reflects the nostalgia of train travel: Amid the sexy amber glow, warm vintage-tinted beech wood panels, faux windows and bronzed luggage racks, the bar—a handcrafted Caesar Stone beauty—is the clear focal point. Above it, the ceiling curves to each side, and behind, bartenders bedecked in old-school vests and neckties shake and pour cocktails designed by Sam Ziar.

  • "This was a cute restaurant two years ago. Set up like the Orient Express train from movie days it shares a kitchen with the restaurant next door. At this point it offers only a small (stained) menu of very common appetizers and very small drinks served in old-fashioned cocktail glasses. The charcuterie plate offered 2 pates, 3 meats and pita bread slices. No pickles or other garnish AND none available to bring from the kitchen. They were out of Bombay Sapphire Gin, didn't carry Rose's Lime or cranberry juice...so lower quality gin for martini, and no gimlets or cosmos could be made. Music was rock and roll instead of period sounds you would expect. No wonder it was empty on Saturday night at 7:00."

  • "We love Turks and Frogs and thought we'd try Orient Express as the two spots have the same owner. Unfortunately the service experience is worlds apart. We went to Orient Express last weekend for drinks and appetizers and were one of three occupied tables during our time there. The wine was fair and the appetizers were good but the service was the poorest we've experienced since moving to NYC. The wait staff congregated by the bar socializing and getting their attention was beyond difficult. When we finally did get someone's attention it was clear that we were frustrated. The waitresses response was to exude venomous attitude for the remainder of the dinner which made the experience unpleasant to say the least. Off the list...."

  • "The service was horrendous. I had an opentable reservation, and when I arrived and told the bartender, he just pointed to the back so I took a seat. We had to wait at least 15-20 minutes before I grabbed someone who was walking by to let them know we didn't have a waiter or menus. This level of being ignored lasted until a new waiter came on for his shift. Definitely not going back, unless I am sitting at the bar. When I pay over $100 for a few cocktails and a plate of hummus, I expect a little more service."

  • "We got there early, when there were only a few other people. The ambiance was great. We could appreciate all the detail that went into the place and have a nice conversation. Further into the night, it got very loud and packed; there were people standing right next to our table waiting to get a seat. Overall a good experience, but I would suggest going early if you don't want the typical bar scene."
