Diner Reviews
  • "Ophelia's is consistently good. We bring out of town guests, have nice romantic evenings, and experience a fine dining experience close to home. This was no different. Food was delicious, drinks were well crafted, but service was slow. Our guest had nothing but great things to say about the restaurant, so impress the guest mission accomplished, but it did take a longer time to dine due to slow service in between appetizer and dinner entrees. We enjoyed the chicken & chorizo dip, the chicken special, & the chateaubriand. Again, the food is good and well worth the price & overall experience, but the only issue was slow service. Friendly service, but slow."

  • "Our server was pleasant and knowledgable, but it took quite a long time for our food to arrive and my group of four were the only ones dining at the time. Refills of drinks was poor. The food was good when it finally did arrive, but because this was weekday lunch we were all later than we wished to be in returning to our work. Perhaps, they only cater to diners for whom time is no object."

  • "We celebrated our wedding anniversary with dinner at Ophelia's. The food was superb. Service was timely, friendly, and professional. Live piano music set the stage for a wonderful and romantic meal. Don't wait for an anniversary, go any time!"

  • "This is a wonderful restaurant with something for everyone, from beef to fish to healthy, calorie correct fare. Everything our party of four ordered was cooked to perfection and really tasty. The service was excellent and prices are reasonable for the quality. A great evening!"

  • "Came with friends after long absence who told us of a new chef. All four meals were lovely. Wish the piano music was live but perhaps it will be next time. Salmon and sea bass perfectly prepared, and service (Molly) delightful. Nice chard, too......"

  • "Waitress was wonderful. The pepper steak was overly peppered and burnt. Was not impressed with this plate."

  • "We dine here often because the food is fabulous and the ambience is beautiful. What a surprise we received Friday night when Rebecca Grace Taylor began to sing! We would come to Ophelia' s just to hear her. Her piano player is good, too."

  • "Had a very pleasant meal with my girlfriend on valentine's day. The service was very good albeit a bit busy at times. The food was delicious. I would recommend this place on a special occasion."

  • "We went there on Valentines Day. Service was great, and the food was wonderful!"

  • "Was very disappointed when we first arrived. Made our reservation a month ahead of time for Valentines day, got there on time and were sat at the tiniest little table with no elbow room at all that our food and drinks barely fit on. They were busy just as everywhere is on Valentines but we walked past not only a booth but two other tables that they could have sat us at. Our waiter was top notch though. He was very polite and quick with everything. The food was good but I think that it could have been better. Both my husband and my had ordered steaks and they were both a little over cooked. Our appetizer was very good. I would however go here again to give it another chance."

  • "Our meal at Ophelia's Friday night was without a doubt the best dining experience we've had in the past year in Kansas City. Our waiter Molly was outstanding and very knowledgeable about the entire menu and specials. Every dish was exceptional, from the Portobello won ton appetizer through an outstanding soup to an well prepared duck confit. The brioche bread pudding was equally outstanding. We'll definitely be going back again soon."

  • "We dined here on a Sat night. It's fairly close to us & we like the ambiance (live piano player). Our salads were fine-i like the Ophelia's salad dressing. Seafood special wasn't described correctly by our server. It was "corrected" to what my companion thought he was ordering but that didn't dispel the awkwardness. My pork chop entree was fine. The desserts were ok, but i had to remind our server i wanted decaf coffee as she was pouring my cup. Wine list has some interesting glasses/bottles and is reasonably priced. Our server was very pleasant, but there were some missteps with us and we overheard missteps at other tables. The food was ok, but not up to performance in the past. Apart from the piano player, we didn't enjoy it that much."

  • "If you have never eaten at Ophelia's in Independence, you need to do yourself a favor and vist this wonderful restaurant. It is perfect for a romantic dinner for couples. You can talk to each other in a normal tone of voice, because the noise level is muted. We always go there for important celebrations & occasions."

  • "Better known as the Chilean Sea Bass in the US, was prepared perfectly at Ophelia's. Wife and I celebrated New Years Eve here and were very pleased with overall experience. Fine Food restaurant in heart of historical Independence, MO. We sat at front table looking out over court house decorated with Christmas lights. Wife ordered the peppersteak and she enjoyed it. My Chilean Sea Bass was the highlight of my experience. Pan seared to perfection and the side dishes of spinach and corn bread side was excellent. Portion size was better than I expected from such a fine food establishment. The presentation with the sauce was excellent as they avoided putting any on the sea bass. We had great experience."

  • "Very good wine list. Excellent seafood crepe, excellent mussels with wonderful broth. Pork medallions were melt in your mouth good. Not noisy, great for conversation. Waiter was just right, spot on. Very enjoyable night, 4 adults, we all ordered something different. Will return soon."

  • "My wife and I went to Ophelia's for our wedding anniversary. When we got married in 2002, we had dinner at Ophelia's after the wedding. This time the group was smaller, but it was still a wonderful occasion. The menu is ever-changing, and they have finally hit their groove. I had the peppercorn-encrusted strip steak, and on my request, the chef very kindly prepared an au poivre sauce. We also had the pork belly appetizer, which sounds kind of gross, but was absolutely wonderful. Give it a different name, and you could make it an entree. (For the uninitiated, it is very thick slab of bacon, marinated in something really good. You have to try it to appreciate it.) Great evening."

  • "We had a great time! Will definitely return and recommend. Had wanted to go here for some time. Glad we did. Excellent food, moderately priced for quality of food. We had the Surf and Turf and the Chateaubriand in our party of 4. Great appetizers ( Portobello Rangoon Balls / Crab cakes ) Yum. Great server and service. No-one walked by without making sure we were all having an excellent experience. GM came by and we had a great conversation about local nature of the food served there. Save room for dessert!"

  • "We dined here on a Friday night. We'd frequented Ophelia's in the past and it was nice to be back. I had the asparagus bisque and my companion had the spinach salad, both were menu additions for the night. He loved his and mine was wonderful. It had great flavor and was very silky. Entrees from the menu were filet and scallops for him. Steak cooked perfectly and he could cut it with a fork. I had the pork medallions and they were quite tasty. They have a nice selection of wines which are reasonably priced. Since it was Friday, there was a piano player. Not too loud, very enjoyable. Restaurant is pretty to look at, easy to get to, and service was very professional. We'll go back."

  • "When we have visitors to the Kansas City area, we know we can rely on Ophelia's as the place to eat when visiting such sites as the Truman Library and home and the Vail Mansion. The large menu will suit every taste."

  • "My husband and I dined out for the first time on Thanksgiving. We have a large family of grandchildren and this year we thought we would avoid all the work and prep and cleanup. Worked great and exceeded our expectations."

  • "Since there were only three of us this year, we thought we'd go out for Thanksgiving Dinner and chose Ophelia's because it was close to home and has always had good food. The food did not disappoint and was outstanding. Lots of buffet choices. Many traditional Thanksgiving favorites with Ophelia's special touch. I especially loved the prime rib which I could cut with a fork. My husband and daughter especially loved the turkey. Chicken and fish were also served. I had made reservations and good thing because it was very crowded, but we were seated within a reasonable amount of time. The only downfall was all of the tables by the window were in the very bright afternoon sun. This ruined the ambience having to fight off sun in your face."

  • "We were visiting in Kansas City over the Thanksgiving Holiday and needed somewhere to eat a holiday dinner. I picked Ophelia's from internet reviews. I was not disappointed. The meat choices were turkey, prime rib, a pesto stuffed chicken breast, and tilapia. We sampled everything but the tilapia and would recommend all three that we did eat as delicious. The array of side dishes included everything you'd expect. The Brussels sprouts, stuffing, and gravy were exceptional. Desserts were also tasty. I had pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake. The other choices were pecan pie, apple pie, bread pudding, and a variety of cakes. Quick summary: It was a great meal. If we're in the area again, we'd love to try more of Ophelia's cooking"

  • "Our 2nd year (last year was better). Sat in the back and was cold. The meat station ran low and the cuts weren't the best. The dessert table at one time was almost empty, totally out of pecan pie. The brussel sprouts and asparagus, in my opinion were over cooked. Overall I would like for the food to be warmer but realize I'm eating off a buffet, so I understand. My husband just told me he went back twice to get more turkey and they were out. Our reservations were for 3, but feel we should get the same as those dining at noon. Although this sounds really critical, we did enjoy the rest of the food and the experience and will probably return."

  • "We celebrated Thanksgiving dinner there with another couple. The food was excellent and although we were the last reservation for the day, we didn't feel rushed and the food (buffet style) was all still fresh and plentiful. We would highly recommend it and plan to go back again just for the good food and pleasant atmosphere."
