A word from Open Range
Open Range is a relaxed steakhouse and lounge serving Alberta beef, lamb and game in an easygoing southwest style.

Open Range has been a top three finalist in Where Magazine's "Where to Dine Awards" - 2009 & 2010 "Best Canadian Regional Dining", and 2011 "Best Alberta Beef."

We are a unique steakhouse for Calgary because we are chef owned and operated. Chef Dwayne Ennest' back-to-basics approach is about using seasonal ingredients from local farms, and preparing his creative dishes by hand from start to finish.

  • "We had great service to start, our waiter was very knowledgeable. The casual country themed decor was great with beautiful furniture, and great paintings hanging all around, a very nice atmosphere to enjoy food with friends/family. My prime rib arrived perfectly prepared at medium rare with a side of fresh horseradish which was fantastic, and the fresh veggies they use are just amazing. I also had the goat cheese cheesecake, which was a nice treat. Next time, I'm gonna bring some wine drinkers because their wine list is very extensive and well thought out. Some people may have an issue with the price, but I checked Open Range against The Keg, and you would pay almost exactly the same there but not get near the quality of food or service."

  • "I ate here the other day. We ordered the prime rib from the Stampede menu. There is a lot of flavour going on with this dish. I do it no justice in trying to describe it, but I can say that it was interesting/unique, and I mean that in the best possible way. I reserve 5 star ratings for places that truly excite/surprise me, and very very few places manage that (I can't even think of one in Calgary). The four stars I give could easily be someone else's five. Really, this is a very good restaurant. It's quaint, well staffed, and there are some nice paintings on the walls to look at. Would be an awesome date spot for a romantic night."

  • "My guests were very happy with their dinners but I was less so. My lamb shank was dark brown and it tasted burned. My mashed potatoes were purple, made with purple potatoes...perhaps not a good choice. On the other hand, one of my guests chose the porterhouse steak and he said it was cooked perfectly. The one who chose the New York steak said it was very tender and cooked the way he had asked. Also, I don't think we should have to pay for bread and it should be brought to the table automatically, not ordered."

  • "Have had many meals here - all great. Hope last time (June 28th) was just a blip on the radar. Beef tenderloins X 2 arrived with a burnt and bitter crust and were cooked medium to medium well but were ordered medium rare. On both plates the mushroom ragout held very few mushrooms and what was presented was inedible - too tough to cut through. One steak was sent back but after 10 minutes the new one arrived well done. Elk medallions were tasty but one had too much sinew to eat. One dish (the bison burger) was, as usual , great but yam fries were too soggy to eat. Although our server was apologetic and adjusted the bill there's no excusing the kitchen for this poor quality. We plan to return as previous meals were consistent and delicious."

  • "Went for dinner on the recommendation of friends and although there were some very solid performers like the game meat appetizer and the porterhouse steak, some of the dishes were ill conceived like the Elk Diane. The Bison Short Ribs were outstanding and I thought the other dishes were solid. The service is good but the chairs are very low and uncomfortable for anyone taller than 5'6"."

I didn't love my lamb main course but the "foie gras mousse with duck confit, black truffle and stewed lingonberry" and "herbed sourdough baked with fontina and roasted garlic" appies were amazingly good and filled me up anyway. We loved the atmosphere!"

  • "This was my first time at Open Range, I have been to Big Fish on the other side many times. These two restaurants are well worth it. The food is incredible, the wine list is outstanding, and the servers are very knowledgeable and helped us pick the perfect wine pairing. I had the duck breast, and my date had the lamb shank, both were juicy, succulent and full of flavor. We both look forward to returning soon to try more of this fabulous menu."

  • "This was our second visit to open range! The food here is excellent! I have tried the duck breast and most recently the wild boar with apricot glaze i will definitely be coming back! My boyfriend enjoyed the elk Dianne both times- if you are looking for a satisfying meal good price point to enjoy good you wouldn't normally cook yourself, open range is the place you want to be! And for appetizer definitely try the escargot!! I don't even like snails and i would come back for more! Compliments to the entire kitchen and staff!!"

  • "Experience was dampered by a drink being dropped on the floor and spraying my pants and my daughters legs sprayed with glass. Waiter commented, "At least it was non staining alcohol". It was mopped up but No sincere concern of what just happened even though it drew the attention of all the patrons and no visit or attention from the Manager to offer any opologies. Dry cleaning was necessary but no offers of assistance or gesture to make the experience more comfortable. Good side was the boar, elk and bison were very good. Boar was excellent. I would recommend the food but the lack of service takes away from the food experience and makes it hard to recommend this restaurant."

  • "This is our favorite restaurant and I believe it was the 10th or 15th reservation at Open Range. We always start with the game platter of cured meats including ostrich,lamb,deer and duck salami. I had the rack of lamb (which is my favorite) and the best I have had anywhere. My wife had the rib eye steak which she stated was also delicious. I finished with a 3 scoop ice cream desert that was also amazing. The wine selection is quite comprehensive. We always leave the pairing to our server (usually Andy) and he never disappoints. He is professional, courteous, knowledgeable and always a lot of fun. I would highly recommend Open Range to anyone that enjoys fine dining! The pricing is competitive to other establishments of the same calibre. "

  • "Four diners. Seven different food selections (two had escargot). The duck was decadent, the sturgeon superb, the chicken (prepared dairy free upon request) and beef both apparently delicious. The organic field greens were crisp and fresh, and the fritters looked quite tasty. The service was attentive and cordial, the cocktails were well prepared. A cozy atmosphere with lots of artwork to entertain the eyes. I have eaten here on several occasions and I always forget how exceptionally good it has been every time. Now im hungry."

  • "We took my inlaws out for dinner to Open Range. Being from Nova Scotia, they don't have anything quite like this. Our server was very patient while my mother in law boisterously commented on the small portion of potatoes. They are used to spending $10 to get a fried meal with an extra large plate of fries. Fine dining is not something they do a lot of. We really enjoyed our food, the ambience and the dollar value was also good!"

Our food was just the right temperature when it came out and was fantastic. Our table had the Arctic char, bison short ribs, lamb and burger. Everyone was very satisfied. Would definitely recommend this venue for dates, special occasions and corporate events. "
