The main course was excellent but also - the greens were just fabulous. The side of asparagus was cooked to perfection and we had to order another side salad (served with beef burritos) because it was so tasty.

As a lamb lover, tried the lamb shank. As there was no mention of potatoes or veg on the menu, I asked our sever Greg, who explained all main courses come with both, except the lamb that comes w grits & a biscuit. When I asked if I could substitute roast potatoes for the grits, he said yes. When the meal came, it was so dark in the restaurant and the lamb was so good that it took me a while to discover I had no veg - it had not been clear that the lamb's grits & biscuit replaced not just the usual potatoes but the veg too. Greg quickly supplied a side of veg at no charge that made up for the miscommunication. The feature dessert, a chocolate brownie w ice cream & chocolate sauce, was excellent. Overall, a very good experience.

I have been coming to open range for around 5 years and have never been disappointed. It is an excellent local restaurant that showcases food offerings from the area, and is a great place to bring out of town guests who are new to Calgary. The menu rotates and always has some great selections; at my most recent dinner I had the lamb, but I've had excellent beef, elk, bison and arctic char in the past as well. Service is excellent, with waiters that are knowledgeable and attentive but without being invasive or pushy. The server at my most recent meal was sure to highlight the chef's recommendation on how to cook my lamb as well as make an excellent wine recommendation to go with it. The ambience is quite pleasant and relaxing.

I have been to OR before and it was great. This time I did not enjoy my meal at all. I had the boar and the whole meal in general was not good - the meat was so small and fatty, the potatoes were very dry, I know they werent reheated veg but they tasted like it. And then the pork fat on the plate was disturbing. I will be back to try something else however was disappointed with my meal this time.

Food came all at once despite request via server to have Chef stagger and serve as s/he saw best. So, 10 appetizers came all at once to Table for 2 and request made to at least keep food warm under heat light or use another one of the empty tables nearby. Server looks very upset, inconvienced and blamed us for ordering all at once. Foie gras pate was actually chicken liver pate. Food quality was mediocre; no creativity. At least server took off foie gras dish after noted. But great front door service by gentleman!

I reserved this restaurant because I thought it looked like a special place to take my wife for our 16th wedding anniversary. We were seated right away, but waited about 15 minutes to get our drink order in. The server apologized, and said that they seated late reservations. The bread basket came just before our meal. Our meal came to the table and we were finished our plates before our server even asked how our meal was. We noted a few tables around us that were getting great service by the same server. They were having birthdays. The food was amazing, if not for that, I am not sure if we would go back again. It is a pricey restaurant for sub standard service.

I tried to book this restaurant for a work related gathering earlier in the week but they were already full. Took my wife for our anniversary dinner on Saturday. What a great choice. Casual cozy dining area with fire place. The staff are very friendly and the service was fast. My wife had the duck and I had the wild boar rack. Both were prepared to perfection. Wine list is extensive and we enjoyed a French Merlot for $32.Finished off the meal with desserts that were excellent. Homemade ice cream on mine. The art work on display is tasteful and has a definite western theme. Most pieces are available for sale. If I have one negative comment, there is no need for the TV in the dining room.

We have been to Open Range several times over the last few years. Each time, it has been a great meal out. It's not a fast food joint, so don't expect to be in and out in a half hour. Each time we go, the food is amazing. The tenderloin is melt-in-your-mouth delightfulness. The staff there take pride in their work and have added that personal touch each time I've been. I also appreciate that they take allergies seriously. Portions are filling and the food manages to be high quality and well presented without losing a home-cooked meal feel. The only reason I would hesitate to recommend it is purely selfish, in that the more people who experience this place, the harder it may become to get reservations ;)

Lots of local product including quality beef, chicken and pork, but also elk, bison and wild boar. The wild boar is spectacular. They just happened to run out of the elk special or I would have tried that. Menu goes from the common to very unique high quality game with really good preparation and taste. Found this through Open Table, and what a find! No chain restaurant here.

We discovered this restaurant on Open Table. The food and presentation are excellent and the price reasonable. Service was just right, attentive but not over bearing. We never felt rushed and were able to enjoy a relaxing meal. The only slight problem is parking. With only about a fozen spots behind to cover 2 restaurants you may have to look at street parking but be careful as some is by permit only. Love this restaurant.

This restaurant is local to us. We take oversea guests who want to experience the Alberta Beef and they are never disappointed. I had Alberta lamb shank this time and it was superb. There are alternatives to beef if people are not beef eaters, in fact, the fish dishes looked quite tempting. Our server was very attentive without being overbearing. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation, we have always eaten well.

Great food and awesome service, first time being there and the waitress was very informative on food favorites and recommendations for wine. We had the bison flank and beef tenderloin, along with the ribs and sourdough cheese stuffed bread as apps. Reasonably priced (cheaper compared to Vintage, Ceasers, Catch) and portions were perfect - food was filling and tasted real ( organic beets and potatoes alongside locally sourced products). The atmosphere was rustic with comfortable seating and a positive ambience which allowed good conversation. Would highly recommend Open Range for the best steakhouse in Calgary. Next time will be trying the elk and sturgeon steak!

I wanted to find a great steakhouse and I found it. Had the Porterhouse, tomato bisque, scalloped potatoes (awesome), and chocolate torte for dessert, all were some of the best I've ever had. Ambiance was...odd, old western music and hard to describe decor, but I really liked it and it worked. Servers were great and even went out of their way to spend time with some overly chatty customers. I would be back more often but it's pretty pricey (for us), but it's worth it depending on the occasion.

We dine out very infrequently but Open Range was recently recommended to us. We were impressed by the nice selection of wines and beers available (although I ended up choosing a martini). The meals were wonderful - I seldom eat beef .... so when a craving for filet comes along .... it's critical that it be cooked to perfection .... as it was ! We always try to support a local establishment (as opposed to chain type restaurants). The ambience of Open Range was very enjoyable = quiet and intimate - just ideal for a date night !

We had great service to start, our waiter was very knowledgeable. The casual country themed decor was great with beautiful furniture, and great paintings hanging all around, a very nice atmosphere to enjoy food with friends/family. My prime rib arrived perfectly prepared at medium rare with a side of fresh horseradish which was fantastic, and the fresh veggies they use are just amazing. I also had the goat cheese cheesecake, which was a nice treat. Next time, I'm gonna bring some wine drinkers because their wine list is very extensive and well thought out. Some people may have an issue with the price, but I checked Open Range against The Keg, and you would pay almost exactly the same there but not get near the quality of food or service.

I ate here the other day. We ordered the prime rib from the Stampede menu. There is a lot of flavour going on with this dish. I do it no justice in trying to describe it, but I can say that it was interesting/unique, and I mean that in the best possible way. I reserve 5 star ratings for places that truly excite/surprise me, and very very few places manage that (I can't even think of one in Calgary). The four stars I give could easily be someone else's five. Really, this is a very good restaurant. It's quaint, well staffed, and there are some nice paintings on the walls to look at. Would be an awesome date spot for a romantic night.
