Ooka is a groundbreaking Asian restaurant set in the unsuspecting area of Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania. Opened in July of 2009, Ooka is setting the standard for forward thinking Japanese cuisine and gourmet hibachi in Southeasten Pennsylvania. The restaurant is highlighted by warm earth tones, deep banquets, lively hibachi entertainment and dim candlelight atmospherics. Executive Chef Shuji Hiyakawa takes a modern minimalist approach to classical Japanese dishes with utmost thought and attention to purity, simplicity and seasonality. Chef Hiyakawa keeps focus on the constant evolution of Asian cuisine keeping grounded in the classical techniques of Japan.   • "I have taken my family to Ooka's to celebrate a family members birthday. Being that I had previously eaten at a hibachi restaurant in Philadelphia before I was hoping for a great presentation while preparing the food. Our server Anna was fabulous. She was attentive and frequently returned to the table to check on our needs. Our chef, who I couldn't tell you his name, was bland and lack in showmanship. Although the food was good, the restaurant "did not steal the show!" Go to Philly if you really want to be entertained."

  • "Delicious food, beautifully prepared and presented, and unusual menu selections (to me, at least. E.g. The filet carpaccio), along with a lychee in my Lychee Cosmopoitan made my taste buds very very happy. My daughter and I visited on a Saturday night; we had used your on-line reservation system, so we did not have to wait to be seated at all. Our server was attentive and actually remembered us from a prior visit-several weeks before. We ordered a variety of small plates. I especially enjoyed the Filet Carpaccio. And because you offer soy paper wrappers (as opposed to seaweed wrappers) for the sushi rolls i was willing to try the veggie sushi and found the two veggie rolls very tasty."

  • "I have been a fan of Ooka in Willow Grove for many years. The Ooka in Montgomeryville is just as good. I tend to order from the "specials" menu -- as there are always interesting choices. I got the lobster bun --- amazingly good -- fresh bun, tasty lobster, and micro greens that brought the whole thing to life. I also got the spicy tuna pizza -- to die for. I am always delighted at this place!"

  • "We were there an a busy Sunday evening, and sat in the dining room. Our waiter was busy and seemed easily distracted. Food did not arrive quickly, but was hot and obviously freshly prepared, so that was not his fault. Food was excellent - some of the best Japanese food I've had in the area. Would recommend."

  • "I like the Ooka better in Doylestown. The waitress here at Montgomeryville site was terrible ...she never smiled. Our wine was not cold or chilled ...she just said more less she could not do anything about that...even after I asked her what they did have cold. She just brought us ice so we had watered down Pinot Grigio. Our dinner had limp broccoli rabe...overcooked teriyaki chicken. The desserts were skimpy...I rec Osaka in Lansdale and maybe the Ooka in Doylestown over this place."

My husband is a "foodie" and said he was disappointed with the quality of the sushi rice - the vinegar ratio according to him was not up to par and the consistency of his sushi rolls was sticky, not "melt in your mouth" the way he expected. I'm a celiac and our waiter, Brad, knew the menu inside and out and said all items on the menu would be made to order to not include gluten. Having been a waiter myself I can be a bit judgemental on the wait staff of a restaraunt. Brad was knowledgable and tentative the entire night and offered countless explanations to a couple with no idea what they were ordering. Besides the staff the food was amazing. Great portions and a taste only fresh ingredients could pack. I'd suggest this restaraunt to anyone that wants an upscale meal at a price that keeps your stomach and wallet full just the same."

  • "One of my favorite restaurants in the Lehigh Valley is Kome. One night I was chatting with the bartender and learned that Ooka was owned by the same person, so I decided to take some clients there. It was wonderful, equally as good as Kome and not at all disappointing. I live closer to Kome but if I am in the Montgomeryville area, I will definitely go back. There were 4 of us and we all shared some items and enjoyed our own as well. It was fabulous!"

  • "We are big fans of hibachi, and we've been to Osaka (Lansdale) and Benihana (Plymouth Meeting) for hibachi many times before. This was our first time having hibachi at Ooka, and I was impressed not only the food quality, but how different the hibachi was from other places. Ooka includes soup and salad as well as two pieces of shrimp with any meal you order. They charge $3 extra for fried rice, which is a downside, and the fried rice is not chopstick friendly (not sticky). They serve noodles in addition to rice, so the double carbs are also a little odd. The meat and vegetables, however, were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The filet and scallops were excellent, and possilbly the best hibachi filet I've ever had. Highly recommend!"

  • "I had made reservations a week in advance for the hibachi table. It was my son's birthday celebration. When we arrived, I was told they were getting our table ready and that it would be soon. We waited over 50 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. When we were being seated, I noticed a bunch of open tables with no one sitting at them. Why did you make us wait so long to be seated? We were all very hungry and grew impatient waiting around. The hostess kept telling us that they were getting our table ready (for 50+ minutes???!!!!!???) You could have seated us and started with drinks, salad and soup if the cook wasn't available. It was very poor coordination. It will be a long time before we visit again."

  • "Made a reservation, was finally seated an hour and ten minutes later. Ordered sushi appetizer and two entrees. They came 50 minutes later, with the sushi to follow. I can't believe I did not walk out. I think I was too weak with hunger. No visit from manager. No comped anything. Server was poor, didn't introduce herself, never came over to table, nothing. Absolutely horrible experience. Will never go to this location again."

  • "My wife is Japanese and we were celebrating 10 years of her moving to the USA after we had married in Tokyo. So, what better than a Japanese restaurant however being cautious of the authenticity of Asian food is always in the back of our minds when choosing somewhere to eat. We had eaten lunch at Ooka some time ago and based on that experience chose to go there for our celebration dinner. The evening couldn’t have been better, everything was excellent, the menu, service, courtesy, food and drinks. Our son was made welcome and enjoyed his favorite, cooked sushi! I would certainly recommend Ooka to anyone who likes to eat authentic Japanese food with a wide range of choices on the menu with great service and a great atmosphere.!"

  • "The restaurant was packed when we arrived, but they seated us right on time at 8:15. Our waitress was very pleasant and attentive. Unfortunately, it too quite a while for our food to arrive. With the main courses, my wife and I received our (cooked) entrees, but my daughter's sushi special "was not started yet, because the sushi bar was backed up". We finished our course before the sushi arrived. To their credit, the restaurant reimbursed us for half of her entree. Because the food was pretty good, and our waitress was very apologetic, we'll try it again. Not a very good sign for a Friday night, though."
