Had such a great experience at Tanuki Tavern and was surprised since the reviews were somewhat medicore. Thought the food and menu were exceptional, and the ambiance was great. The tables are very spread apart so you have privacy and it is great for a date. The "tapas" style menu makes it very easy to share. The rolls were solid, but the small plates were amazing. The two tuna dishes were to die for. Our server was also really attentive and gave great reccomendations. A really great choice for a relaxed sushi night.

Second time was better than the first. Authentic Japanese style food in the heart of the club scene in the meat packing district makes this restaurant that much more appealing. Go early if you want to afford the clubgoers but go later with resrvations if you want to start the night off just right. There is a pool room and the DJ starts to pump the music and the time approaches midnight.

Tanuki Tavern is in a great location, great place but looks pretty typical in decor within the restaurant itself. It's like a standard joint within a beautiful, chic hotel. Odd. The food and service are both good, not great. Again, very standard with high pricing. The unique point to this is the menu is more like "Tapas" vs. regular Japanese fare but you can choose either the tapas style or standard fare. I liked it but it's somewhat unremarkable.

The decor and ambiance were really nice however I didn't enjoy the food. The maki roll i had (dragon) was okay; the burger (yes a burger) was a bit too charred and salty and the edamame was also salty. I won't be back here for the food (maybe the apps) but I will for the drinks.

Food was good in quality but very small portions. The miso marinated cod was simply a small piece of cod, nothing else.
