A word from Onegin
Onegin is where you'll go when your usual palace just isn't opulent, caviar-y or crazy enough. You'll find smoked sturgeon by crystal-chandelier light. House-infused honey-pepper vodka from a bar made of 200-year-old Ukrainian birch. And borscht. Delivered to your red velvet throne by butler-jacket-wearing waiters.

Whether you head to the aforementioned bar, or past 19th-century carriage seats and into the brocade dining room, all roads lead to vodka. Available in a carafe, a cocktail or the spiked fisherman's soup (next-level comfort food).

The rest of the menu comes courtesy of the city's only operational Russian pechka, a wood-burning furnace that would have once been used to heat a czar's castle. Now, it'll heat your quail on a stick.

And while you wait between courses of pike caviar and pork belly pâté, you'll read Pushkin, his sketches and passages from secret journals have been etched around the restaurant in goose feather quill.

Diner Reviews
  • "Great Russian food, friendly stuff. I will definitely be coming back!"

  • "I do not recommend Onegin. We were looking for a high-end Russian restaurant and the prices did not match the quality of food. We arrived at 5:30pm and we were the ONLY table on a Saturday night! By the time we left at 7:15pm, there were only four other tables. It was dead. I ordered a glass of sparkling Rose and it was stale. My boyfriend had an infused-vodka shot that he did enjoy. The appetizers were generous in size, but nothing I would want again. My entree was acceptable, my boyfriend liked his. The atmosphere was decent. Also, the service was not friendly and I felt the server did not go out of his way to make us feel welcome, esp. as he told me to "move my phone" so he could put a plate on the table!"

  • "I came here because I purchased the Goupon deal for this restaurant that includes 2 appetizers, 2 entres, and 2 drink. I arrived at 7:45 pm, and was a bit surprise to find the was also a "lounge", not only a restaurant. The background music was rather loud for a huge place that had only about 10 patrons. The volume may be okay for a lounge but it was hard to carry a conversation. The waiters were friendly especially the main waiter, but the other one was absent minded - he took away my friend's menu despite we told him we had not ordered, and he took away our serving plates knowing that the appetizers seem to designed for sharing. The food was rustic and portion was huge. Both appetizer and entree are good for 1.5~2 people."

  • "Amazing infused vodka! Unique delicious foods! Love the decor as well. Great time! Would go again which is rare for me! I had the horseradish vodka and the seafood dish for 2. Stellar."

  • "Onegin's borscht was excellent. Fish cake was a little salty side but it was so delicious. Also presentation was great. Don't forget to order chai because it was great experience to have real Russian tea, not Lipton."

  • "Great food, the service was amazing. The atmosphere is very romantic and relaxed. Great place for a date, girls night out or just come in for some interesting flavors of the infused vodka."

  • "Onegin is a restaurant where one feels that he is eating with the Tsars. I enjoyed a meal here the other evening with a business friend and we were both impressed with the decor. We also enjoyed our meal (I had the beef stroganoff) and we were able to converse in the quiet atmosphere of the restaurant. We both felt that our food was good enough to warrant a return visit."

  • "delish food. took time to get used to the loud music. comfy seats- living room style."

  • "We visited Onegin for dinner before a Broadway show. The food was delicious and the serving sizes were large (too large for one). The serving staff was attentive but a little lacking in warmth. The room is beautiful and the music playing in the background was eclectic and nice."

  • "I really enjoyed my time at Onegin. The waiter was friendly, I received my order in a timely manner and the food was delicious."

  • "Beautiful space, with excellent food to match. Don't skip the infused vodkas, they are fantastic! The horseradish vodka is amazing, and the honey pepper packs a wallop. Went for lunch, was quiet and prices quite reasonable. Will definitely be back for dinner."

  • "Hidden in the West Village, Onegin, was a terrific find! Food was really authentic, atmosphere had avery Old World vibe... Even the waiter hardly spoke English. He was abje to make great suggestions regarding the menu, and nothing disappointed. The borscht was amazing and the beef stroganoff the best I've ever had. Definitely returning!"

  • "Great location, nice interior, delicious food. Though it is a Russian restaurant the variety of food goes beyond russian cuisine"

  • "I love the layout and the design of the place. Not exactly sure why it is in the west village area. The food was great! Seledka pod shuboi is so delicious, as well as vareniki and solyanka. The tea serving was in a traditional Russian cups. I was happy to bring my professor. He loved it a lot. "

  • "This was our first time at a Russian restaurant and we were very pleasantly surprised. Other than a couple of hiccups on the menu (things they didn't have and made substitutions for without telling/asking), the food was very good. It was also creative and attractively plated. Standouts included the borscht, stroganoff (made with tenderloin), Zharkoe (traditional meat stew), chicken Kiev, meat pierogis and pelmeni (traditional dumplings). All together a very broad menu with something for everyone. The wine list was very good and, needless to say, the vodka selection extraordinary! A great experience."

  • "We had the perfect birthday lunch at Onegin. The colors of black, white, silver, cream, with beautiful old script on the ceilings and tables gave a storybook feeling of stepping into a more elegant time. The resautrant was quiet at lunch, which I always love. The service attentive, but not intrusive. The Russian food authentic and delicious. A real New York place, imaginative and of the moment."

  • "Music could be a bit softer, but was still reasonably quiet. Would like to have more authentic heavy Russian bread. But overall enjoyable experience."

  • "You know service is bad when the blonde hostess can't take her eyes off her iPad. Waiter was disinterested. Food was terrific."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Food was good but not amazing. Prices are high if you don't have a Groupon or some discount. As for the ambience, Onegin tries to be an upscale, classic place and a night club at the same time, which creates an interesting effect. Don't miss the horseradish infused vodka."

  • "Quite good Russian food...!!! After reading varied reviews, I was pleasantly surprised. The ambiance is a little morbid."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Don't fill yourself up with bread, even though their bread and butter are really good. Appetizers are large enough to share. Sad I didn't save room to try dessert. Staff was super friendly."

  • "Uhhh...overpriced and not that good. Went on a Tuesday. Mid-meal it turned in to "karaoke night"...I mean, what? The place was almost empty already, but listening to the same two employees awkwardly sing karaoke in Russian over an overly loud sound system, with the disco lights to boot effectively cleared out the rest of the establishment. It was pretty painful."

  • "Extraordinary choices of traditional Russian fare....fantastic decor centering on the sad Onegin tale..definitely a night scene for the young too."
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "The food was excellent and the decor very pleasing, but know that this place is more of a supper club than a quiet, romantic restaurant as I thought it was from the website. Be prepared for laser lights and loud DJ music to begin at 10pm. I'd go back, but with different expectations."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "I think this place is trying to hard in it's pricing to be high-end, but the attention to detail and staff just aren't up to scratch for NYC high end standards. It's trying too hard to be sophisticated, when it's really not."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "I enjoyed Onegin more than I thought I would. I was worried about it being too loud, but an early reservation ensures that you can speak to your friends/date without having to yell over a DJ. The decor is great and everyone dresses up to go there. The food is delicious and decadent, especially the desserts. The infused vodkas are wonderful, but try some of the classic sipping vodkas, too (the Classic Beluga is amazing). It makes for a great evening, but I'd try it for lunch, too. Just be prepared to pay. It's worth it for special occasions. We had a blast."

  • "The infused vodkas are a must-try. The food is also very tasty. I recommend the borscht. A bit overpriced... but I attribute that to eating out in New York in general. The ambience is great. The overall decor is beautiful and uniquely Russian. The service can be a little slow. But overall I would still recommend this restaurant. Great option for a romantic date."

  • "Went with friends for a Birthday celebration. Food is OK but not spectacular, at least what I had. My friend's spinach mashed potatoes were great but not hot enough. My veal stew was run of the mill. I have vareniki for an appetizer and they were delicious. The pierogies were not as expected - there were more like turnover (puff pastry with filling) instead of a dumpling."

  • "Omg I've been craving their grilled oysters...and I'm not an oyster or mussel kind of person. The red snapper was really good and so was the salmon my bf had. Def will be going back. Their cocktails are strong, but bc it taste good you won't notice it much."

  • "Had my birthday with 2 other couples. Loved the food, service and music. I wish it had a dance floor since the music was awesome!"

  • "Was so disappointed by the service at this restaurant."
    Dined on 10/10/2013
  • "My wife and I ate at Onegin the other night and it was very good. The beef stroganoff was outstanding as was the salmon which was fresh and cooked to perfection. There is a large bar scene there with more vodka than imaginable, but the restaurant is separate and conducive for a good Russian meal. We will return for the very good Russian food and the diverse menu."

  • "The food was delicious: savory and flavorful. The stew was rich with vegetables, meat and a wonderful sauce. The appetizers we had were delicious."

  • "Soup and stew were very tasty. The Chicken Kiev, took about 45 minutes to prepare, which the waiter only mentioned 40 minutes into our wait. However, once it arrived, it was delicious! The restaurant is romantically designed and fun to look at. The waiters were friendly and helpful and even lent us a book about Onegin to explain the restaurant name. We'll go back."

  • "There is nothing good I can say for this newly opened Russian restaurant. Or is it a disco serving lousy Russian cuisine? Service was slow, the food was sub-par. I had the Golupsie (stuffed cabbage leaves) that was poorly executed. I love this dish and have it any time I go to a Russian restaurant, and this was, hands down, the worst execution I've ever had served to me. For my entree, I had the veal stew. The veal was overcooked. Oh wait!! I do have something good to say about this place: the potatoes in the stew were done properly. They should note on their website that they turn into a night club after 10. The music was so loud that I had to shout to my partner to have a "conversation". And they add 15% as a tip automatically. Sad place"
