Diner Reviews
  • "There were 6 in my party and no one was crazy about their meal. "

  • "Holy Moly! I was celebrating my birthday and One North went over the top ... making sure I knew I was being celebrated! The food, as usual, was wonderful. The special of the day, Farfalle pasta with tiger shrimp...spicy, but not too spicy with a sauce reduced to the point it clung to the noodle so every bite had just the right amount of sauce. Baby kale salad with sesame chicken was remarkable...the kale was sweet, not bitter, and the chicken crispy and seasoned to perfection! One has to have the brussel sprouts and spaghetti squash...those two never disappoint! dessert was a keylime creme brulee that was absolutely extraordinary. There is no better place in chicago to celebrate!"

  • "I would give them higher ratings but for two things. My assistant ordered a flatbread, and the crust was burnt. Like parts of it were black. I would not have allowed this to go out of the kitchen if I were the chef. Second, it really is loud, making conversation difficult. We were seated near the windows, so that helped some. The food is good, but I might choose another comparable restaurant in the vicinity over One North due to these two factors."

  • "I love this restaurant's food, location, and good service. They really try but I took a client and candidate for an interview last Friday for lunch, and the noise level was horrible. We were literally screaming to hear each other. And so was every one else in the restaurant. This has been a reoccurring problem here. And it has nothing to do with a loud bar scene because it was lunch. One North should really try to address this issue. It's a known fact. When I told the client we were going there, he said , "oh, I love that place but it's so loud. ". I will not be going there for another business lunch. Too bad, because the food is good."

  • "They fixing the noise level problem. This is one of my Chicago favorites."

  • "We enjoyed our lunch there. Prices were moderate. The Food and service were good. The noise was the only draw back. It is really loud in there even talking just to the person next to you."

  • "We went on a Monday evening for dinner, so the restaurant was fairly quiet, which was nice. I had the salmon, which was delicious, and my husband had the steak which was also well prepared and tasty. The service was attentive without hovering. Overall, we had a very nice, pleasant experience."

  • "Really fun experience. Service was great. Wait staff had a lot of personality. Food was excellent. Good presentation, interesting choices, and great flavors. It will be our go-to place foe pre-lyric meals"

  • "The gourmet grilled cheese was outstanding. The service was slower than anticipated, even before the lunch rush."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "The noise level - just from conversations in the restaurant - was so high that it was virtually impossible to hear my guest without leaning within a foot of him. This is not a good restaurant for a business lunch."

  • "They must have a new chef and management. We have been going there for years before we go to the opera but something has changed. Very good change."
    Dined on 3/17/2014
  • "Good atmosphere, service and food. It is close to the office and a good meeting place for business and personal get togethers. Prices are reasonable."
    Dined on 3/17/2014
  • "very nice room; noisy for lunch, but great location. Also very convenient for the Opera"
    Dined on 3/17/2014
  • "Busy, bustling noisy - but with great soups and salads - recommend going later lunch hour so you can hear your lunch partner speak! Would be great if iced teas were offered in more varieties."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "Food was okay. I won't come back as it was way too loud to have a meaningful conversation"
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "Usually I stay with my favorites...grilled caesar salad, harvest flatbread...if it is a celebration, the scallops which are nothing short of sensational. the appetizer section is so appetizing that sometimes i order the buffalo chicken sliders with the best brussel sprouts you have ever ever had! But i decided to try THE PULLED BBQ CHICKEN SANDWICH ON A PRETZEL ROLL. O M G! So wonderful, so delicious. the housemade bbq sauce is worth noting...this is no open pit, that is for sure...i can hardly wait to go back and order it again!"

  • "I enjoy eating here. One thing that I forgot about is how loud it gets. Tough to have a business lunch there but the food and service can make up for that."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "I had a business lunch here for the first time. Everything was very good except it was too loud. We both commented that we really like this place but they need to do something about the crowd noise. Simply installing acoustical panels would easily solve the problem."
    Dined on 3/10/2014
  • "Excellent food with good portions for slightly above average prices for a sandwich and fries. I had the roasted turkey sandwich and everything about it was awesome! I don't usually get too excited about a sandwich but the bread, avacados, and aioli were so well balanced."

  • "The menu provided a good selection of entrees, salads and appetizers. The tomato pommodoro soup was very good-served piping hot. The whitefish was good, although a bit overshadowed by the accompanying vegetables. Our server was attentive and thoughtful; she proactively took our order and made sure we were pleased with our meal. Although the bar was a little noisy (probably because of the acoustics of the room), we were able to have a conversation without shouting."

  • "If the service were any slower this would be a serve-yourself-cafeteria. Honestly, 3 people standing around at the check-in counter, chef wandering around the room talking to customers, and then a couple of poor waitresses scrambling to serve dozens of tables with no one else helping! Can't "management" help out in busy times? There were 15 minute blocks of time when we didn't see our waitress. and when she did, she was rushing by so quickly we couldn't even catch her eye!!! Are you surprised that it's crowded on a Friday night when you're across the street from the opera house on a performance night? C'mon! You have a gold mine there with your location, good food, and nice spacious room, but you must, must, must improve the service!"

  • "We had a noon reservation for a business lunch and were seated right away. Unfortunately, either no one told our waiter, or he was so busy with the party of 20 next to us, that we were left with our waters and menus for 20 minutes. Once we flagged down the bus boy to find us a waiter, a friendly and apologetic waiter who obviously wasn't assigned our table took our orders and got our food right out. The food tasted great, but one person ordered the Kale Salad and it had no kale. The greens were just mixed greens - mostly arugula. Such a strange lunch."

  • "Wonderful restaurant for lunch or dinner when you are attending the opera. Right across the street from the opera house. Outstanding service and presentation, try the sea scallops or fish. Interesting appetizers and desserts."

  • "This restaurant across the street from the entrance to the Lyric Opera is used to serving a restaurant full of people between 5:30 and 7 pm. The food is good, in the sense of solid rather than excellent. It is a reliable place to count on before an evening at the opera. I have been surprised to find they had run out of some basic items on busy weekends, but we always find something good to eat."

  • "We were glad to go back to One North. It had been a while and we were pleased to see they have made changes, good ones. There are more options for light meals, nice variety including some Mexican items and special menu for opera goers. I had a flatbread that was great (chicken, salsa verde, etc) and my husband had a bacon risotto, which he said was excellent. Service was prompt and accommodating."

  • "This is such a convenient place to go for dinner before taking in an opera at Chicago Lyric -- it's right across the street. Food was excellent, service very friendly and efficient. The only thing we didn't like was the boom-boom-boom of the techno-type music playing, but we'd still go there again."

  • "I hosted dinner at One North because I could count on, with certainty, fabulous food. One of my guests had to manage a gluten free diet situation, and Chef Piper, jumped in and delivered a SENSATIONAL meal! Gluten free and vegetarian requirements were met with gusto! Wonderful housemade hummus with a wonderful crudite platter...but still, her great housemade pita chips were served to those of us not gluten challenged. A new planked salmon, and a new prep for her wonderful scallops made everybody happy! Another outstanding meal from Chef Piper! On a scale of 1 to 10, i give it a 15!"

  • "My mother was visiting from out of town and I brought her here for lunch before we went to Union Station (about 10 minutes away and MUCH better than station fast food!) our server Michael was fantastic! The food was AMAZING we were able to try some of their new menu items. Our drinks, soups, lunch and dessert were all perfect, flavorful and filling! The staff is very courteous & personalizes your visit for you. Always a pleasure at One North!"

  • "Service was so constant that we could not hold a conversation. Wait staff wanted to clear dishes before we were finished w/a course. We had great food & were out in under an hr. - but it was not enjoyable being so rushed. Food was really good but I probably will not return - we had a better experience across the street for the same pre-opera dinner."

  • "Great spot if headed to the Lyric Opera, since it's across the street. Outdoor patio fronting Wacker for warm weather. Noise level is high, requiring yelling at dinner mate to be heard. Decent food and service. The kale salad was a tasty surprise."

  • "Had lunch. Loud restaurant. Had wonderful service. Love that the server got us in and out for our work time table/lunch hour. We all had a variety of dishes. I enjoyed the pork and chicken tacos. But we ordered two different Mac and cheese dishes for the table and shared. Delicious! If I didn't feel So guilty I would just order that for my lunch."

  • "Food is consistently good. Don't go here if you want to have a quiet conversation, the acoustics are very bad and it is very loud. Fun place to go after work for a drink and an appetizer."
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "PLUS: Terrific location to Lyric Opera; good menu and decent food; very good service. MINUS: Loud, Loud, Loud. You have to yell in order to be heard. Make sure you're sitting close together! Will we go again? Probably. You can't beat the convenience, the food is decent, and the menu has good options including sustainable and organic suppliers."

  • "Perfect location for pre-Lyric attendance. Joined by my 14-year old granddaughter, it was our first experience at One North highly recommended by a Lyric staff member. We both enjoyed our inner.... even though I needed it prepared specially for dietary reasons. We would definitely return!"
