A word from One North
Floor to ceiling windows provide an incredible facade of the historic Chicago Lyric Opera House. Mahogany and slate flooring, flagstone walls, deep leather booths, and an open kitchen provide a warm atmosphere ideal for business meetings, intimate dinners, private events and pre or post opera performance cocktails. Conveniently located near CTA public transportation and the Metra stations. Chef Laura Piper has created an American Contemporary menu that proudly serves Miller Farms antibiotic and hormone free poultry and sustainable seafood. The menu pairs well with the extensive craft beer selections, unique artisanal cocktails, and impressive wine list.

Diner Reviews
  • "This is the perfect place to get lunch outside on a nice day in the financial district. The food is very good, but reasonably priced, and the service is attentive."

  • "Wacker Drive is a relative restaurant desert, at least in comparison to the areas a few blocks east or west of this unique thoroughfare. If all you want is coffee or fast food, you're set. Otherwise, One North and Lloyd's are your two primary options and they fill up fast at lunch. One North has a varied menu and the food is not quite epicurean, but you are unlikely to have a bad experience there. On our last visit, we enjoyed tables outside, shaded by the building next door. The waiter refilled our drinks often enough, which is a big issue for me, and the prices are reasonable."

  • "This is a great place for lunch and perfect for groups of 6-8. Menu has plenty of options."

  • "Overall a good experience, although it was warm inside and the noise level was too high."

  • "Met a friend at One North prior to moving out of town. The restaurant is close to each of our jobs and respective train stations. Our evening began with gazpacho, which was delicious. While it wasn't a terribly hot day the soup was refreshing. For dinner, my guest chose the scallops and I the pasta with shrimp and white wine lemon sauce. Both entrees were very good and would recommend."

  • "Promptly seated at 11:30am. Service was efficient and friendly. Atmosphere is great. You can dine inside or out. Recommend that you arrive prior to noon as the restaurant fills up quickly. Was completely full by 12:30pm"

  • "I've eaten at One North several times and have not been impressed. This time the food was good! Maybe its just what I'm ordering, but I would definitely go back and order the cheeseburger again. The turkey club my friend was eating looked really good, too! And, food was hot."

  • "Way to LOUD. Do not go there for a business lunch or dinner"

  • "We had a reservation for three and were meeting a client for our first lunch together. Myself and my associate arrived 10 mins early and were at first ignored by the hostess and then greeted by a second hostess when she arrived back at the desk. My name was on the reservation and she asked if we would like to be seated. We chose to wait and greet our guest upon their arrival. We waited a full 20 mins, the hostess checked with us once in-between to see if we wanted to be seated without our guest, we declined. We finally received a call from our guest from inside the restaurant explaining that she had arrived 15 mins early and was seated by the hostess after giving my name on the reservation! For 20 mins my guest was left waiting!"

  • "This place used to be my go to for colleagues first days or special lunch. My last experience has me looking around for other restaurants like Townhouse or Primebar instead. The food was good again but the service plain stunk and I was even charged for someone else's whole table in addition to my table. Okay place but just because it's in UBS' building doesn't mean it's top notch."

  • "I've been going here for years, and it is always very good to excellent. I wasn't overly impressed with my turkey club, though it did have some unique flavors. All-in-all, this remains one of my favorite lunch spots in the loop."

  • "Took some out of town relatives here before a show at the Lyric and probably wont go back because it was so incredibly loud that we couldn't have a conversation at our table. "

  • "Went here before the Sound of Music, and it was the Sound of Crowds. Very crowded, very noisy for this old guy. Service and drinks were great; our waiter was super great. Had a $32 strip steak which was not a strip steak in shape, ordered med rare and it was med well. I can buy a better strip steak at jewel from the counter. Roast potatoes and heirloom carrots were excellent. My other half ordered mac and cheese and it looked like Kraft out of the package, kind of disappointed. Doubt I will go back as I never go to the opera, and work completely on the other side of town to go for lunch. Obviously a regular crowd there, so you try it and let me know what you think."

  • "This is a wonderful place with great food and service! Perfect location for Lyric Opera fans, as well as train commuters. Live this place!"

  • "The ambience is so loud it's almost impossible to have any conversation or hear the waiter. It's too bad because service is good and food too. They should just make this a bar."

  • "We chose this restaurant because of its proximity to the Lyric Opera House. It was somewhat disappointing. The grilled calamari was excellent. The grilled scallops were outstanding. They had a nice char and although not translucent in the middle, they were excellent. The New York strip steak though was a big disappointment. I was hoping for a nice think steak but what arrived was a thin, bone in, strip steak that was overlooked. I asked for medium-rare and it was medium, at best."

  • "I have been a huge fan of One North Kitchen ever since Laura Piper took control of the kitchen (and a million other nuance items!) Chris Lister is a terrific manager, too! The menu has new items...chicken wing appetizer...baked not fried with a remarkable mediterranean rub...unbelievable! Piper has redone the burger, now stuffed with gouda and a chipotle sauce that is simply unbeatable! The miller farm fried chicken cannot be beat! How she gets it crisp but moist...do not know! Cannot complete the review with paying homage to the brussell sprouts...OMG...did not think it could get better...but it did!"

  • "One North is the closest restaurant to the Civic Opera which is why we choose to dine there on a Friday prior to the Sound of Music performance. Although our party of seven was escorted to a table immediately, the wrong one initially, we had to ask twice for a server just to order our drinks. We received them 20 minutes after our arrival. When we asked if there were offerings for children, the server just looked at us blankly. We ordered, even asking for buttered pasta for a child with the hopes that the kitchen would produce it. The food was OK, but nothing special and certainly only served luke warm. The bright side was desert - delicious! We had to ask for everything - refills, bread, etc. "

  • "I chose One North Kitchen because of it's proximity to The Lyric Opera House. I was amazed at how loud it was. We could not hear each other speak. I would not call it energetic. I'd say that the noise level was annoying. We were seeing The Sound of Music across the street so the location was perfect. We were seated near the bar seating (I should have asked for a different seat placement) with my elderly father-in-law and his friend. We had difficultly even directing our voices to one person, much less engage in a conversation with four people. The food service was very slow and the food mediocre. I will not return."

  • "It is directly across from the Civic Opera House so very convenient. They also have an opera menu if you're tight on on time. The food was very good but don't count on 'American' size portions. I had plenty but my husband could have had another piece or two of fish and chips. The staff was superb! The acoustics are terrible so you have to shout to be heard. That was really the only negative. "
    Dined on 4/30/2014
  • "The service was attentive. The food came fast (which was good). But it was just ok and the noise level required our four top shout at each other to talk. Not what I wanted for a business meeting. Once it cleared out we could talk. "

  • "The service was terrific and the food delicious....because of the time my colleague and I scheduled lunch, everything was relaxed and the noise level much better than the 'noon rush'. Positive scores overall."

  • "One North Kitchen and Bar is a perfect spot to meet and eat before hitting a show at The Lyric. When I made the reservation, I put in the special comments that we would have to be on our way by 6:30 or so to get to The Sound of Music, and the waiter kept us on schedule. He suggested that we get food orders by phone from two of our party, who were still on the road, and right before they got there, he put in their martini orders (which arrived just a minute or two after they did!!) They moved things along without hurrying us. The sandwiches and salads were really good. It was bit noisy, but "energetic" is a good description."

  • "Extremely loud. Difficult for any conversation. Very conveniently located for the opera house."

  • "For three former coworkers, a birthday was the perfect reason to dine at One North. The flat-bread here is amazing, so crispy and light! The Gouda puffs were recommended by our waiter and did not disappoint, while my favorite was the prosciutto wrapped shrimp. The three shrimp were grilled and served with some delicious white beans. Our waiter, Julio, was very attentive and helpful. The highlights were the bacon risotto, creamy and the right combination of flavors, and the bone-in rib-eye which was perfectly grilled and accompanied by mashed potatoes and a veggie. Specialty drinks were creative - try the adult Black Cow for a decadent treat! I can't wait to come back here."

  • "Our lunch consisted of 4 people in a horseshoe booth. Even in these close quarters we could not hear each other's voices let alone have a conversation. The food was good but the conversation was a bunch "pardon me and whats". We could not hear a word that was said the entire lunch, it was a complete disappointment."

  • "Holy Moly! I was celebrating my birthday and One North went over the top ... making sure I knew I was being celebrated! The food, as usual, was wonderful. The special of the day, Farfalle pasta with tiger shrimp...spicy, but not too spicy with a sauce reduced to the point it clung to the noodle so every bite had just the right amount of sauce. Baby kale salad with sesame chicken was remarkable...the kale was sweet, not bitter, and the chicken crispy and seasoned to perfection! One has to have the brussel sprouts and spaghetti squash...those two never disappoint! dessert was a keylime creme brulee that was absolutely extraordinary. There is no better place in chicago to celebrate!"
