Diner Reviews
  • "For a $400 meal for 3 people, the food should have been outstanding, and it was not. Your money is better spent at other fine dining establishments. I'm not sure why people come to this place, because besides the food being just okay, the service was definitely sub-standard. First, a soup appetizer arrived with no spoon. Then when entrees arrived at our table, they had not replaced our silverware. Additionally, we only had 3 courses, and yet service took over 2 hours for our dinner. I'm used to 2-3 hour dinner, but where we have more than 3 courses. Food tasted okay and was very slow to come out. Service was subpar. For $400, it should be an outstanding meal, and it was simply an ordinary "home-cooked" meal."

  • "If you are looking for an elegant spot to host a brunch or party then go straight to One If By Land Two If By Sea and book a table by the window. The food is sumptuous and the garden view will make you feel like are vacationing in the Enchanted Forest. And the iced latte's are the best in city."

  • "Our second time to1BL2BS... My birthday... The hostess made sure we got our garden seat and asked to move us.. Thanks! I wasn't too thrilled on the paella.. It was bland and under cooked.. Other than that the experience was wonderful!!!"

  • "Excellent Service with even better food! My wife and I had the Chef's tasting menu and it was without a doubt the best dining experience of my life."

  • "In such a great and pricey restaurant, the service cannot and should not be anything less than brilliant. I experienced an inattentive, uninterested, tired waiter who could not wait to see how much tip he got. Not very classy. The live music/ambience was great, and the food was good (though not excellent). The price for the food does not match the quality. The ambience would be the only reason to come back."

  • "The ambiance is SUPERB! Romance is in the air...the staff s attentive and professional. The food is good. I recommend the Tasting Menu. This is the place to get engaged or really impress some one you want!"

  • "Rather than appetizer, salad etc. this menu is small plates, medium, large and to share. We ordered two medium and one large to share. We are on low carb diets..(stupid to eat out...we know). But none the less they were very accommodating. Extra veggies instead of grits or potatoes. The scallops were the best I've ever had, my husband said the steak was good. We shared the lobster. It was good. The service was excellent.the place is pretty and flowers lovely. All in all a lovely evening."

  • "Sad that one of the city's most romantic restaurants has just failed on all levels. The lack of customers in the bar and the dining room showed that clearly the place has been on decline for a long time. Frankly, it is not even worth my time to say how horrendous it was in great detail but almost every dish went back and the ones we kept were because we were starving. Nice to know I kept the tabule and my date paid a fortune for it. He liked the peas and we are not a vegetarians. dump dump dump .....never going back."

  • "So exclusive they only have the address in front of the restaurant. Very classy with piano playing when you first walk in. Main meal was delicious and beautifully prepared."

  • "Been many years since going to OIBLTIBS & it was not close to what it was in beauty, food, service, overall experience. Disappointing."

  • "It is just a wonderful restaurant, nice ambiance and great service. What we especially liked is the quiet atmosphere as you do not need to scream when you want to have a conversation, however, and most important, the food did not impress us much. It sounds sophisticated on the menu, looks good on the plate, but tasted boring and we would not go again for the food. The lobster papardelle were ok, but we also had monk fish, starters and dessert... The bar is nice and good for a drink! We were a party of four and would not recommend going there again."

  • "Food excellent, slightly quirky environment, almost Adams-family like. Service with a hint of sinister potential lurking. A good evening nonetheless"

  • "There are not enough words in any language sufficient enough to adequately describe this restaurant. Excellent would be a good start. I now understand why it is consistently voted most romantic restaurant in the New York."

  • "waiter a little inexperienced, should be able to intimately describe menu, not open it in front of guest and point out this or that. cocktail glass had crack in it. ordered a Kir (white burgunday and creme de cassis), told him that, but received a Kir Royale (sparkling with chambord). Good but not what I ordered. No pre fix in the summer and I had been on website so was looking forward to that. One of our guests raved over the appetizers and the octopus was also good. The signature Beef Wellington was very flavorful, but a true smear of sweet potato and a couple of young vegetables, could have been highlighted a lot more"

  • "romantic dinner for two. we shared their signature dish - beef wellington. added some appetizers, side dishes, a couple of cocktails, and one dessert. $300 with the tip. other than the price, we enjoyed and left very full."

  • "Another fancy joint that thinks so highly of its own glowing reviews that they serve up mediocre food that is vastly over-priced in a noisy environment with inattentive service. The best thing about this place was the bread guy and the water guy, we received the most value of the night for my money. The food from the smallest, slightly small and small tiered menu at outrageous, more outrageous and most outrageous prices is pure theft. Most of those Google reviews I believe are a load of cognitive dissonance, rationalization for beings suckers. Don't you be one."

  • "One if by Land, Two if by Sea is tucked away off Bleecker Street. It is a romantic spot with mood lighting, a live pianist, and nice decor. Come here for great food and service. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion."

  • "I was dining alone, but even though One If By Land Was a "romantic" place, I felt comfortable and well cared for. Food was delicious and inventive (the little slice of pickled rhubarb on each raw oyster ahas inspired). I shall return, next time with my Main Squeeze."

  • "First time diner here. We enjoyed the ambiance of the room, not the food on our plates. I had their steak. It was prepared as I ordered , but the quality of the beef was poor. Very chewy and dry with no taste. The salad I ordered was warm and the utensils were hot to the touch right from the dishwasher. My date had the frog legs which were quite good. My favorite restaurant is Minetta Tavern. This could be my new favorite, if the food is better my next visit. I'll give it another chance in hopes that my poor meal was just a first time fluke."

  • "We all know it's romantic. My oysters on the half shell were room temp...maybe that brings out the flavor? I prefer them bracingly cold. And the Beef Wellington is everything you've heard, but a bit overpriced at $55.00. Staff is lovely. You won't go wrong here, but it's not a cymbal clash, exactly."

  • "My wife and I went for our anniversary and One if by Land was exactly the right spot! The food is excellent. The oysters were positively divine, the monkfish delicious, and the beef wellington perfect. The service was very friendly and very attentive. The wine list was, somewhat surprisingly, quite affordable. It's not cheap, but the food and the ambience are worth it."

  • "It was great dining expirience in the odest restourant of NYC! I recomend!"

  • "The food and atmosphere are outstanding. The only issue was that as 2 women dining alone we were treated as if we were not there. There was less interaction, less conversation, with a blatant disregard for us as diners. This happens more frequently at finer establishments."

  • "After extensive research to find that perfect "special occasion" restaurant, I chose "One if by land". We were first greeted by the sound of soothing jazz from a pianist next to the bar. In hindsight, we should have stopped at the bar and enjoyed the wonderful dinner experience at the bar. But, and as I requested, we were seated in a upstairs corner table and this assisted in intimate close conversation. Next, we started off with a wonderful bottle of merlot. Then, we selected the tasting menu. Each small course was well presented and by the end we were unable to finish the small courses. The unusual tasting menu and the time between servings allowed us to focus on our special day conversation, of which I can remember each detail."

  • "Great food -lobster papardelle and beef wellington were amazing. Wine selection was great, and overall service was spot on! Dined here during our honeymoon and couldn't have chosen better!"

  • "Very well done- Some dishes amazing ( Gazpacho- - Grits served with the Monk-fish) other just good but not overwhelming) My wife's Wellington came half medium rare & half Medium- how did that happen- Servers a little amateurish- One could not pronounce the Wellington sauce ( Chasseur) & she was served a glass of red wine with wine spill on the base of the glass- Gordon Ramsay would have flipped !"

  • "One If By Land Two If By Sea is the perfect place to start your summer weekend. Friday night dinners seem special when you book at a table with a view of the garden. The Saturday and Sunday Brunch menu has items that you can't find anywhere else. When in doubt order the Eggs Arcadia and an outstanding iced latte."

  • "I wanted to take my girlfriend to a romantic restaurant for her birthday. We were greeted upon arrival and our table was ready. We had a beautiful table for two next to the window looking out on the garden. She was quite impressed. We both had the beef Wellington ( delicious). The vegetables wee not as hot as I like but still very good. Desert was excellent. What made the evening was the superior service. That is what separates very good from outstanding. Thank you for a wonderful evening."

  • "The service was great and the wine recommendation was exceptional but the good kind of stopped there. There wasn't anything wrong with the food. It just wasn't remarkable and at this price level I expected to be impressed."

  • "Not often I drop $800 on dinner for two. But it was a very special occasion. The food was amazing. And very reasonable priced (it was the champagne and wine that was pricey). The beef wellington was extraordinary and truly a must have. Our server was so tragically rude it was almost funny. God bless the sommelier who was ever so delightful and saved the evening."

  • "A perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. Service was great and all staff extremely friendly! They have music most nights and we were lucky enough to hear two jazz musicians who were wonderful. Can't wait to go back again!"

  • "Best Beef Wellington in New York. Our table was incredible as was the food. Mike the bartender was a gem."

  • "The room is lovely, low noise level, and a pianist for ambience. Food also looks lovely with great plating and presentation, but some discordant flavours (lentils for an amuse bouche? - hardly stimulating for the taste buds) and lack of attention. The pappardelle lacked the full range of promised ingredients and an otherwise well-executed lemon pudding was let down by mushy blueberries. The chocolate dessert was excellent and the appetisers showed quality produce and preparation. The welcome was warm but service was patchy. Overall, a reasonable experience, and particularly good for those who want to converse without shouting, but there is better value to be had at many other nearby restaurants. Could do better for the price."

  • "So I've been at the restaurant twice, and the first time was a great experience, but the second time it wasnt that great. The appetizers were amazing (wagyu taretare and tuna crudo). For the entree we had the Tasting Lamb (which was great) and the seafood papperdelle (not so great). I rarely return food but I returned the paperdelle because it was overly salty and felt like i was eating rock salt. They remade me the same dish, but still was overly salty and this time less seafood. So I'm really disappointed. As far for the dessert not really impressed with the semolina cake (it was slightly frozen). Overall, the food quality and quantity is not worth the prixe fix price."

  • "I have been here numerous times with my girlfriend...now, fiancee. This restaurant is truly one of the more romantic in NYC. The food is always outstanding and the service and attention to detail impeccable. That is why I chose this as the perfect setting to propose over brunch. We are very low-key so it afforded us a level of intimacy even though there were other people dining we felt as if we were the only couple there. Afterward, as we were about the leave the hostess offered us complimentary champagne as well as a desert plate which spelled out "Congratulations." Very classy restaurant that I would have no reservations recommending highly to anyone. Thank you for making our day special!"

  • "The waiters and waitresses were very accommodating - our table was wobbly and having failed to fix it several times, moved us to a table overlooking the courtyard (we were even offered a corner table by fellow patrons). The food was very tasty - I had the pork belly to start, beef wellington as a main and finished on the lemon cake. It was tremendously filling, but the attention to detail was fantastic - particularly the decor around the wellington (the croquettes were a shining star). The ambience is what was expected from "New York's most romantic restaurant", with the backdrop of the pianist playing jazz tunes. I would recommend this as a special occasion restaurant - even if it just means taking that special one out for a lovely meal."

  • "Ate there ten years ago. It was wonderful. Last night - a terrible disappointment! We went to celebrate a birthday and anniversary. They were tarnished by the restaurant. Warm white wine. Contrived menu! Felt like I was at the taping of one of thse cooking shows where they give a chef ridiculous ingredients to see if they can make something palatable out of it.The kitchen FAILED! Flavorless, undercooked contrived entrees. Appetizers that could only be called a childish failure. And terribly inadequate air conditioning. The ONLY redeeming elements of the evening - the decor, my wife and the memories. We'll choose another restaurant in the future. TERRIBLY DISAPPOINTING. "
