One if by Land, Two if by SeaWonderful Romantic Gourmet DinnerThis is a high quality Prix Fixe gourmet restaurant on a quiet side street in the West Village area. The interior decor is of a colonial tavern/inn, matching the name. But the candles and the soft live piano music creates a more formal and special ambiance.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was wonderful includingFood was wonderful including creative desserts; service outstanding and warm. Extremely beautiful decor.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat for special occasionFood was good, the ambiance is part of the price. Upstairs by the balcony affords a great view of the downstairs dining area. Service was attentive and very accommodating.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMPaul Reverewhat a cute little gem in the village. inside you really feel like you're in paul revere's house with the turn of the century wallpaper, chandelier, etc. the menu is a bit pricey. prixe-fix $90, chef tasting $125, vegetarian tasting, etc. before going, just know that the whole table has to do chef tasting or vegetarian tasting. the food is what you would expect for a fancy expensive place, rich in both price and taste5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMWhat a gem! Will surely return! Wonderful dinning experience-- fantastic food, attentive and helpful service, romantic ambience. What else could you possibly want!5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMRUSTIC with CLASSLoved it from the moment we stepped in. We sat at the copper-topped bar near the pianist and trumpeter before dinner. I had an amazing Sazerac, my girlfriend had the Coupe D'Amour (highly recommended). In the dining room we sat by the tall windows facing a very nice garden and what looked like a very unassuming, ivy-laden entrance to the apartment building above the restaurant. Appetizers (the scallops and spring pea risotto) were amazing, perfectly cooked. The main, a perfectly prepared beef wellington for her, and a succulent osso bucco for me. And finally the passion fruit flan and the chocolate & caramel pot de creme to finish off one of the best meals we've had in NY. Will definitely make an excuse to come back here again.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMQuaint in a lovely wayIt was lovely experience. I went with a friend that had been many times (in years past). And we both really enjoyed it. I will go back. It was a charming ambience. We did the food tasting with the wine pairing. They were several dishes that were outstanding and all were at least very good. The wine pairings were very nice as well.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMRomance for our 2 yr wedding anni!It was a great wedding anniversary my husband and I have lived in NYC for 10 years and hadn't been to this west village staple! It was def perfect for our anniversary dinner!!!5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was flawless matchedThe food was flawless matched only by the outstanding service. A fantastically romantic ambience and the jazz was entertaining.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMLovely romantic restaurantThis is unquestionably a lovely, romantic and refined restaurant, perfect for an anniversary, a lover's tête à tête, or simply candle-light dining in a warm and cosy atmosphere.
The cuisine is imaginative - or at least tries to be - but I would rate it as being a bit hesitant. Portions are sometimes so small (i.e. the crab), that you have trouble catching the full flavour of it. We tried the full menu, which I would rate as good to very good, but not superb.
The service is very good. At least the head-waiter is a true professional, and as soon as they train the second waiter not to point at your food when attempting to describe it, the service would qualify as "refined".
Overall a fine, romantic experience.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMAMAZINGI was blown away, great food and atmosphere! Although it is a bit pricy, totally worth it. Very romantic and quaint...it's also the carriage house of the 3rd vice president! very cool place, loved it.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was very good, serviceFood was very good, service excellent, priced right.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMExceeded expectationsRecommended by a friend and it exceeded my expectations!5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMLove this gemI have been before. The food is outstanding and the drinks are generous. The service is beyond reproach. This is why I keep returning even though I no longer live in NYC.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMAbsolutely outstanding. TheAbsolutely outstanding. The food, service and the atmosphere were perfect.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMBrilliant!I've never left a review for anything ever before. I felt I had to because it was so great here.
Went here for my girlfriends birthday on a trip to NY from London. Everything was perfect.
Not only was the atmosphere cracking, the staff went out of the way to make our night super special. Moved us to a table with a really nice view of the garden. Wrote a happy birthday note on her desert plate. All done with a smile throughout.
The food was amazing! For the love of god, please try the Wellington if you like steak!!!
I really don't understand how anyone could say a bad thing about this place.
Ok it's a little pricey ( I spent over $250) but worth every penny!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMA beautiful place with a wonderfulA beautiful place with a wonderful staff. Spending some time in the bar before dinner is a must. I'll keep coming back!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMI came here with a very goodI came here with a very good friend and we had a lovely evening; fantastic food. I had the Scallops and Beef Wellington and she had a Japanese fish followed by Tuna. But the thing that made it an absolutely exceptional evening were the desserts. Absolutely amazing! She had a passionfruit flan and I had the white chocolate mousse. One of the best restaurants I've been to. Also really good waiters - friendly and helpful but incredibly discrete.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMI have never been disapointed.I have never been disapointed. The chef's tasting is the best thing. This is a very romantic reataurant, I tend to go quite a bit and usually with friends for no reason other than I love it.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding, simply outstanding. My second time here and wow, was it special. The staff couldn't have been more genuine and polished in their treatment of me and my date. I had a little plan I wanted to do and they performed it so smoothly and graciously she was extremely happy with it and I was very appreciative. From bussers to management everyone took time to make sure we were enjoying ourselves without being overwhelming at all. It was just a great night for us. The food was much better than I remember it (last time I was there though was maybe 2010). The place is well situated so you're not crammed in next to other guests either, which is important to me. Anyway, they made what was a special night even better than I had hoped and for that I am thankful.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMvery good food but i dontvery good food but i dont think it is worth the $90 a person price tag4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMResturant was very romantic,Resturant was very romantic, food choices were special.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMI proposed to my girlfriendI proposed to my girlfriend and everyyhing was great! The best place I could choose.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMA charming romantic romanticA charming romantic romantic restaurant in an old section of the Village. The simplicity of the menu structure adds to the low stress atmosphere necessary for a mellow romantic evening. The staff is knowledgeable, very helpful and yet unobtrusive. The cuisine was superb and every dish was elegantly presented. The wines suggested were astutely matched to the food. All in all, a place to come back to often.4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMOverall experience was veryOverall experience was very good ---the food was good but not fabulous----I would have preferred an a regular menue Not price fixed4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMThis meal was probably oneThis meal was probably one of the best I have ever eaten. Top 10 for sure. We had the tasting menu and the seared gnocchi was the best thing I have ever eaten. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a wonderful romantic evening.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMThis has always been a restaurantThis has always been a restaurant to enjoy, since first being introduced to it over 20 tears ago.I have taken more people from the New York area to this restaurant, and all agreed it was very good.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMdelicates and out standingdelicates and out standing service gorgeous place. my wife had the chef special (7 courses) and i had the 3 there were kindness enough to let us do the combine and do it in a very professional and generous way. bit of expensive but worth every dollar4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMIt's "One if by Land, TwoIt's "One if by Land, Two if by Sea". You can not go wrong by choosing this restaurant. After going through the relatively nondescript entree way my date was amazed at the beautiful view of fireplaces, stained glass, the bar, the piano and of course the garden. The Big Eye Tuna and Oxtail Pappendrelle appetizers were delightful as were our entrees of smoked salmon and braised shortrib. The Expresso Souffle was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. I most also note that the wine list is extensive and the cocktails were well made. All of this in a delightful historical building on a quiet street in the West Village.4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and service. We made a special weekend trip to NYC from Austin to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary and selected this for our romantic dinner. The food was great. We had the chef's tasting menu, and WOW, it was so much food. All of it was delicious. We had to limit ourselves to just one bite for the last few courses because portion sizes were quite generous. The service was incredible; attentive and not overbearing. Unfortunately for us, we were seated next to a large party of 10 who were very loud, especially the 10 year old who was all over the place (not ideal for a romantic dinner when you are spending the better part of $500.) To the large, loud party: Please be considerate and find a more kid/family friendly place for large family gathering.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect for a night out, meetingPerfect for a night out, meeting with friends or an initmate dinner for two. You will not be disappointed.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMMy boyfriend asked me to marryMy boyfriend asked me to marry him after our amazing, wonderful seven tasting meal at One if By Land, Two if By Sea. That's how good the experience was. From the minute we walked in the door, we were greeted in a warm, laid back, but very attentive way from the hostess to the waitress. Our waitress was absolutely adorable, the ambience was perfect, and the food was spectacular. An experience that appealed to all the senses.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMO melhor !Espetacular !

Thanks!3/20/2013 12:00:00 AMThe best atmosphere and even betterWe were greeted by a lovely hostess although waited more than 15 minutes. Other diners were slower than expected. From that point on.....perfection! Pot de creme and cheesecake rich and delicious. The price fixe $90 menu provided interesting variety and everything we tried was outstanding: oxtail, octopus, lobster, and cod beautifully prepared and presented. Lovely presentation. White roses, candlelight and beautiful atmosphere make this the go to place for a special evening.3/19/2013 12:00:00 AMRomantic and cosyWe had a very good time and will probably come back! We loved the atmosphere.
My husband found the Wellington Stake superb, but I don't really recommend the nhocci.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMagain a great experienceAgain I was very happy with the food, the service and the attention to detail.
I am in NYC at least once every year since 30 years and I consider One if by Land, Two if by Sea clearly as one of the absolute best ! Admittedly the price is high but when you leave you feel that it was worth it - especially if you have been there with someone special ;-)3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Best Kept Sunday Brunch SecretOne if By Land Two If By Sea serves the most elegant brunch in the city. Came for the Wellington and loved it, great warm atmousphere, all staff were very attentive, and although we distracted our server and he forgot our first round of cocktails initially (we had wine too), he compensated in the end with extra desserts and was just so charming anyway.
