Diner Reviews
  • "Very friendly with wonderful service provided with smiles. The food was excellent. My wife's salad (I believe it was the spinach salad) was phenomenal."

  • "On our first visit to Highlands NC, friends recommended On the Verandah, and we were not disappointed. The setting and view alone were awesome (an early spring snow shower outside added to a wonderful view) The view was matched by the menu and service. Cajun scallops for appetizers, and peppercorn crusted tuna and duck breast were our entree's Portions were generous without being overwhelming. The tuna was accented with wasabi and gave it just a special flavor. The duck breast was perfect. To top it off, the Bailey's Irish Cream cheesecake might well be the best dessert my wife has had anywhere."

  • "This was our group's 3rd time visiting. All 6 of us had a great meal, the service was excellent and the surroundings are lovely and cozy. Our table shared 2 desserts and they were exceptional. We will visit again."

  • "We ate here this past weekend, and were impressed with the decor-very pretty. We were seated on the veranda, which was nice, too, if more casual in feel. There were a couple of larger groups out there with us, and we could hear everything they were saying-pretty loud outside. Inside was completely empty. Our server was nice, and made some good suggestions. We had the blue crab claws, which were tasty. They did not offer a side-sized salad, so if you wanted one, it would be an extra $10. My husband ordered the pepper crusted steak, which was so peppery he tasted it the next morning! The chef did come out and tell us to send it back next time, which was nice. I had the trout, which was nothing special. The best part was dessert."

  • "Given the high ratings, the food was good, but certainly not worth the price. Heaters are needed for eating on the porch (verandah) in the winter. We sat near the windows and froze."

  • "As usual, we had a fabulous meal. The sesame encrusted tuna was fabulous. The shortribs are always good. All the soups are great. Lexie, the bartender, always remembers what we like to drink, even when we forget!"

  • "Very relaxed, fine dining, excellent food, service was very good and so was the ambience. Highly recommend would certainly go there again. Summertime beautiful view."

  • "Our food was merely okay. My friend's beef was overcooked. We ordered a mid-priced bottle of cab that was not good at all. My wedge salad and butternut squash ravioli lacked any elements that would have made them memorable. My husband did clean his plate of short ribs. We were excited to try the chocolate creme brûlée, but once served we learned it was simply a chocolate pudding with a layer of genache on top. We were there at night and could not enjoy the view from the verandah in the dark, but the piano player inside was a lovely touch. I only wish we had been seated closer to him instead of on the crowded, glassed-in porch. Our server was overly enthusiastic and made the whole event of dinner seemed forced instead of relaxed."

  • "On the Veranda was incredible. No one in our party of 10 felt any different (we had seven adults and three kids: one 14, one 9, and one 5. From the waiter's introduction at the table, to the wine list, menu, and specials we did not have one complaint. The whilte lights around the verandah created the perfect ambiance. The piano player in the background created a beutiful relaxing setting. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone going to the Highlands...it's one you don't want to miss."

  • "We were there on a gift certificate from a friend. I found it very pricey. First bite of trout had scales, and bones in it...spit it out. Rest was good. First bite of couscous had grit in it --to the point I search my teeth for any broken fillings, found none! Spit it out also. Rest was much better. Hostess did a great job, as did Mark, our waiter. He was excellent and attentive. Pretty place...and the music was very, very nice."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at On the Veranda. I think I will always remember the bartender here who fixed us a specialty martini which had recently been featured in a magazine article about her. She personally brought us our drinks and was so pleased that we had read the article. The food was very good. I really enjoyed the short rib entree with mashed potatoes. I am sorry that we did not get to enjoy the beautiful view of the lake because it was evening and very dark. I will plan on eating here as often as I can as I own a home in the area."

  • "From the minute we ordered our food to the minute it was delivered it was less than 15 minutes.. We didn't order apps but to me it says that the sides were in warming pans... and when tasted they are were just luke warm. I had the special of the night which was a mixed seafood grill - which tasted lovely but was barely hot. I would go back again but this time I may send it back to be heated properly though it may make my protein chewy. There brunch rocks though."

  • "Our dining experience at On the Verandah was memorable! The setting was romantic with holiday lights adorning the windows and doorways, the strains of piano music playing in the background, and the food was delectable. The menu and wine list had specialty offerings that were enjoyably different. The one drawback to the ambiance was that the seating was crowded for the space, making it difficult for patrons and wait staff to move between/around tables. Despite that, I would highly recommend On the Verandah to anyone visiting in the Highlands/Cashiers area!!!"

  • "We found this restaurant by chance, it's just a bit off the main drag in Highlnands. We have been coming to Highlands for over 10 years and decided to try a new restaurant this time for one of the nights there. Always go to our favorite restaurant and now On the Veranda is right up there with our favorite! Next time we will do both!!! Both my husband's dinner and my dnner's were delicious, presented beautifully and the ambience was outstanding. Would return over and over again and recommend to others without reservation!!"

  • "This is one of my all time favorite restaurants! The view is spectacular and the food is outstanding!!! We had the most amazing waiter- Gregory! He was so friendly and knowledgeable! He let us know what to expect with the tastes and textures of what we wanted to order! Wine was reasonable compared to most and got exactly what we wanted! The manager/ owner ( not sure which) is so sweet and accommodating!"

  • "This restaurant was wonderful and if you are ever in Highlands please don't miss this restaurant. The only reason for four stars on ambiance was because of the noise level on the veranda. We could hardly hear our waitress and she had to repeat everything to both sides of the table. Otherwise this was a FANTASTIC place to dine!"
