Diner Reviews
  • "The meal was great, and we always enjoy browsing in their wine shop and bringing a couple of extra bottles home. Was thrilled to see they are selling a Fair Trade certified wine! I was disappointed that the Sea Bass was already "sold out" at 7:30 Saturday night, and blue fish was substituted. The salad was awesome-peaches, blueberries, candied walnuts and feta on arugula."

  • "Another fine meal enjoyed among friends at OTS! We always begin our meal here with their tender calamari which is served with a honey and red pepper-type glaze. Delicious and all but licked the plate clean! The salads offered were lovely, however, the watermelon salad with goat cheese could have been sweeter and served in bite size pieces. The entrees are always impressive - something for everyone - be it fish, shellfish, poultry, beef, pork, pasta, etc. OTS is always gracious enough to omit certain food items if there are "food issues" which is always helpful for us. We each enjoyed different entrees cooked to perfection with very nice presentation. The strawberry shortcake is a must for dessert. The chocolate molten cake a close second!"

  • "Took 3 guests to OTS. Been there before, and never disappointed. We started with their top notch calamari. Always a treat. Two of then had the peach, pecan, blue cheese, arugula salad. Really tasty combination and well dressed, although my guest felt peach pieces were too small. Two of us also had the cucumber soup. Excellent summertime appetizer, but richer than you'd expect. Jambalaya was a hit, as was the pasta dish. Enjoyed great wine from their wine shop, but they do need to find a way to more rapidly chill their whites."

  • "One of the very special evenings my family every experienced...and in Tarboro, N.C. Worth the trip! Already booked for Christmas family dinner!"

  • "My husband and I celebrated our29th wedding anniversary at On the Square. Our food was delicious! I had risotto and my husband had pork tenderloins. Our wine was superb and we also indulged in the peach cobbler for dessert. We have dined at Open Square several times. We have to drive about 50 miles to get there but it is definitely worth the drive."

  • "My husband and I were on our way from far southwest Florida to a family reunion in Virginia. We love to get off the Interstates and explore smaller cities and towns. Tarboro, NC, is a fine small city, with--surprise--a top-class restaurant. On the Square is charming with brick interior walls, beautiful old wooden flooring, and a superb wine selection. Prices are reasonable, especially to those used to the customary prices in the large cities of the northeast. The restaurant had several large groups, so we didn't get to talk to the sommelier. But the wine choices made on our own were better than satisfactory, and the food was excellent."

  • "All of us agreed we had a great overall dining experience. Where else ( in these parts) can you walk into a chilled wine room to pick out a great wine from a great selection to enjoy with your meal? Personally, however, I will say that my clams were a bit overcooked and too salty ... but my salad was fantastic as was everything else I ever ate there before ... and everyone else in our party loved everything. Overall, "All thumbs up" for "On the Square"."

  • "Our dinner group of 10, took a road trip from Wake Forest just to eat here. The trip was definitely worth the delightful meal. The service was attentive and professional. The appetizers were amazing. Almost everyone had the grilled romain salad. The clams were tender and delicious, but even better was the table bread soaked in the clam broth. There was no conversation once the main dishes were served other than the murmurs of delight in our dinner selections, no regrets. We all saved what little room was left for dessert and again, were not disappointed. A very memorable meal all around and well worth the drive."

  • "On The Square has a very diverse menu. You can expect to find what you may be craving as well as discovering a new favorite dish if like to try different cuisine. The food is excellent, wine selection is excellent, the portions are correct, and the service is great. It can be a little noisy depending on the crowd as the seating is very close and in tight quarters."

  • "We had heard about On the Square, and decided on the spur of the moment to go one Friday evening - it was the best date night we have had in a long time. Staff were very pleasant, food was extremely good, and ambiance of restaurant was lovely. We will definitely go back?"

  • "When you walk through the door you are greeted with a smile. Order at the counter for lunch. The food is delicious and they always have a special. Eat dessert! They had a Piña Colada pie with toasted coconut on top.... Wonderful. We have eaten there many times and have never had anything I didn't like. Dinner is a whole different experience . White tablecloth and great waitresses. The entrees are always creative and delicious . You have to make a reservation well in advance because people travel quite a distance to eat here!!"

  • "This place was marvelous in every way! Food-amazing, Service-very attentive, Location-simply great! Inez has an incredible wine list (and took the time to stop by and say "hello" as well as the added step of writing up something to learn about a specific wine for each table-this week being Riesling) and her husband, Chef Stephen, creates a new menu each week that is staggeringly good! From start to finish, we were completely thrilled with the experience and I DO recommend ordering a dessert (take the extra time and money to do so, it's worth it) or at the very least, order a dessert wine at the end of your meal (either way you will NOT be disappointed)! "On the Square" is a place you do not want to miss or rush out of! Thanks guys!!!"

  • "My wife and had wanted to try On The Square for some time. We chose to celebrate our anniversary there. The food was great, the wait staff was very attentive, and our desserts had a special message. We casually mentioned to our waitress that we were celebrating our anniversary. When our desserts arrived, "Happy Anniversary" was written in Chocolate sauce. Special event and special evening."

  • "We commonly enjoy eating here, but this was best meal ever. Enjoyed a very nice Barolo from the wine shop. Began our meal with the fried calimari, done perfectly. My guest has the grilled romaine next, while I had the soft shell crab. The crab was the best I've ever had. Large size with a wonderful sauce. My guest had the crab for her entree, while I had the pork loin chop. Done perfectly with a speculacular sauce. Service was impeccable. Worth traveling to sleepy Tarboro for meals of NYC caliber."

  • "On The Square is truly the "Gem" of the restaurants in Eastern Carolina. They have great food, great wine, and a wonderful staff that provides outstanding service. I have already a reservation for our group of 35 for 2015, and look forward to coming back then."

  • "I had been to the restaurant several years ago and quite frankly had forgotten about it. While looking for a place to go for a special celebration, I remembered On The Square. We couldn't have been happier! The service was excellent. The wine list is amazing. There were several off the menu chef specials for the night which were wonderful! Simple dishes like calamari and Ribeye steak were beyond compare. The grilled romaine salad, lobster ravioli, and chicken liver appetizer were all my favorites. It is definitely worth the trip to Tarboro! I won't wait several more years to go back this time!"

  • "My husband and I are so busy we rarely get to sit together to enjoy a meal. This was our chosen spot for our long postponed date night. We wanted an outstanding meal. Got it! We wanted outstanding service. Go it! We wanted charm. Got it!! "On the Square" is the best restaurant in Edgecombe, Nash or Wilson areas. In fact, it should be ranked as one of the best in the state. Make reservations. It's a busy place, and for good reason. It's not cheap, but a good meal with world class service never is. I promise it will wow you!"

  • "Menu was very good, even my three children found many options. There is not an appetizer section but there were 2 or 3 small dinner options that worked. Ambience is simple, a little loud but overall a good experience."

  • "I am never disappointed when I dine at OTS. A group of ladies dined last week for a birthday in the group. Absolutely delicious. The server was more than helpful. Several of us requested wine pairings with our main dish and they were on point. Thank you again!"

  • "We had a party of four, and without exception everyone raved about the food and overall experience. Cannot recommend enough. This place is a gem, located in a small out of the way town. Worth the drive from Wilson, Rocky Mount, Greenville, and surrounding area. Without a doubt one of the top 5 restaurants in east NC. Loved it and the wine selction was terrific. Drive a little and love it a lot."

  • "I have high expectations when dining at On the Square because that is their history and my experiences. The level of excellence was again met as we had agreat evening filled with fabulous food, great drinks from the bar, 5 star service, and a great place to enjoy it all."

  • "This was my 2nd time here. As expected, the food and service were very good. The portions are a little small for the price, which I could overlook given the atmosphere of this quaint neighborhood gem. But seating a party of 12 next to us rendered the noise level ridiculous! The exposed brick wall without any sound absorption act like a sounding board. It was so loud that I couldn't hear my dinner companion at a table for 2. Not the best dinning experience. However, I'd be remiss if I didn't compliment the chef on the Asparagus Risotto. Creamy, yet still tender and almost fluffy. A treat for the palate."

  • "Recommended as an excellent place for a final dinner in NC and so it proved! This place is up there with the best that America offers. Good, short menu but with plenty of choice. Superb cooking.Food and wine matches were perfect. Portion size a refreshing change from the usual NC mountains. Waiting staff really friendly and very helpful. Christian, our waitress, revealed it was her first night but she was super."

  • "I'm certain part of my overall disappointment with the experience was the expectation that this restaurant was more of a farm to table type restaurant or at least served a fair amount of local / seasonal produce and meat. I was wrong. I could have gotten past that, however, I ordered a ribeye medium rare and it was served well done and charred. I couldn't eat it. My wife's dish was actually quite good. All of the sides looked and tasted like they were straight from the can or box. The wine service was way over done and actually fell flat. We drive over 2 hours and stayed at a B&B just to have dinner at this restaurant. Perhaps for locals it's one of the better spots, but I don't recommend going to great lenghts to dine here."
