  • "I have wanted to dine at Oliveto for years, which means my expectations were set pretty high, having had the time to build in anticipation. We had a lovely experience. Food was perfect, service was well-timed. We were a group of six and the server definitely gauged our tempo correctly. We never felt rushed or like we were waiting in the 3 hours we spent at our table. In particular, the server's knowledge of wine helped us take our meal to the next level--everything was perfectly paired. Also, I would mention that while this restaurant is pricey, the portions are definitely American-sized. One could share or count on leftovers for sure!"

On this visit they were introducing a Spring Flair, so most dishes were vegetarian, and all the dishes were very pricey ($30 for quiche entrée!). I had the chicken dish, it was not well seasoned, and the greens were very tough to chew. The desserts were very good."

  • "The menu (for lunch) is careful. Nothing stands out. This is not cutting edge cuisine but simple and well done. The only out on the limb item (which was great ) was the Bufalo gelato with Balsamic sauce. Service is very nice. Wine list is way over-priced. I live in the wine country and I was surprised at the prices for a glass…."

  • "I have luncheon meetings at this restaurant but but, since I live in San Francisco I, have not been there for dinner in a long time.. Our dinner party of 5, including friends from L.A., were wowed by the overall experience, the food, the service, the tasteful decor. I had pigeon -- the ;ast time was in Paris -- and it was cooked perfectly, juicy and tender with a lovely modest sauce. One guest had the vegetarian dish, not because she is a vegetarian, but because she was intrigued by ingredients. She loved it. Ditto with the balance of the food. At any rate, I will make more trips to Oliveto's. (Free parking too but ask where to go after making the reservation.)"

  • "Olivetto is an institution in Bay Area dining and delivers the best Northern Italian cuisine in the East Bay and equal to fine dining in Piemonte. Every dish is well thought out. There are two wine lists, one of local wines easy on the wallet and the other notable Italian wines they have cellared that are fit for that special occasion. They also have a moderate charge for corkage in you happen to have a cellar treasure of your own. Service is impeccable and the upstairs room is quiet despite the rapid transit rails right across the street Parking in the evening is a snap as the rapid transit parking lot is also across the street and free in the evening."

  • "Celebrated a friend's birthday. Decided to dine upstairs for a more quiet environment (as opposed to cafe downstairs which gets very noisy!) the arugala salad was excellent! Crisp, fresh and not over dressed and dressing was very light and flavorful! I had the farroto which was farro based dish with cream, parm and lots of mushrooms. A little more full then risotto and very very flavorful. My fri d had the fish. Portion size was nice but flavor was just ok. Nothing special. We passed on dessert. Servce was very nice! Attentive without being intrusive!"

  • "We have eaten many times at Oliveto and have always enjoyed it. However last Tuesday we took a party of 6 there to celebrate my son's birthday and the meal was a total disaster. Service was slow and disjointed. The appetizer arrived with our first courses. The puttanesca was inedible and was still inedible when it came back a second time. The desserts were delivered in shifts instead of all at once. The coffee was lukewarm. The busboy mixed up the orders several times. Very disappointing meal."

  • "Though the menu is creative and well executed, the waitstaff made us feel hurried. And each recommendation was an up-sell: The menu has 3 sections - appetizers, pastas, & mains. Our waitstaff presumed we'd each make a selection from each section - a huge amount of food. By the time mains arrived, some went straight to take-home bags. Example 2 - when our $52 bottle of wine was empty, we were asked if we'd like another one of the same or "perhaps another that's perfect for your meal" - it turned out to be $72. Thank god I asked for the wine list first. Though the evening was fine, we spent more than anticipated and fought at every turn to avoid spending even more. This isn't the experience one wants at a fine dining establishment."

Don't know what has happened here; our server was great and friendly, but really, three of us ordered ribeyes and no one finished them? the first course, one of the house specialties wasn't finished, the pasta course was great and and I almost forgot over $330 for four people with just two drinks?"

  • "Have eaten here several times since moving to Oakland 4 months ago. It was recommended as one of the better restaurants in the Bay area and it has lived up to expectations. The food is consistently excellent with a great variety and good seasonings. Service is first class -- friendly, efficient and always professional. No specific recommendations on what to get, as we always try something different and we are never disappointed. The wine list is heavy toward Italian wines of quality. On the other side, having owned restaurants in Sacramento, we have quite a wine cellar at home, so I usually bring one of my bottles -- their corkage charge is very reasonable."

  • "I picked this Rock Ridge restaurant based on overall Yelp reviews of 4.5 stars. Thinking it must be okay to average out to 4.5 stars. I used to live in Berkeley for about 12 years, so was fairly familiar with the restaurants in Rock Ridge from the old days. Since I haven't lived in this area for over 20 years, I am pleasantly surprised to find a vibrant food scene with lots of choice. Oliveto certainly delivers with nice offerings of Italian with a California twist. I suppose restaurants in the Berkeley/Oakland area have to elevate their standards due to the close proximity of Chaz Panisse. Overall, the food and wine pairing made the meal a fantastic dining experience. I would definitely go back over and over again."

  • "We've dined at Oliveto's over the years, at times leaving disappointed. Last night was a refreshing experience giving insight to what Oliveto can be. We dined later than usual and midweek, and the ambience in the elegant dimly lit room was warm with happy diners and relaxed servers-- pleasant, efficient and attentive without being overbearing. Our food-- creative,beautiful, simple and delicious, evidence that the kitchen was not rushed allowing chefs to do their best work. Last night's experience far excelled the previous one. Perhaps choosing to eat later (8 pm) and not on a weekend was the key---everything was stellar--service, food and ambience. I reserve the 5th star for that next visit for consistency. So glad we went!!"

  • "That's what we say in my country when dishes are on the salty side - the garden lettuce came w a lot of unsolicited "love". The entrees were also on the savory side. I had the cod and it was cooked to perfection, also enjoyed the puree of turnips. The Roero Arneis made a great companion. Out waiter was very patient with us - the four of us took a while to choose - two didn't eat spicy, so cauliflower w chili flakes was out, and they had no non-spicy option - a surprise for an upscale place. Looks like the salty salad had also been sitting in its vinaigrette. For dessert we shared a burrata ice-cream. Very disappointing, plain bland. All in all, we had a quiet lunch, but the food was not up to our expectations this time."

  • "UGH! Had such high hopes for this place. I went on Valentine's with my date we were both sorely disappointed. Our waiter never once refilled our glasses form the bottle of wine we purchased for our table. We had to ask a bus boy for more water as we had run out. I cannot even recall if we were asked how everything was. The dishes were over salted and the portions were unsatisfying. Fortunately we had bread at the start to fill us up, because after the "four course" meal AND dessert, we went elsewhere to get our fill."

  • "Wellington was dry meat with chewy pastry. Duck was boring. Cod was just fishy tasting. Veggies were all boring. Liver pate tasted like cat food. Salads were adequate. Overly expensive for the food served. Like most restaurants, they allow workers who feel the pressure to clear and set tables to overly rush around your table and dive into the cutlery container (if you sit there you will know what i mean). 3rd time eating there. Each time made excuses for their food but this time was one time too many."

  • "Three of us had lunch at Oliveto. One has dined there before. Our order was simple -- 2 rissotos and 1chicken. The waiter repeated it, correctly. We had our salad. When he brought the entrees he had 1 rissoto and 2 chickens. He proposed splitting the first rissoto and ordering another. We did. It finally came but we were now ready to leave, not quite full enough but not needing to start all over. No one was on a position to take home the leftovers. No adjustment to the bill for his mistake. We didn't ask. It would have been a nice touch and we would have tipped generously. But he did not and neither did we. Our friend said it was the second time it had happened to her at this restaurant. That's a problem. Food was delicious."

If you don't appreciate what a magical animal a pig is, you will have a newfound appreciation for them after just one Whole Hog Dinner.   • "WholeHog dining was disappointing.We sat in a section of our preference for the service person, who although she tried very graciously and professionally, could not have possibly recovered two terrible problems in the course of the meal.We waited at least half an hour for cocktails, as the bartender attended to and chatted with diners at the bar instead of mixing cocktails.The first course, very favorful, delicious sausages arrived before the cocktails. The second course, porcine gnocchi and lasagna, was also epicurean.Then the VERY pink pork loin arrived, very unappetizing huge slabs of bacon-appearing loin with enormous rinds, the small amount of meat too undercooked to cut with a meat knife, despite having asked for medium doneness."
