Diner Reviews
  • "It has been awhile since we last ate here. We invited friends from out of the country as we had really enjoyed the food and service each time we had eaten here in the past. We were extremely disappointed in the food and service. The server seemed annoyed by our requests. The food was not remarkable. All in all it was a very expensive evening disappointing evening."

  • "Food was small portions and we left hungry despite having two appetizers and sides. The server was totally disinterested in her job and our table. The food itself wasn't great. The music was loud club music at 5 pm. Not somewhere I'd ever go again. "

  • "Todd English's Olives used to be a great place. Now, it's just tired. I had a sorry excuse for a salmon fillet (they did manage to serve it very rare as I requested) with shrimp scampi (one shrimp, one). The garlicky spinach was maybe three tablespoons of spinach and a lot of cream and garlic and a full shaker of salt. My friend had the crazy mushroom flatbread, which he said tasted more like cardboard. The whole experience needs to be redone with imagination and freshness."

  • "This was one of the more expensive and disappointing meals I have had in Manhattan in a while. My husband and I shared the roasted chicken dish with "risotto" that was priced at $30. I was already skeptical about the price, and then truly disappointed when the plate showed up with two small pieces of chicken and something more like Israeli couscous served in a hollow, nearly-raw onion. The kale salad was nothing special, and the cheapest glass of white wine was $13. I don't usually write reviews, but we were so disappointed I could not resist in this case."

  • "I have always loved Todd English restaurants, including Olives. So I was eager to try the new incarnation The food was good top-to-bottom, though the entree choices were limited (5). But the newly-designed room is not good. There is no divider between the bar, the dining room and the kitchen, creating a very noisy, chaotic environment We ordered a decent wine at a typical NY price ($180), and asked that it be decanted. They had no decanter. Absurd. I probably won't go back. Too bad. The good was good."

  • "Whenever we stay at the W, my husband and I have dinner at Olives, which has always served beautifully prepared food. We stayed over on 4/9, and had a wonderful meal-my husband had the whole roasted bronzino( and it was just the right size for one person), and I had a seasonal Spring pasta dish, light and delicate, along with a crisp bottle of white wine. Our server was polite and attentive, and we greatly enjoyed our meal. The bar scene was very lively, and the noise level was a bit high, but everyone was having a great time. And so did we!"

  • "Stayed at the W Union Square for a bachelorette party. Had a hard time making reservations for 10. You have to call since it is over 8 but I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone. I tried email and the hostess got right back to me. The food was great! Service was great. I would love to try dinner!"

  • "I was thrilled to find out Olives was in my hotel in NYC...i am a huge Todd English fan. service at this restaurant was incredibly slow.......every aspect of the night from drink orders, to meal, to desert was slow......and each time we had to flag down a waiter. The worse part of the evening was that I ordered the sage and butternut pasta but was brought a sausage pasta.....something that I did not discover until I bit into the pasta. As a vegetarian that was a little off-putting. It took quite a few minutes to flag down a waiter and when i did there was no apology, he simply turned around a brought a half order of the correct dish (even though we ordered a full order). I won't return to this location unless service improves."

  • "Olive's is perfectly located in Union Square. There's parking just around the corner. Lovely area to walk around and shop. Food was delicious. Portions were perfect-not too big, not too small. Staff is very friendly and attentive. I would recommend the Tuna Tartare and Lobstertini as well as one of the Flatbread entrees. The wine we picked wasn't in stock but their suggested replacement was excellent."

  • "Love this Mediterranean gem with excellent flatbreads, friendly service, hopping bar and lounge scene, and warm, inviting ambience!"

  • "This is a very attractive restaurant with problems that relate mostly to food and presentation. Had a lettuce wedge that was great but it was served on an oddly shaped plate that was unstable making it impossible to cut the lettuce wedge without disbursing the food all over the place. My main course was a lamb shank that was also served on another annoying plate that was made for presentation purposes not for eating. The shank as served was buried in the mashed potatoes so that every time I tried to cut off a piece, the shank went sliding all over the plate. To add insult to injury, the lamb was tough and had an odd flavor. I gave up after a fews bites. This place prepares food to be photographed, not eaten. We won't be back."

  • "Have been going to Olives for many years and have never been disappointed. This atime after a period of about 2 years went back. Place has changed, more vibrant bar scene, food was very good..however considering th eplace wasnt full our service was very slow and lacked enthusiasm. Overall good experience"

  • "Tasty, good and very large portions. Party like atmosphere. Squid & octupus, crab cakes, rabbit and truffle fries are very good."

  • "Olives is consistently good and remains a great place for lunch or dinner. I really enjoy the cleaner aesthetic to the diningroom after its recently remodel. It opens up the space and allows light to enter the room from the many large windows that overlook 17th Street. Keep up the good work!"

  • "Have returned 3 times. The flatbread is delicious, the steak fabulous. The ambience is great too, apart from the strange seating at the entrance it doesn't feel like a hotel restaurant."

  • "We had an early dinner before a show. The server was attentive and we were able to dine leisurely but still get to our show on time. I appreciate when you can get a good wine by the glass and do not have to buy a bottle. The rabbit pasta was outstanding. The kale salad was good but needed more flavor. Great ambience. Great location."

  • "The food was amazing! Everything we ate was perfectly prepared, delicious, and very imaginative. We are mostly vegetarians and found an amazing feast among side dishes and salads. The beet ravioli beyond compare, Brussels's sprouts, sweet potatoes dish, kale salad, and flat breads all things we are still dreaming about. (but vegetarians need to modify and take out ham and bacon!) One meat eater at our table got the steak which she said was perfect. And the rosemary french fries were awesome. A real celebration in flavor, texture, and color."

  • "food was bland, from the appy of tuna to the flatbread of greek items that was extremely sour"

  • "I always walked by this place and didn't think much of it than a overly crowded hotel bar but I am really quite surprised when I tried the food there for restaurant week when a friend suggested we go there. I thought it was going to be bar food primarily but the short rib gnocci was absolutely delicious. It was hard to get service though, very busy place, often times we had to flag down other waiters."

  • "Altough we were on time for our reservation (on a Tuesday) and a couple of tables clearly free, we had to wait to get seated because the waitress had to leave for something else before she came back and could take care of us. The service unfortunately didn't get better. Wait times where long for. The food was cold when it got served (I ordered a Salon dish). It's really not worth the money."

  • "The food at Olives was perfect and amazing...every bite was special."

  • "The food overall was good, I don't have any complaints about that. However, what bothered me was that an hour dinner turned into a two hour dinner, mainly because we waited for 40 minutes for our entree to came out. Yes, you did not read that incorrectly, FORTY minutes. What bothered me even more was to see other tables, who were seated AFTER us get their entree BEFORE we did.. AND OH, THEY ORDERED THE SAME THING."

  • "Went during Restaurant Week. While food was fine, noise level was horrendous."

  • "Horrible! Very disappointing dining experience. Extremely impersonal service. Margaret the hostess was nice, Darwin(?) the busboy/runner was polite and accomodating, the waitress was TERRIBLE. She did not pay any attention to me whatsoever, she did not engage me in any conversation, she behaved like I was a nuisance to her, very unfriendly, with a severe face. Useless! The restaurant is hugely overpriced and not worth the money. $6 for an expresso? Please!"

  • "The entrees were delicious and the atmosphere was beautiful and romantic. However, the best part of my experience at Olives was the service. My friend and I added the wine pairing and had never tried the wines on the menu. The waiter recommended wine to go with our meals and was extremely attentive to our table as well as the tables around us (even as the restaurant headed into the dinner rush)."

  • "I have to admit that I set the bar pretty high for Todd English because I am such a fan of his other restaurants and his cookbooks. Everything about my experience at Olives was good to very good, but nothing about it was outstanding."

  • "coffe was cold,, eggs were not hot...a little burnt too...three entrees came out at once ; the fourth took five min more"

  • "We opted for the restaurant week special menu and we were not disappointed. The 72-hour pork belly appetizer was unparalleled! Our friend chose the regular menu and the bass she was served was large enough for a small army, and perfectly cooked. I've walked by this trendy W-Hotel restaurant for years and always wanted to try it. With the restaurant week special menu and a good excuse (19th anniversary vacation) we felt lucky to have the opportunity, without breaking the bank. They didn't balk that we ordered the "cheaper" meal—we were treated like special guests and had a brilliant experience. Can't wait to do it again!"

  • "I celebrated my birthday dinner here w/ lifelong friends. The restaurant was recommended to me & it was a HUGE disappointment. The service was horrific, the food was terrible. My gnoochi dish had sauce that tasted worse than any jarred stewed tomatoes I've eaten. No one ever asked if we'd like water or another round of drinks. Main entrees took almost 2 hours & it wasn't even busy. Sorry but have NOTHING good say. Find another restaurant!"

  • "The food was edible, but erred on the salty side. The service was lackluster a little on the cold side. Our waitress didn't seem very attentive and she didn't really check on us in a way that made us feel special. Overall it was ok, not fantastic."

  • "My girlfriend and I stayed at the W new york hotel and for dinner we had dinner at Olives. We had a very nice time. The food was great. The large portion menu wasn't exactly large but the food was excellent. We will definitely come back."

  • "Good drinks. Great atmosphere. Decent service. Stick with the pasta dishes and deserts. Two people with me got the ravoli dishes and they were great! DO NOT get the steak! Cheap and fatty. It was $43 and was worse than all $20 or less steaks I've gotten at places like Ponderosa or Applebees!!"

  • "We had such a great service experience. Solomon our server was the best. We were able to leave during our chef tasting meal and watch our show and return after to complete the desert portion of the meal. He took it upon himself to make it the best dining experience possible for us. Bravo!"

  • "Went to Olives for a late meal for six. Our booth was ready and waiting for us upon arrival. The room is well decorated, our booth was comfortable, and the noise level was quite moderate. Food? I would recommend the snacks, tapas, appetizers, or whatever they are called. These were all quite lovely, and carried us through drinks and conversation admirably. Main dishes were less inspired, and relied heavily upon the typical tricks of the trade; salt, butter and strong aromatics. Overall, it worked well for our purposes. I would definitely recommend drinks and snacks, dinner not so much..."

  • "My friend and I met for lunch at 1:00 p.m., the place was not busy, but it was difficult to get any service. We waited a long time to order. Then, they brought out the wrong pizza for my friend. Yikes."

  • "Olives was a very good brunch spot in Union Square. Inventive food with each dish having a slight twist. The service was positively fast by NY standards and the whole dining experience was very pleasant. The brunch was a good value relative to the price and the portion size was good. Enough to be full but not stuffed."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "Been dropping in here for years, although the menu feels much less inspired than when it first opened, they maintain good food and service. But the appetizers feel like they are from a lesser restaurant... Pass and hold out for the main courses sand dessert."

  • "Innovative, eclectic, what else can I say? It was a pleasure. The lobster tini appetizer was okay - the lobster was overcooked but the jalapeno stuffed fried olives were incredible. They should list them separately for purchase under the appetizer section. The yellowfin tatare was incredible, the sweet potato bravas were a great melding of flavors and the deviled eggs with black truffle (a special) were out of this world. Kale salad was unique and very tasty. We were so full after all the appetizers/salad that we never made it to entrees! We'll just have to go back!"

  • "Went to Olive's on a busy Saturday evening. 3 of us ordered the Olive's Mezze, 3 small plates & 2 salads, a side of carrots and a flatbread. Way too much food! The Mezze was great, as were the carrots and the cauliflower. The spicy shrimp were more fried dough than shrimp and our salads arrived about 30 minutes after we finished everything else. The fig/prosciuto flatbread was tasty but how can it be eaten "gracefully" when one cannot bite through the proscuito and it is layered on in long strips? The beet salad was way too salty. Ate a bite and left the rest. What was good was great but the shrimp, beet salad and the poorly thought out flatbread takes my rating from very good to good. On a nice note, the bill was only $115!"
