Diner Reviews
  • "The restaurant has incredible views. The service was a little hurried. The restaurant was very crowded - but they accept reservations which I highly recommend. They use text to let you know when your table is ready. Inside the restaurant was uncomfortably hot. We were jealous of the people enjoying the beautiful outdoor seating who were able to enjoy the breeze over the water. The food was pretty good, especially the specials like swordfish and tilapia which stood out above the low country boil and fried platters. They have an outdoor bar with juggling (and juggling lessons) which the children enjoyed while we waited until our reservation time. Live music as well with room for people to dance. Lively family friendly bar scene."

  • "Server was attentive and knowledgable. There is a great deck over looking the marsh...so lovely! After booking our reservation(party of 8) On open table, I called the restaurant and asked if we could have a window seat and they were very courteous and provided it! Perfect place for our family meal before departing hilton Head!"

  • "Visited here on Sat 7/5/14. We were late for our reservation and it was very busy, but the restaurant was still able to accommodate us. I had the clams appetizer and the spinach salad but too many mushrooms, but it was still good. I love clams so I've never had a bad clam in my life! Hubby had surf turf. He said his steak was good, not great but good. His scallops were really good. Our son had the pasta and shrimp. But those Hush puppies! OMG. Reminded me of how my grand mother used to make them. Excellent service. Overall a great restaurant to visit if you're in the Hilton Head area."

  • "Quite a few families with kids - especially at the early dinner hour. Not great for couples looking for a night out with some relative peace and quiet. The scallops were delicious, the hash brown-like potato coating on the grouper too heavy. Good local craft beer. Service was very good. Pricey given the lack of ambiance and hit and miss on food."

  • "My husband and I have been coming for long weekends at Hilton Head for years. Each time we come, we never skip Old Oyster Factory. Our favorite item on the menu is the Chilled seafood Platter. While it is an appetizer, it is huge and offers Lobster, shrimp, raw oysters, salmon, crab legs and clams, add 2 salads and their delicious hush puppies, you will have a meal fit for a king and queen..."

  • "We've been dining at the Old Oyster Factory for over 20 years. Each time the experience exceeds what we've come to expect. We try the traditional favorites like the gumbo and the crab cakes. We also try something new. For me it was the seafood medley. The waitstaff is always friendly and knowledgeable. Strongly recommend the restaurant but be sure to make a reservation!!"

  • "Despite the 4th July crowd they handled our party efficiently. Everyone had a good time and the food was great despite the huge volumes they had to handle. In recent months this restaurant has really lifted it's game and gone from a tired old tourist trap to a local favourite."

  • "We made a reservation for 4 for dinner at 6:15. We ended up waiting an additional 30 minutes because they were so busy. No problem though...there was live music outside and with that view I was happy to wait. When we were seated we sat very close to the entrance. We asked for another table (there was an empty on next to us) and was told that it was for a party of 6. However a few moments later they sat a family if 3 there. Since it was so busy people were standing over us and behind us as we ate. I complained, the people moved, only more people filed in and stood in the dining room less than a foot from our table. After complaining and still no results I was a little ticked. We spent @100.00 and I can't really say it was worth it."

  • "Although the food is exceptional and the views are a must-see, we were sat in a back room with a table of 10 loud children. We had two children with us that even commented on how loud the group beside us was. The experience totally ruined our dining experience. I highly recommend going there but suggest you ask for water views so you don't have the same experience."

  • "In town on vacation and was referred by a friend to try Oyster House. I never had oysters so I tried the Seafood Medley and did not enjoy it at all. I might try it again and order another dish, though."

  • "Built on an historic oyster canning site overlooking the beauty of the bay. Erin served us with A+ Service. Greeting with hush puppies set the mood in the Low Country. Clam chowder was excellent and fried fish platters were very good. Definitely a place to visit. Casual, yet warm environment."

  • "Meal was great and service was awesome. We had a large group which included 5 children and our server was very accommodating. We had shrimp appetizers, fish platter, scallops, and another fish dish. Also had children's meals which were great. Would definitely return- the only thing is that the kids didn't get their free t shirts and we didn't realize until the next day and we saw an add in paper. Overall, great restaurant and we will be back."

  • "Old Oyster Factory is a very popular place, so make reservations or expect a very long wait. Beautiful setting and spectacular views on main floor. On the pricey side for food that has a nice presentation, but average in taste. Surf and turf very good - large lobster and perfectly cooked tenderloin. Corn on the cob watery/overcooked. Seafood trio included medium shrimp that appeared to be steamed/boiled with a dab of bottled barbecue sauce. Family/Kid friendly but go early with reservation. Service is excellent. Once sun goes down, go on the beautiful deck for drinks and live music. Annual family tradition to go here for dinner."

  • "Our food was terrible. Scallops were over cooked and beer on the back deck was warm. This place would do better with a different kitchen staff."

  • "We had a fairly large group including 2 children . The restaurant is very kid friendly . The waitress was pleasant, but the food was slow in arriving . All of us were surprised at the quality of the food . The whole party had a fish dish of some type and each was prepared well . The only major complaint that we had was that the A/C wasn't working well . The waitress told us that this was how the A/C always worked . It had to be 76 to 78 degrees in our area of the restaurant . In any event, we enjoyed our evening and would recommend this restaurant for dinner ."

  • "We arrived on Sunday around 6:30. We were immediately seated on the deck and enjoyed live entertainment our entire meal. The food was very good..could not have been better. The service was good as well. We have eaten here whenever we are in Hilton Head on vacation. Great spot!!"

  • "Our table was ready for us at 8:00 even though we were there 10 min early which was nice. We were promptly greeted and seated, but waited for a while for our server to materialize. They were busy on a Sat evening but not CRAZY busy, and honestly we are not difficult folks to work with or please, but this was a less than stellar experience for a restaurant of this caliber. Our server wasn't on top of his game that evening, necessitating multiple requests for things (i.e., water, salad dressing for the salads, another glass of wine which never came, etc.) The salad dressings finally appeared simultaneously with the entrees which wasn't ideal, so timing as well as attentiveness was an issue. Food solid, service just disappointing..."

  • "The view was nice but... The Oyster Rockafellar was good but a couple were full of shells. One of the meals ~Catch of the Day came to the table raw. Another fish dinner was dry as a bone."

  • "Used the online reservations for 730, arrived at 720 and was not seated till 750, and then had made two trips to the hostess to check on what the problem was. Food was execellent, service from the waiter terrible. He made only two (2) appearances to check in us."

  • "Had reservations for dinner with great view. Seated early around 5pm and was looking forward to another great experience as I have eaten here several times before. Unfotunately, a very large group of approximately 18 people were seated very close and Parents put all kids (around 10 yound kids) at same table with no supervision. Entire group was unusually loud such that at least 2 other smaller groups asked to be reseated. Unfortunately, our worst experience at this usually great restaurant."

  • "First time at this very large restaurant in a scenic spot overlooking marshes. The food was OK except our main course was served before we even finished our appetizers -- we felt rushed. The vegetables were cold. When butter doesn't even melt on a baked potato, it's not good!! Nothing was really hot enough and again, we felt like they were just in a hurry to get us fed and gone. My husband's desert was ridiculously large -- good, but an excessive portion. We might go back for lunch or for drinks at sunset, but don't not sure about a dinner."

  • "I had the fried shrimp and a crab cake for dinner. Bost were good, not excellent. Too much filler in crabcake and way too little shrimp for here the restaurant is and they were probable 40-50 shrimp, certainly not 24-30 size!. For the small shrimp there should have been twice the amount for the price- but they made up for it with a LARGE portion of fries!- a filler to keep you from crying about the lack of shrimp!. The waiter was good, not great. He forgot the hushpuppies until he came back after we had eaten 1/2 our food. The hush puppies should come right away! Great view! Just seem to be slipping on the portions to make more money. I always make it a point to go at least once a year when my kids come down."

  • "We have been going to HHI for the past 3 years and have had the Old Oyster Factory on the list of restaurants to eat at. We finally got there this year and loved it. I had the roasted chicken as I don't care for seafood. It was delicious! My husband had swordfish and loved it. Definitely going back next year!"

  • "Got surf and turf. The speed at which our drinks, appetizers and entrees came was amazingly fast and GREAT. Server Michael was great and friendly. Really amazing experience. My food was not very good. Lobster was over cooked, tough and stringy. Strip steak was over cooked and for some ridiculous reason smothered in mushroom gravy. Why would ANYONE kill a great steak with gravy? I never ordered gravy. Amazing place but need to tighten up the food prep."

  • "Given the high tourist season in Hilton Head, we were very pleased that our reservation enable us to be seated promptly. Appetizers and salads were very good--the gumbo and lettuce wedge, notably. The entrees--all seafood for our group--were fresh and visually well presented, but lacked the sizzle and aroma that we have had at top seafood restaurants."

  • "Party of 9. Seated at a table for 6. Asked to move and was moved with no problem. Food portions were very small. I had a seafood platter where I could have three selections (fish, shrimp, and oysters). I had 6 shrimp on my platter (which was fine since since I had two other selections). My wife had the same platter but chose to have her three selections as all shrimp...she only received 12 shrimp. You would think there would be more shrimp for my wife's meal. Would also expect more seafood for the price. Other than that, everything was great. The waitress and the rest of the staff were amazing!"
