Diner Reviews
  • "We have dined at the Old Mill Room in the past and have never been disappointed. This time we were there for our 42nd anniversary and our dinners as usual were excellent. Our server, Douglas, exemplified the traits that all great servers must have, attentiveness, helpful with suggestions for wine and menu items, and most of all very friendly. I enjoyed the trout and my wife the crab cakes for our main course, and we also had the crab/cucumber appetizer, caesar salad, and the cold corn bisque soup, all of which were well prepared, tasty, and proportioned so that we were not over-sated by the time dinner arrived. Expect to pay a bit more, but the quality of food, service, and the period surroundings will make it worthwhile!!"

  • "This is not a cheap meal, but it's totally worth it for a special occasion. The tastes are carefully planned to go together, the food is very well cooked, in a word: delicious."

  • "Having enjoyed other dinners at the Old Mill Room, I don't remember ever experiencing such slow service (Saturday evening of restaurant week). Our waitress tried, but was slow getting back to us for anything, and the food took an extremely long time to come out. Food was good and is always consistent in that regard. But the overall experience was a bit disappointing due to long wait, noise level in room and frigid air conditioning (which was finally adjusted toward end of the evening)."

  • "Dinner superb, was restaurant week 3 course. Staff attentive, polite. Corn gazpacho the best. Party had salmon and steaks All perfect. Seafood bean side was a bit doughy. Cheesecake perfect."

  • "Four of us had a fabulous meal on Saturday night. Delicious food, beautifully presented by an excellent server (Douglas rocks!)."

  • "Since this was a Restaurant Week 3-course special, was surprised at quantity of food for each course. So good we will be back for regular menu."

  • "We stayed at and had dinner at the Boar's head Old Mill Room, their only formal dining room on the property. The service was excellent, and the food good. The hostess staff were awful and did not do a good job at all. They did not remember us or make an effort to address any of the requests we had for seating arrangements. We also ate breakfast there several times and enjoyed our meals. We recommend the Old Mill Room when in Charlottesville and looking for a nice, quaint, country inn feeling with good food and great service."

  • "I've been going to Boars Head and the Old Mill Room for over 30 years, so going now all these years later is like going home....it's comforting, the food is always delicious, the waitstaff is friendly and for me each time I go it brings back so many great memories. Whether you go for their amazing Sunday Brunch, delicious lunch buffet, or for a special dinner with family and friends you will always have a fantastic meal and feel as though you've "gone home" to that special place you've known all these years!"

  • "Don't understand about the extra county taxes they charge. Thank you UVA for charging the public more than business pays for food tax."
    Dined on 7/24/2014
  • "Although I wish we had a better view of the beautiful outdoors, the romantic setting was still very enjoyable. The wine list seemed endless, and the food would please any palette. Never had cold soup for an app before, but we were pleasantly surprised!"

  • "Wonderful food. Wonderful service. And the grounds are beautiful."

  • "Still one of the best in C'ville. Went to 3 restaurants for Restaurant Week and this was the best."

  • "Excellent food for restaurant week. Wine-pairing is good, as well. Great watermelon martini."
    Dined on 7/23/2014
  • "Great food, with really refined meals. Even with the restaurant week menu choices. Every part a delight. And the service was excellent. For example, because it took some time to chill the wine we ordered, the waiter gave us small amounts of another excellent wine to tide us over."

  • "The restaurant has such a great selection of food for lunch. Always something to look forward to especially the peanut soup and the bread pudding with sauce. It is a relaxing place where you can talk and have fabulous food."

  • "The ambience was quiet, with tasteful classical music in the background and views of the grounds and a pond. The service was exquisite, offered with sensitivity, warmth, and good timing. The food was attractively presented and well-prepared. We couldn't ask for more!"
    Dined on 7/21/2014
  • "While the ambiance is wonderful and the service was quite good, nothing compensates for the mediocre food. While the beauty and history of the restaurant is great, it certainly doesn't justify the high prices for so-so quality food. Will not go back. Sadly, a friend who suggested this resort for our stay commented, after our dinners (2 - Bistro and Old Mill Room) that the food quality had tanked after the UVA acquired the property."

  • "This was very disappointing - had chicken that barely tasted like anything in a lackadasical mushroom sauce, too salty corn bisque and too sweet creme brule. This was an anniversary dinner, and we were just very disappointed. We like the service and the room is very nice, but that doesn't make up for the food, at least on this occasion. Sorry to experience what seems like a decrease in quality. Also, if you have any mobility issues, this is a difficult place to go...the handicapped parking is too far from the restaurant, and the accessible bathrooms are on another floor."

  • "We ate at the Old Mill during Charlottesville restaurant week. Appetizers were interesting and delicious. Service was great. We will definitely will come back."

  • "The food was ok, not great. Some amuse bouche prior to the meal was overly oily and actually made me queasy. It's very "country club" but somehow lacked the charm or elegance that would make that palatable to anyone but a member of the club."

  • "Food and service was great. Very attentive and personable wait staff. Our second time there and it was even better than the first time."
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "Our server was professional and attentive and very accommodating. The food was less flavorful than expected. Seemed to be under-seasoned and less than memorable. It was not bad - in fact it was good - it just did not seem worthy of the reputation of the Boar's Head Inn. It also did not meet the expectation set by its price."

  • "We only dine at the Boar's Head for special occasions because it is very expensive. In fact, the $32 Sunday brunch was higher priced than the regular $20 lunch maybe because a glass of champagne as served with the meal and the buffet had eggs and roast beef on it. Since I do not drink alcohol the champagne meant nothing to me. The food was very good it but didn't warrant the high price. In fact, the peanut soup was the one item that my husband looks forward to having but it was missing off the buffet!! I would not recommend the Sunday brunch due to the cost. Eat lunch there on any day but Sunday. It will save you some $$! Lastly, what makes the place the most enjoyable is the wait staff. They are so pleasant, attentive and kind."

  • "The staff was very nice But it was rather a stiff atmosphere Requiring/preferring a jacket & tie ... No jeans.. There was no written dress code that we had seen. Made a reservation (staying at hotel) we came in jeans & then found out dress code.. But were told (by the front desk staff)they could make an acceptation because it was a Tuesday night..must have been shabby dresser night? Food was good /wine selection was good Probably won't go back unless a shabby dress night."

  • "We booked a table for 15. They sat 15 at a table that was better suited for 7. Everything on our table was so crowded you could barely pick up a glass without knocking over another. We had our entire meal at these very narrow tables while there was another table that was obvoiusly set for a group coming in later that was proper as the tables were twice as wide. I guess they were special and we were not. The wait staff was amazing. The food was fantastic with the one exception being that the filets were all over cooked. The waitress was great in trying to make up for it with new filets. However it took so long to get them that everyone else was finished eating by the time they arrived. For a meal that was $800 this was unacceptable."

  • "The visit to The Old Mill Room was from start to finish a wonderful experience. The service was excellent and the meal was a great finish to a wonderful day at The Boar's Head. The old hand hewn beams to the stone and wood of the room added a unique feel and look to our experience. The food selections were varied and very tempting. The waitperson was very knowledgeable of the menu and helped us with our choices. Our meals were delivered promptly and the presentation was beautiful. We enjoyed our fare and were discreetly waited on during the meal. Desserts were chosen and served after our three courses of main fare and enjoyed as our experience came to a close. This is a great place to dine and the service is tops..."

  • "My wife and I had dinner at the Old Mill Room. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary. The room and table settings are very elegant. The service from the time your arrive to the time you leave is superb. Our reservation was for 7:30 PM. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately upon our arrival. Lisa was our server and she did an extraordinary job. She was patience with our food order, provided very good food recommendations, and responded with each request promptly, always with a smile. The wine recommendations were most enjoyable. We had the scallop appetizer, one of the chilled soups, mill room salad, the trout dinner, and the lamb dinner. All were timely served. All were well done."

  • "We were not guests at the Boar's Head, but went to the Old MIll Room while in Charlottesville because of its excellent reviews. They were justified. Go if you want an old-fashioned, traditional setting with high-quality cooking and a nice wine list. Our field greens came bundled in a ribbon of cucumber, strawberries scattered over the plate and a dribble of balsamic dressing. The salmon's saltimbocco preparation showed that the prosciutto and sage treatment works beautifully with fish. The veal medallions were a might overcooked and the creme caramel was a tad skimpy, but I quibble; both were very enjoyable. Service was ultra-attentive and the meal was well paced. Well worth the price."

  • "Wonderful people. Beautiful place. Great service. Complimentary champagne for our anniversaries. Good accompanying food (salads, bread etc). Good wine. Main courses were mediocre at best. Halibut was bland. Lamb shank tasteless. Very disappointed as the food was very good the last time we were there."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "I had their filet which was cooked perfectly and had a great taste-truly exceeded my expectations. My wife had halibut likewise fresh and cooked perfectly and a generous serving. Only problem was the sauce with it was way too salty! Very skimpy on the accompanyments with the entrees for the price paid."

  • "Four friends who haven't seen each other for awhile, met at the Old Mill Room for a catch-up lunch -- it was an ideal place. Our server explained the lunch options, gave us adequate time to decide, took our orders and refilled our drink glasses. Our orders were served promptly and although he kept an eye on us he left us alone with our chit-chatting and laughing. He was attentive but not bothersome. Our lunch was outstanding, price was more than reasonable and four friends had a long leisurely lunch catching up. I rate that perfect."

  • "The Old Mill Room is a classic, formal style dining room - although they appear to have relaxed dress restrictions now. Service was attentive and prompt, though the dining room was not very busy. Crab appetizer was wonderful, Veal Medallions and Halibut were excellent."

  • "We had a great breakfast at the Old Mill Room (and a great dinner on the outdoor patio of the Bistro). Service was quick and there was enough ambient noise to keep us from feeling uncomfortable about taking our 20-month old out to eat. Drinks at dinner were great, too! We will definitely be back."
