  • "Service was impeccable. Menu offered varied choices with southern gourmet twists. Watermelon salad and dinner salad were very good. Final entree choice preparation just missed the mark, however. Trout served skin-side up with the sauce on top which made skin removal difficult. Pork tenderloin was merely ok in its presentation and flavor. Desserts had no chocolate offering."

  • "I stayed at the Boar's Head for a business meeting and wound up having dinner in the Old Mill Room that night. The three course menu was superb. The biggest challenge was picking from the enticing entree selection. The service was very attentive but not smothering. Eating alone that evening, the three courses, two glasses of wine, and a brandy after dinner came to $109. But it was definitely worth every penny."

  • "We've been to the Old Mill Room numerous times over the 19 years we've lived in the greater Charlottesville, VA area so we've had the opportunity to try a variety of menu options. The Lobster Bisque was phenomenal as usual. I decided to try the Anise "scented" scallops with toasted quinoa and basil-marinated grapefruit salad and lobster oil from the "beginnings" selections. "Scented" was not quite the word I would use as the anise was very heavy and overpowered my palate and everything else on the dish. My wife had the Herbed Pork Berkshire Tenderloin which was underdone in spots so we had to send it back to get it cooked more to her liking (since they did not ask beforehand). It was a good dinner but not necessarily great."

  • "The place is old school: heavy table settings, full staffing, trained servers and table bussing. And they do it very well. The menu is realistically small, allowing for the cooks to produce great quality. The salmon, pork and chicken were excellent. The food was not overtly salty but later that night I was very thirsty so hydrate before dining. The chicken was underdone at the thickest portion."

  • "We have dined at the Old Mill Room in the past and have never been disappointed. This time we were there for our 42nd anniversary and our dinners as usual were excellent. Our server, Douglas, exemplified the traits that all great servers must have, attentiveness, helpful with suggestions for wine and menu items, and most of all very friendly. I enjoyed the trout and my wife the crab cakes for our main course, and we also had the crab/cucumber appetizer, caesar salad, and the cold corn bisque soup, all of which were well prepared, tasty, and proportioned so that we were not over-sated by the time dinner arrived. Expect to pay a bit more, but the quality of food, service, and the period surroundings will make it worthwhile!!"

  • "Having enjoyed other dinners at the Old Mill Room, I don't remember ever experiencing such slow service (Saturday evening of restaurant week). Our waitress tried, but was slow getting back to us for anything, and the food took an extremely long time to come out. Food was good and is always consistent in that regard. But the overall experience was a bit disappointing due to long wait, noise level in room and frigid air conditioning (which was finally adjusted toward end of the evening)."

The hostess staff were awful and did not do a good job at all. They did not remember us or make an effort to address any of the requests we had for seating arrangements. We also ate breakfast there several times and enjoyed our meals. We recommend the Old Mill Room when in Charlottesville and looking for a nice, quaint, country inn feeling with good food and great service."

This was an anniversary dinner, and we were just very disappointed. We like the service and the room is very nice, but that doesn't make up for the food, at least on this occasion. Sorry to experience what seems like a decrease in quality. Also, if you have any mobility issues, this is a difficult place to go...the handicapped parking is too far from the restaurant, and the accessible bathrooms are on another floor."

In fact, the $32 Sunday brunch was higher priced than the regular $20 lunch maybe because a glass of champagne as served with the meal and the buffet had eggs and roast beef on it. Since I do not drink alcohol the champagne meant nothing to me. The food was very good it but didn't warrant the high price. In fact, the peanut soup was the one item that my husband looks forward to having but it was missing off the buffet!! I would not recommend the Sunday brunch due to the cost. Eat lunch there on any day but Sunday. It will save you some $$! Lastly, what makes the place the most enjoyable is the wait staff. They are so pleasant, attentive and kind."

  • "The staff was very nice But it was rather a stiff atmosphere Requiring/preferring a jacket & tie ... No jeans.. There was no written dress code that we had seen. Made a reservation (staying at hotel) we came in jeans & then found out dress code.. But were told (by the front desk staff)they could make an acceptation because it was a Tuesday night..must have been shabby dresser night? Food was good /wine selection was good Probably won't go back unless a shabby dress night."

  • "We booked a table for 15. They sat 15 at a table that was better suited for 7. Everything on our table was so crowded you could barely pick up a glass without knocking over another. We had our entire meal at these very narrow tables while there was another table that was obvoiusly set for a group coming in later that was proper as the tables were twice as wide. I guess they were special and we were not. The wait staff was amazing. The food was fantastic with the one exception being that the filets were all over cooked. The waitress was great in trying to make up for it with new filets. However it took so long to get them that everyone else was finished eating by the time they arrived. For a meal that was $800 this was unacceptable."
