Diner Reviews
  • "This is one of those restaurants that should be first on the list for very special occasions. It's not cheap, but then it's not unreasonable unless of course you order up a nice bottle of wine or drinks to go with and then you can expect to pay $100 person or more by the time your done. However the menu is filled with wonderfully prepared dishes and the service is just the best in Charlottesville. I had let the restaurant know that we were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and that I had proposed to my bride to be at the restaurant. Everyone knew our name and congratulated us on the happy event. That was most special and made me look like I had planned it all elaborately. Really excellent service and very good food."

  • "Way better than average brunch at historic location - Boars Head Inn. A wide variety of brunch items - many very unique. Food was fresh and plentiful. Save room for the incredible dessert station!"

  • "My wife and I honeymooned at the Boars Head in 1969. We returned numerous times over the years. My last visit to the Inn was Mar 28th of this year which would have been our 44th anniversary. My wife passed away on Sept 15, 2013 and returning on that date and remembering her was very comforting. I intend to return often."

  • "We had a lovely dinner at the Old Mill on a snowy day with a crackling fire in the fireplace. Service was excellent and the food was very good. We are there 4 times during our stay. Would go back again!"

  • "We arrived and were seated at a lovely table in front of the fireplace which was going and wood continued to be added all evening. We started out with lobster bisque that was delicious but could have used a little sherry. We also had the duck breast that was quite good. The breast was not rare but was not overcooked. My husband got the lamb shank that was cooked perfectly. It was very tender and fell off the bone and was not overpowered by a sauce. I ventured for the rockfish that was served with clam broth and onion over a chorizo potato cake served in a bowl. It was an unusual way of serving but was light and not overcooked. The service was warm and not too attentive. Overall it was a nice experience."

  • "I only had a short time for lunch as I was attending a conference at the Inn. I was able to order the buffet, eat and return to the conference in time. The food was good and the service was good. I wish I could have spent more time in the restaurant."

  • "We had lunch at the Inn and the place was crowded and busy. I would say that the food was average based on previous visits to the inn."

  • "We had breakfast at the Boar's Head Inn. Service was fast and attentive. Were seated at a table for two with a great view of the pond. Would recommend as a place to have breakfast in Charlottesville, VA."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at the Boar's head. The chefs special wine paired menu was excellent and we were taken by the exceptional service that evening. Granted being a Monday evening it wasn't that crowded but our waiter was very attentive and it was a perfect evening. The Inn like setting in front of the fireplace was the perfect for a lite snowy evening. We've been here for Sunday Brunches before, and have never been disappointed."

  • "The food was above average but not the best I've ever had. The ambiance was what we expected. It is a great place if you are looking for a formal dining option. Many times restaurants are drafty. However, the temperature inside the Old Mill Room was cozy even on a colder night. The service was good. We ordered the all inclusive dinner option which we believed included a four course meal paired with a selection of Virginia wines. However, when the waitress delivered the check we were charged $19.00 for two desserts."

  • "I'd previously dined at the Boars Head Inns Old Mill Room for a holiday luncheon in 2012. The buffet was amazing and I promised myself I'd return the following year. Unfortunately, I'd missed that chance but decided to treat myself to a pre birthday lunch with my daughter. The servers were prompt and friendly. The salad bar was fresh with a good selection of raw vegetables. The hot food was not hot, the chicken and sauce were room temperature at best. The mashed potatoes were delicious but only warm. The onion soup wasn't hot either. Compared to my first experience dining in the Old Mill Room this visit paled in comparison."

  • "Sunday brunch price has now exceeded what I am willing to pay. The Bloody Mary or Mimosa should be included in the cost to make the brunch more reasonably priced. Great waiter and lovely setting."

  • "Our evening was great! Our two waiters were so engaging and attentive. The food was wonderful. We were given a table by the fire as was requested. There was a birthday candle on my dessert and happy birthday written in chocolate on the plate. Nice! A truly lovely evening dining experience."

  • "The food was very good. The appetizer of scallops was done perfectly, but the lamb shank was possibly a tad overdone--very good, nevertheless. The wine list was extensive, but fairly pricey for our budget. We settled on a $65 bottle of pinot noir that we enjoyed very much. For breakfast, I had salmon and scrambled eggs. I don't order salmon often, so this was a stretch for me; however, the salmon was excellent and I was pleased with my choice."

  • "The historic old mill's exposed beams are beautifully preserved, there's a roaring fire, high ceilings, soft light, and comfortable space between tables. All of this makes the Old Mill Room a great place for that special night out...as long as you aren't taking a foodie. Not saying the food is bad, it simply isn't "special". After all, the Old Mill Room @ the Boar's Head Inn is just a college dining hall, right? (In case you aren't aware, the inn is owned by some part of UVA). Point being this, if the company is THE most important for visiting the Old Mill Room, it's a great choice. However, if it's about the food, there are better choices in C'ville."

  • "We decided to use a gift certificate, received at Christmas, for our Valentine's Day dinner at the Old Mill Room, and were not disappointed that we did so. The menu was prix fixe for the evening, and the selections for every course (four) made it very difficult to choose one from each course. Everything was delicious, as usual, and the service was outstanding. We look forward to our next meal at The Boar's Head Inn."

  • "My fiancé and I chose a new place to celebrate her birthday. We usually stick to a few places that are locally owned/managed. This restaurant was on par with other top locals. The restaurant menu for restaurant week was a great showcase for the exec/sous chefs talent and executed spot on by the culinary team. That being said, the service from Nancy was well over the top. At no point was birthday or celebration mentioned that could have made a difference in attitude. She juggled several tables I'm sure but she made us feel like we were her only table. I can't say enough good things about her! Only complaint.... UVA students being loud."

  • "I took my husband to the Old Mill Room at the Boar's Head Inn for his 40th birthday. From the time we arrived, I knew we were in for a treat. The hostess checked my coat and promptly seated us. Our server addressed us by name and saw to our every need from recommending a wine to ensuring each course was served promptly while giving us space to enjoy ourselves and each other. The food was perfectly cooked, including my husband's scallops which he ordered for the first course. Even in the finest of restaurants we've received slightly overcooked scallops, it's easy to do, but his scallops were perfectly seared and delectable. All of the seafood was delicious and dessert was heavenly! They even remembered to add a birthday message! Loved it!"

  • "Hadn't been to the Old Mill Room in years. Nice to see the food was still very well prepared; the ambiance is wonderful if you like the feel of a mountain lodge; its quiet compared to a lot of todays restaurants and the service was impeccable. Not to be missed."

  • "We joined friends here for lunch. We all enjoyed our meals. One of us had the buffet and liked it very well. I am not a big eater - usually - but managed to eat everything on my plate! While the room was large with lots of natural light, it was not loud. We were able to enjoy conversation with our friends without feeling that we were annoying those around us, not could we hear the conversations of others. I was really pleased with the service, which was attentive without being intrusive. This was our first time here in a number of years. We'll definitely be going back."
