Diner Reviews
  • "We only dine at the Boar's Head for special occasions because it is very expensive. In fact, the $32 Sunday brunch was higher priced than the regular $20 lunch maybe because a glass of champagne as served with the meal and the buffet had eggs and roast beef on it. Since I do not drink alcohol the champagne meant nothing to me. The food was very good it but didn't warrant the high price. In fact, the peanut soup was the one item that my husband looks forward to having but it was missing off the buffet!! I would not recommend the Sunday brunch due to the cost. Eat lunch there on any day but Sunday. It will save you some $$! Lastly, what makes the place the most enjoyable is the wait staff. They are so pleasant, attentive and kind."

  • "The staff was very nice But it was rather a stiff atmosphere Requiring/preferring a jacket & tie ... No jeans.. There was no written dress code that we had seen. Made a reservation (staying at hotel) we came in jeans & then found out dress code.. But were told (by the front desk staff)they could make an acceptation because it was a Tuesday night..must have been shabby dresser night? Food was good /wine selection was good Probably won't go back unless a shabby dress night."

  • "We booked a table for 15. They sat 15 at a table that was better suited for 7. Everything on our table was so crowded you could barely pick up a glass without knocking over another. We had our entire meal at these very narrow tables while there was another table that was obvoiusly set for a group coming in later that was proper as the tables were twice as wide. I guess they were special and we were not. The wait staff was amazing. The food was fantastic with the one exception being that the filets were all over cooked. The waitress was great in trying to make up for it with new filets. However it took so long to get them that everyone else was finished eating by the time they arrived. For a meal that was $800 this was unacceptable."

  • "The visit to The Old Mill Room was from start to finish a wonderful experience. The service was excellent and the meal was a great finish to a wonderful day at The Boar's Head. The old hand hewn beams to the stone and wood of the room added a unique feel and look to our experience. The food selections were varied and very tempting. The waitperson was very knowledgeable of the menu and helped us with our choices. Our meals were delivered promptly and the presentation was beautiful. We enjoyed our fare and were discreetly waited on during the meal. Desserts were chosen and served after our three courses of main fare and enjoyed as our experience came to a close. This is a great place to dine and the service is tops..."

  • "My wife and I had dinner at the Old Mill Room. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary. The room and table settings are very elegant. The service from the time your arrive to the time you leave is superb. Our reservation was for 7:30 PM. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately upon our arrival. Lisa was our server and she did an extraordinary job. She was patience with our food order, provided very good food recommendations, and responded with each request promptly, always with a smile. The wine recommendations were most enjoyable. We had the scallop appetizer, one of the chilled soups, mill room salad, the trout dinner, and the lamb dinner. All were timely served. All were well done."

  • "We were not guests at the Boar's Head, but went to the Old MIll Room while in Charlottesville because of its excellent reviews. They were justified. Go if you want an old-fashioned, traditional setting with high-quality cooking and a nice wine list. Our field greens came bundled in a ribbon of cucumber, strawberries scattered over the plate and a dribble of balsamic dressing. The salmon's saltimbocco preparation showed that the prosciutto and sage treatment works beautifully with fish. The veal medallions were a might overcooked and the creme caramel was a tad skimpy, but I quibble; both were very enjoyable. Service was ultra-attentive and the meal was well paced. Well worth the price."

  • "I had their filet which was cooked perfectly and had a great taste-truly exceeded my expectations. My wife had halibut likewise fresh and cooked perfectly and a generous serving. Only problem was the sauce with it was way too salty! Very skimpy on the accompanyments with the entrees for the price paid."

  • "Wonderful people. Beautiful place. Great service. Complimentary champagne for our anniversaries. Good accompanying food (salads, bread etc). Good wine. Main courses were mediocre at best. Halibut was bland. Lamb shank tasteless. Very disappointed as the food was very good the last time we were there."

  • "Four friends who haven't seen each other for awhile, met at the Old Mill Room for a catch-up lunch -- it was an ideal place. Our server explained the lunch options, gave us adequate time to decide, took our orders and refilled our drink glasses. Our orders were served promptly and although he kept an eye on us he left us alone with our chit-chatting and laughing. He was attentive but not bothersome. Our lunch was outstanding, price was more than reasonable and four friends had a long leisurely lunch catching up. I rate that perfect."

  • "The Old Mill Room is a classic, formal style dining room - although they appear to have relaxed dress restrictions now. Service was attentive and prompt, though the dining room was not very busy. Crab appetizer was wonderful, Veal Medallions and Halibut were excellent."

  • "We had a great breakfast at the Old Mill Room (and a great dinner on the outdoor patio of the Bistro). Service was quick and there was enough ambient noise to keep us from feeling uncomfortable about taking our 20-month old out to eat. Drinks at dinner were great, too! We will definitely be back."

  • "We went as a group with 5 people to the Boar's Head. It has great ambiance and matches with excellent food. I would certainly go back and that was the consensus of the other diners as well. Excellent experience with the quality of the food, portion size and variety."

  • "My mother and I really enjoyed the lunch buffet....excellent variety and quality of dishes including smoked salmon, curried chicken salad, delicious corn chowder, and yummy dessert choices (bread pudding, creme brulee and apple/blueberry cobbler). My mother got the buffet that included warm dishes and she raved about the beef tenderloin with mushrooms. Reasonably priced for what you get. "

The service was attentive considering it was UVAs Graduation weekend. The setting is gorgeous and the decor appealing. Would highly recommend it for a special occasion."

  • "Splendid afternoon, marvelous brunch, scrumptious buffet -reasonably price; dining room with a scenic view of gorgeous grounds and a perfect romantic date night place to be. YES! Boards Head Inn is a notable place to enjoy inside, then take a coffee outside on the deck. "

  • "I have frequent this restaurant many times with clients and always had a pleasant experience. When planning our recent girls outing I knew this restaurant would be our first stop. The other ladies had never visited The Boar's Head Inn and were very excited to try something new.We made our reservation through open table and it went very smoothly.Upon arrival however, there were several hostesses at the desk and no one spoke, I had to tell them we had a reservation and our name, still not a word, the hostess walked us to the table gave us a menu and walked away. The whole time the atmosphere felt very tensed. Our group decided on the buffet, everything was delicious with the exception of the hair cooked into my meat, the manager apologized."

  • "I frequently take groups from work to the Old Mill Room for the buffet lunch -- it's a wonderful favorite, and this time was no exception. Only downside was that the proteins in the hot line of the buffet weren't quite as good as they usually are. Overall, though, everything was great."

  • "We enjoyed several restaurants in the Shenandoah Valley including the Old Mill Room. Very nice ambience. Excellent service. A great place for conferences and/or reunions. The menu is somewhat limited, but the food is prepared well. Great attention to detail and service. "

  • "From the initial greeting by our server Nancy, to dessert, we were pleased. Delicious local fare and plate presentations impressive. Coconut pineapple dessert! My creme brulee' was served with a box of tissues. Our daughter had called the restaurant earlier because she wanted to give us dessert for our 26th anniversary. Sweet surprise for a delightful evening!"

  • "Having dined at Boar's head in the past, we were quite disappointed with the cuisine. I would say it was bland to not good. Halibut was dry and "fishy". Key lime cheesecake was reminiscent of Sarah Lee. The $350+ for two Bill was certainly not reflected in the uniqueness or quality of the food. Also, our server was exceptionally chatty. "

  • "The Sunday brunch is delicious, and after such a great experience we decided to try dinner at the Old Mill Room. Unfortunately the food was average at best, and very overpriced for food that is just "okay." Stick with brunch, skip the dinner. "

  • "I wanted to give my 11 year old granddaughter a special experience for her birthday. She was pleased and that's what's importance. For me the pan seared halibut was soft and white. I expected some carmelization or crispness on the outside. Instead it seemed steamed. Also when I asked for a non-wheat alternative to the wheat flour bread, they had none--not even a rice cracker. The wine by the glass choices at $10-12.00 each were pedestrian choices that Applebees would have. When the bill is over $125.00 for 2 people, I thought it would be more special. Alice D."

  • "Very good food and service. I'll return when I'm back in town. Only drawback was a table of ladies shrieking and guffawing so loudly and for so long that they really marred the atmosphere."
