Diner Reviews
  • "After two send backs for proper cooking temperature you would think it would be done correctly. Sadly, no. "

  • "When Looking for Old Homestead, just look for a giant cow above the restaurant. Staff is very pleasant. The decor is old fashioned but in good shape. There is dim lighting but bright enough to see your fellow diners and others in the restaurant. Our waiter made suggestions when we were unsure of what to get for an appetizer and when deciding between which cut of beef to get. He also suggested a wine for me, which I really liked! My husband loved his food and ate more than usual. I needed to add some salt and pepper but the food was good. Expect to pay a pretty penny (close to $200 for 2, depending on what you get). I might give it another try one day, but for now, it's an experience I can mark off my list."

  • "Shout outs to Manny, he was friendly and very welcoming. Answered all our questions and recommended delicious food. We will be back ; )"

  • "I would recommend sharing an appetiser as we had one each and they are huge. My husband had the calamari and tempura shrimps and I had the crab cake. All of it was cooked to perfection and full of flavour. For our entrees my husband had a 16oz burger and I had the chicken breast. We had truffle mac and cheese, hash brown and sautéed spinach as sides. The hash brown was the biggest I have ever seen, we thought they were bringing us a whole pie. The mac and cheese was perfect. Although we just couldn't finish the meal, the portions here are generous to say the least. The whole meal came to just over $200, this is a lot for us to spend on one meal especially as we didn't fit in desert but the food was amazing so have no complaints."

  • "What was once a decadent experience has now become eroded with tourists and loud obnoxious millennialls. No longer is this venue one of class. Now they shove you in your table make you wait for portions that have been trimmed down and over priced. Plenty of better alternatives than here."

  • "Really good. Better than most other iconic NYC steak houses I've tried--Spark's, Wolfgang's etc. Service is very good even when very busy."

  • "Wanted to try Old Homestead, boy what a letdown. To begin, the porterhouse for two is not a porterhouse, it's a strip on the bone. The filet was missing. $98 for a strip and a bone go figure. A couple of my fiends ordered the rib steak. Figured it would by flavorable since it contains a bit more fat than the "porterhouse/strip on a bone". It lacked any flavor, a little salt and pepper will go a long way. The good things about Old Homedtead are the sides. Great tots and truffel mac and cheese. Will not go back unless somebodyelse is paying for it."

  • "My husband and my birthday is a day apart. We try to do something special for two days. He wanted to eat a steak at the Old Homestead (since we don't eat red meat much anymore). The servers were impeccable. Iris was sweet and so attentive as well as our main Server, Henry. He was easy to talk to; he made wonderful suggestions. The host, Dino sat with us and asked about our plans to celebrate our birthdays and the meal was superb. My Gothic Rib Steak was the best that I've ever eaten and my husband's Texas T-Bone was juicy and tasty. It was appropriate since my husband is a native Texan. We enjoyed our cocktails and of course, they were kind to bring a generous slice of the five layer chocolate cake and sang Happy Birthday. A great evening."

  • "Wow what a great place for meat! If you are a steak lover, you will love this place. A bit on the pricey side but well worth it."

  • "we have gone to the homestead a number of times and the establishment has always been outstanding not only for their food but the old rustic ambiance and service. as far as steak houses are concerned, i rate this at the top. can't wait to return, after we lose the three pounds we gained from all the food they give you."

  • "It took a while for me to get over the hostess wanting to sit us upstairs in the completely empty dining room while the downstairs dining room still had plenty of open tables. The servers are curt and professional, I guess--also just this side of rude. The food, however, is good. The tater tots are delicious--addictively so. The steaks were good, but again, not exceptional. The room is old NYC nostalgic with red leather chairs and banquets and soft lighting, so that's fun."

  • "Had the bone in filet and was simply amazing. The chopped salad and sides were also strong. Old School steak house and it was great!"

  • "STEAKMMMMMMYUMMMMMMMMEATYBEATYBIGANDBOUNCESTEAK!!! You come here for steak, eat steak, leave happy and full of STEAK!!! You will pay about $50 for your STEAK in a choice of several different cuts. We had the rib-eye at the waiter's suggestion it was soft and wonderful and meaty and more than enough to share. We also had the Chilean sea bass, which was a nice piece of fish in a broth, fine as the Other Thing on the Table. Sea scallop appetizer consisted of 2 scallops for $15, slight chemically taste that they sometimes have though saved by being wrapped in bacon, which provided nice texture. Creamed spinach wa off the charts. Bring a wine chart, there are some bargains among younger vintages that are ready to drink. With 2 cocktails: $295."

  • "The food is always great, particularly the seafood appetizers. The clams were large and tasty as were the oysters. And the crab meat cocktail is the best we've ever had. The bacon wrapped filet with diver scallops was excellent. More flavorful than many other filets I've had and the scallops with large and perfectly cooked. Service was very good and the atmosphere fine."

  • "Food was very good; Meatpacking District is a cool area down in Chelsea so the location is great; Service was ok as our server was Russian and was very difficult to understand over the noise. Speaking of the noise, don't waste your time if you are looking for a quiet out of the way spot for a romantic very expensive meal. This place would drown out the engine on a 747!! Ridiculously loud!"

  • "We booked a table for 8pm on Saturday night and had to wait 20 mins to be seated at our table, but the food definitely made up for this! Best calamari we ever had. Best steak we ever had. Would definitely recommend!"

  • "In the restaurant business it's been said that if the atmosphere and the service is great, yet the food is just ok - a guest will return… I will only return to this place because the food is great.. I have been a customer for the past 10 years because of the high food quality only… The service was bad from the hostess calling us for our table at 9:45pm with a 8:30pm reservation - to finish with having to literally get up to get the check from the server… It's all about the food!"

  • "Brought my parents and family for my father's birthday and enjoyed every minute. Our waiter was excellent. I've had good service there before, but he was amazingly friendly and really made my parents enjoy the evening even more. The only downside was that we were on the third floor and it was so loud that we had a hard time hearing each other."

  • "Steaks and food in General was very good. They clearly have a routine for getting people served in a fast and efficient manner - we were in and out in an hour - even though I'd rather have spent a little longer."

  • "We frequent the Old Homeatead in AC and decided to try their flagship in NYC. The meal and service were outstanding. A must for steak lovers is the Ribeye. Also try the chilled shrimp appitizer; the largest and best shrimp you have ever eaten. The rolls are a little different from their AC counterpart as they are baked in the city and are excellent. NY Cheesecake is a must! Staff was awesome (Roma and Jose) and very attentive!"

  • "Everyone's steak was cooked perfectly, moist and tender. The string beans were wonderful. The youngest diner enjoyed his burger and said the onion rings were the best ever!"

  • "We were here a few years and loved it so we could not wait to get back..well it definitely was not worth the wait! With reservations we still had to wait almost an hour to get a table!!! The 'lobby' where we had to stand and wait for the table was extremely busy so much so you couldn't even stand still with people pushing past you. When we got our food it was nice but definitely not worth the money - too salty!! The noise was awful..maybe this place would be good for a party but not for a date with your partner. If you wish for a more intimate atmosphere go to the capital grille!!"

  • "This last experience, sealed this places fate for me n my hubby. Res for 8:30 ran over an hr plus over, while we had to shuffle from bar area, to waiters station, to bar back station, all the while the panicky waiters tried maneuvering their food laden trays between the sardin packed bar/Finally sat down, after we harassesd the hostess a few times. Restaurant is noisy, and gives off an unclean appearance overall. No care is given to presenting a prety table setting. No table cloth candle, or flower in sight. Food :- fast food quality appetizers. Finally , the steak! Never ever had I received a rib eye that as u cut into, never has a drop of oily fat drip into plate. The meat was DRY, tasteless, disappointingand said not to bother. Wasted $$"

  • "expensive but good--I have been a patron there for over years, and 5 years ago, I thought it got too chi-chi---now it is back to steaks and handsome sized drinks."

  • "The food was great, the attention too. However, it was very disrespectful when a guy of the staff told the person that paid the bill of 6 people that the tip was to little in front of everybody. Not to excuse the client but he was a forefinger that just assumed $50 were enough. I totally understand that the only money that the staff make is from the tips, but is very impolite to say that in front of the people. Other than that the restaurant was great!"

  • "Hadn't been to Old Homestead in quite a while and was pleased to receive a gift certificate this past Christmas. The restaurant was just as we had remembered and the food was outstanding. Our steaks and side orders were cooked perfectly and on a super cold night, we topped off the evening with some Irish coffee-Most likely the best Irish coffees we've ever tasted. The menu is a little pricey but its a great place for a special occasion as there were several parties going on around us-For us, being only a table for two, we would have preferred a more quiet atmosphere but the noise level was a testimony to diners having a good time and enjoying themselves. Have never been disappointed!"

  • "Very noisy. Had to shout to hear people across the table. Wait/host staff also had a bit of an attitude, which when you're paying $200 per person isn't appreciated. Many other good steakhouses in the city; won't be back."

  • "Food was great, service was great but it's really loud, like really loud but shouldn't diminish from it's excellent rating."

  • "The service was deplorable. The only explanation for this establishment still being in business is the location and onetime tourist business. The waiter was MIA from the first moment. The dry aged ribeye was underwhelming at best. The staff at the Corner Bistro have more charm, are more attentive and their tasty bistro burgers are more satisfying even on paper plates. I cannot recommend."

  • "I have been dining at the Old Homestead for the past 35 years. It never ceases to amaze me. The appetizers we shared were all spot on, and if you are a prime rib lover, the Empire Cut is other worldly."

  • "Old Homestead is still one of the top steak joints in the city..they were 4 for 4 with our table...everyone enjoy the dinner...service."

  • "Food excellent but unfortunately a group including three children (all under 7 years of age) were seated across from us. It is very upsetting to have children in a fine restaurant such as The Old Homestead. The children became noisy, disruptive and extremely annoying. I truly do not understand why my dining experience must be so drastically compromised by others who insist on bringing their children into expensive, ADULT restaurants. It is not my responsibility to help raise YOUR children. I am upset with the management for allowing this behavior to continue. The Old Homestead is not Chuckie Cheese and the prices definitely reflect that."

  • "I went with my wife and 2 adult kids on Saturday night. Second floor room was very loud. It was hard to hear the person next to you. Steaks was very good, but not as flavorful as some of the other great steakhouses I've been to (Luger's, Strip House). Everything was very good, but I probably would not go back."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "We had a great time to say the least. The food and the service were outstanding. We are looking to return in the near future."

  • "-hostesses were not inviting and usually they make an effort to greet you first -customer service was not provided for our table, but more for the surrounding tables -main course of fish was room temp but vegetables warm -other guest will yelp about her tasteless steak -wine list not provided and had to be requested and received after a long delay I've been to Quality Meats, Keens, Mortons and Ruth Chris where the dining experience were all exceptional, along with the food. I expected to much from Old H. Or we weren't the right people they wanted to serve"

  • "We got the 40 day aged rib eye cut for two. It was a good cut but you could tell they didn't trim the edges well and it was under seasoned. We made reservations, thinking it was going to be packed, but we could have walked in off the street and been fine. The service was really good. The servers was always at the table filling glasses, plating food and asking how we were doing. All in all a good experience."

  • "It was a special occasion as we celebrated our son's 18th Birthday and we succeeded in upping his game from gourmet burgers to the best steak house we've been to, as a family. Wine list was comprehensive, wait-staff was outstanding and the meat cuts were superb...in hindsight, i wish i had more room for some bacon... Not a Vegan Destination but certainly a phenomenal steak (& potato) dinner; A little pricey but it is a steakhouse in NYC"
