Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant is located on the old pier at Fisherman's wharf in Monterrey. Obviously a lot of tourists eat here. The food was good with a lot of local seafood. My wife and I shared a bottle of Chardonnay, a king crab appetizer, and a sand dab main course. The wine and food were both excellent. The service was great. Our table overlooked Monterrey bay. What is not to like."

  • "Definitely a place for the tourists and a bit of the feel of pushing through orders for quantity rather than quality but good nonetheless. Lacking a bit of finesse and some aspects of the meal were over-cooked and/or under-seasoned but it was ok."

  • "From the outside, you would never think the restaurant looked the way it did on the inside. It had a very romantic feel and we were given a window seat with excellent views. More of an upscale seafood restaurant than I expected. The air conditioning was blowing under the table when we first got in, we addressed it, and it was quickly fixed so we could enjoy our dinner without freezing. The waitress was very attentive and we received our food in a timely manner."

  • "We went because it was close by, and went right back the next night agin! Everything was great, but we went back for the amazing griled artichokes. They are marinated in a balsamic marinade andthen grilled...so good! Best of all, the bill was very reasonable."

  • "Our positive experience started with a sample of amazing clam chowder and continued until the women diners received roses. The food and service were top notch."

  • "We arrived early and were welcomed like a member of the family. I believe the owner greeted us on the wharf. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty. The staff is dressed in classic style and the service was impeccable. Did I mention the food was delicious and they delivered a rose to my wife at the end of the meal. We are recommending this experience to everyone!"

  • "Very slow service. Appetizer of a roasted artichoke came our super quck and turned out to be cold. There was no way that was cooked when we ordered if. It was clearly sitting out awhile. The place was very "old school" design and a little depressing inside. Clam chowder was very good and so was Cajun tilapia dish."

  • "My Bay Area boyfriend and I decided to try the Saint Patrick's Day menu they offered instead of going to an Irish bar to celebrate. We were so glad we did! The food was great as always, and the rose at the end is special! We love the Romantjc booths upstairs. It is quiet, and we can talk! It is a great local treasure. I bring all my out-of-town guests there! But, my Bay Area boyfriend who loves great Bay Area restaurants just loves it, too!"

  • "Enjoyed the visit to this restaurant. Great views and great location. Parking was out of the way and did not expect walk. Arrived and taken to table. Server was very quiet but adequate. Food was great, but got cold quickly. Overall a great time and what you expect in a tourist hot spot."

  • "The Hostess started our evening with such a genuine welcome, followed by a very attentative Server that completed the rest of our wonderful dining experience. Great variety and value for lunch or dinners. The food is priced for everyone and always consistent with flavor and service. They know how to prepare any type of fried Calamari: whether it's an appetizer or a steak parmeasan; very tender and tasty. The mixed seafood pasta and Salmon are wonderful too. The desserts are also delicious with a beautiful presentation. We always dine here when company is in town, or as a Local several times a year."

  • "This was a experience of fine dining. The service was fit for royalty. My wife and I really enjoyed the romantic atmosphere. to top it off after dinner a rose was given to the ladies. I would indefinitely suggest to everyone, this is a must"

  • "If you are an adult couple who enjoys ambience, good food & wine, this is the place for you. It's an unexpected oasis on Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, which is very tourist-y and hectic."

  • "THE SERVICE: WOW. Made reservations and requested a seat by the window. Got it. Free appetizers. Told my waitress I was allergic to gluten. She made sure my food was safe to eat. Overall nice and attentive. Free creme brulee for my boyfriend's birthday. And they gave me (and all the women in the restaurant) a rose. WOW. THE AMBIANCE: Came here on a Monday night and it was packed! But not too loud and extremely romantic with a lovely view of the water. THE FOOD: Free grilled artichoke and calamari which was okay. I ordered the grilled seabass which was a very big portion! But the taste was just decent. Also got sweet potato fries which were really good. My boyfriend got the scallops which looked like a small portion but he enjoyed them."

  • "Our waiter was great, except he kept asking tables loudly, "How did I do?", when he delivered the check. The food was FAIR--banquet fare. Otherwise a nice place to eat, but they either need to work on their kitchen staff, or they won't be around long. Salmon with a parmesan "crust" was mushy with something wet and unidentifiable by taste on top. The accompanying rissoto was sticky and slimy. Coconut shrimp was what you would expect in a burger chain. You had to imagine the coconut. Maybe we hit them on a bad night, but it doesn't seem likely."

  • "My family enjoys visiting the Grotto for the Locals Menu (Mon-Thurs, w/local ID)! Great selection, and the service is top-notch. No, really -- we always notice that the service is consistently the best in any area restaurant! Free parking after 4 pm for locals (w/ID), located on the Disney-fied Fisherman's Wharf. What's not to love?"

  • "Went and had dinner with some out of town guests and we all raved about how great the food was! I am a local and do not frequent this restaurant. It is located on Fisherman's Wharf, a local tourist area. However, I was quite surprised it wasn't as "touristy" as some places. I had the grilled stuffed shrimp and was delicious. The cup of clam chowder was more like a bowl - good portion! Appetizers were the calimari and grilled artichoke...we gobbled that up too! Highly recommend this place for fresh seafood."

  • "We enjoyed this restaurant very much. The service was great. We were given a table by the window and our waiter was exceptional. The food was well prepared and very good. It was busy and still everything came out on time hot. This is a very well run restaurant and a great dining experience in Monterey. I highly recommend it. Thank you for a great holiday experience."

  • "My wife was born in Pacific Grove, so we drive down to the Monterey Bay Area frequently. Every. Year around New Years we spend a few days here. The highlight of each of our trips to this area is dining at the Old Fisherman's Grotto. The staff is very organized and friendly, service is excellent, the food is alway the best, and the view (if you get a window table) is spectacular. We have traveled to all 50 states and 31 countries and have not found a place we enjoy more."

  • "This is where my husband and I had our first dinner as husband and wife and it is our go to spot for the best atmosphere and food. The menu describes the food in a way you can see where it comes from and feel like you must taste it. The service is top notch, very knowledgeable staff and each time we have come, I get a rose from the staff. The wine list is very descriptive and we sat by the window in the downstairs dinning room, and we had a visiting seagull who provided us with much entertainment, along with the seals playing with unsuspecting kayakers. The food was very delicious and we will again visit there, hopefully on our anniversary."

  • "Christmas Day experience was disappointing. First, my husband ordered prime rib, the waiter came back stating there was no more prime rib. then he ordered rib eye steak, medium rare which came over cooked and very tough. Just a little disappointing."

  • "We went to this restaurant on Christmas Day. We had low expectations, given that it was a holiday and the restaurant is located in a very touristy area, but we were pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. Prices are somewhat high for the quality, but not unexpected given the location. Service was very good. The food was better than expected, although a bit on the heavy side. We loved the retro feel of the restaurant."

  • "I was a little worried that the Fisherman's Wharf would be too touristy for our Christmas dinner. But I was pleasantly surprised. The selection of seafood, prime rib, and lamb was perfect for the varied tastes of our group. I particularly enjoyed the local swordfish. Atmosphere was festive and service was great!"

  • "It was fabulous, great service, good choice menu. They gave it the personal touch with rose petals arranged in heart shape across the table top, they knew it was our anniversary. The food was excellent, surf and turf was our choice, we will definitely be back. A very nice setting, dimly lit and romantic. Our new #1 spot."

  • "I found this place on yelp and booked a 7:15 dinner reservation based on its many reviews and 4-star rating. It was my boyfriends early Xmas present and first trip to Monterey as he is a recent transplant from Tenessee. He is an avid steak lover, I am a seafood Junkie so the online menu made it easy to see that this place was a great fit for us. We were seated promptly and I requested a table with a bay view. That's exactly what we got! The clam chowder was THE BEST! I added a cup for $5 to my meal. The ambience was surprisingly romantic with dim lights and candlelit tables. His ribeye was a big hit and so was my seafood platter. We took chocolate moose cake and chocolate cheesecake to go! I left with a full tummy and a rose in my hand!"

  • "I had a sailboat in the Monterey harbor for a few years and did extensive research after races to find the best fried calamari around the harbor. After trying calamari from just about everybody I settled on the Old Fisherman's Grotto as having the best. Went there for my birthday recently, the food and service was excellent- it's hard to branch out to try other dishes when the calamari and the grilled sandabs are so good. And my wife had the pumpkin ravioli with two grilled prawns and it was beyond delicious. When they found out it was my birthday the VIP treatment started. Great place."

  • "We made 2 reservations, each for a group of 4, for a total of 8 people because the restaurant doesn't allow for reservations of more that 4 people. It worked out fine and we were seated together. The food was great with quick service, as we all had to get back to a meeting."

  • "Old Fisherman's Grotto is a treat not to be missed. It is an excellent example of attention to detail in both food and service. We were celebrating an anniversary and wanted a quiet table which was waiting for us when we arrived. Our watress, Cecilia, was very knoweable about the food and wine selections. Everthing we ordered came out promptly, deliciously prepared and beautifully presented. We both agreed that the clam chowder was the best we'd ever had. All in all we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Good enough that we came back for lunch later in our stay for another chance to have the clam chowder"

When arrived they had a table on the second floor with a great view. The table was decorated with candles and and rose petals shaped into a heart. The wait staff was awesome and extremely attentive. The food was so good we returned for dinner on the next night."
