Diner Reviews
  • "The food was fresh and a variety of choices but I was completely disappointed in the bouillabaise. It was not worthy of the price and wasn't notable at all. My husband like his special of fresh fish but overall for the prive-Very disappointing."

  • "This is a fine restaurant. We've been dining in the Sanibel-Captiva area for many years, and this is the first time we finally ate at the Old Captiva House. The food was outstanding - every dish presented a truly superb blending of flavors that creates a symphony of flavors - what great cooking truly is, and a unique thing to find. The dishes were also beautifully prepared. The service was excellent - very attentive and professional, but still personal. The setting is hard to beat - there are two charming dining rooms. If you'll be there at sunset (which is strongly recommended), ask to be seated at one of the window tables in the front dining room with a view of the gulf and the sunset. This makes the experience really special."

  • "We had a very nice time at this well known local restaurant. The decor is bright and attractive with a nice view of the water. Seafood was great and our waiter was very friendly and responsive."

  • "The food is wonderful. Try the watermelon & goat cheese salad to start and the snapper wrap for an entree"

  • "My daughter had filet (her dinner was good), I had lamb rack - it was terrible, mostly fat & bone, vegetables were good, but cold, potatoes were good. The lamb dinner was removed from the bill!"

  • "Old Captiva House was by far the best restaurant in Captiva! I wish we had found it sooner!"

  • "Great food every time we come to the Old Captiva House - Tween Waters Inn. The menu is imaginative and diverse. The service is exceptional. The view of the Gulf beach and sunsets are beyond compare."

  • "Excellent service from all points of view: our reservation process, the greeting, the table size and location, the menu, the waiter and the food. First restaurant in CAPTIVA/ SANNIBEL that I would make a reservation for while I was in the area."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner here on a Monday evening. Our waiter, Nile, was attentive and knowledgeable. The food was delicious! We started with baked brie and shrimp cocktail. For dinner we had the pompano and spicy tuna which were cooked to perfection. We finished with a chocolate mousse cake and raspberry white chocolate creme brulee. The atmosphere was enjoyable with the beautiful view of the Gulf and the live piano music in the other room. This restaurant is a definite must do when visiting Captiva or Sanibel Island!"

  • "On a good note, we did enjoy the piano player. He did a real nice job. We also enjoyed the sunset from our table. We did decide on the location since they were the #1 ranked Resturant on Captiva by Trip Advisor. However, food was very disappointing. The Grouper was over-cooked. The Tuna was over-salted. The carrots were not even cooked enough to eat. They were hard to slice. This was my third time here and by far the worst meal. It was disappointing considering we were celebrating a birthday. Our meal was $200 for 2 adults, 2 children which included a bottle of wine. It was not worth what we received. Too bad about the food because it is a lovely place."

  • "The entrance to the restaurant was nice with a small shop and piano man. The hostess had our reservation ready upon arrival about 10 minutes early, which I was happy to note. We were seated at a corner location of the restaurant with great views of the water and sunset; however, the table itself was horrible - the top was uneven and it wobbled so much the table candle literally tipped over when we sat down! (Thank goodness for battery operated candles!) With respect to food, we ordered a hamburger for the kids (excellent), escargot (good), smoked steak tartar (good), pompano (overcooked but good) and bouillabaisse (bland but good). Service was mostly good. Overall, I would hesitate to return."

  • "We have gone there every year that we have been on Captiva for vacation. Very disappointed with the food. One of our family members ordered the smaller portion of the lobster ravioli, the were served 3 ravioli. Another had the boulliabas, it had no taste. We won't be returning."

  • "My wife and I had a very quiet dinner at Captiva House. We were one of only two couples in the whole room. This was probably due to the fact that the Memorial Day crowd had gone home. I had the duck and my wife had the snapper. My duck was nicely cooked, but the accompanying risotto was dry. My wife's snapper was excellent and the accompanying polenta was also excellent. Our service was a little off, probably due to the fact that our room had only two occupied tables. Apparently, most the diners were seated in another room (that didn't have the view our room had). With all the other good restaurants on Sanibel and Captiva to choose from, we probably will not dine here again."

  • "each year on vacation, we always drive to Captiva for dinner at the Old Captiva House - it's the best place to dine on the islands. excellent food, a terrific wine list, sunsets over the beach - whats not to love? Come & Enjoy - a great treat "

  • "This may have been the best dining experience that we ever had. We were looking for a special place to celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary that would be romantic and all that romance needs for a special date night with the one that you love. We looked all over Sanibel and Captiva and found everything that we wished for at the Old Captiva House. The food was exceptional as well as the service. The ambience which included a piano player during dinner was the icing on the cake. The "Sunset Room" was absolute magic as we watched the sun sink into the sea as we toasted another wonderful year together. We strongly recommend a visit to this jewel of Captiva to anyone that wants the ultimate experience for that special occasion. "

  • "Last weekend I hosted two dear friends for their first visit to the area. We wanted to look around Sanibel and Captiva and see the sun set. This restaurant is simply delightful. It is set on the grounds of the old inn, and the vibe is happy Florida. Our server poured our wine and we wandered outside - with most of the other diners - to watch a breathtaking sunset. We all cheered and headed back to our tables for a fabulous meal. I was hesitant to go there because of some of the negative reviews, but everything about our evening was one for the memory book! "

  • "What a great evening! Started off with crab races next door and had a blast. Very entertaining and lots of laughs!! Dinner at Old Captiva is best on island by far! Nice view of sunset over the gulf. Would highly recommend for dinner or lunch!"

  • "We have driven by the restaurant a 1,000 times and finally decided to try it because I could use my open table app. I am happy we did. The food was amazing and the interior was gorgeous! I was with a party of 5, we all had something different...I don't think you can go wrong with any of the items on the menu. The staff could have been friendlier... But it didn't ruin my meal!"

  • "Beautiful Gulf dining; gorgeous setting. Hostess was not the best; rather distracted & less than cordial; but our wait staff made up for that 10x over & the food was fantastic. Our reservation were made far in advance, though we would not have needed them as the dining room was not busy although this was peak season. We had 3 adults & two children 10 & 12 years old. White tablecloths & napkins! There was no children's menu; but we preferred that.....this was not a fast food venue. A great selection of meals; beautiful views of the ocean as the sun was setting.....perfect 1st evening on Captiva Island!"

  • "Probably the best restaurant in Captiva with regards to food quality and ambiance (the Green Flash is a close second), though a bit pricy (but you get what you pay for). We were celebrating our anniversary so were offered a table in a small alcove for some privacy. The food was excellent and the only issue was slightly undercooked slices of duck breast which was corrected promptly. The server graciously apologized and the chef provided free desserts to make up for that. All in all a pleasant experience."

  • "We had the crab cake and seared ahi appetizers and both were fantastic. My wife had the sea bass special and I had the jerk grouper, and both were cooked perfectly with unique and delicious presentation. We will definitely go again when we're in the area."

  • "Eight of us wanted to have dinner during Sanibel's spring high season and it was no easy feat to find a restaurant that could seat us. When the Mad Hatter put us on its waiting list, I asked them to recommend other possibilities. They urged us to try Old Captiva House and we loved it. The food was delicious and we sat in the front dining room to witness a spectacular sunset. The server was pleasant and knowledgeable but a little less attentive toward the end of the meal than we would have liked. Still, with good food and great friends, the evening was a success. Everyone in our party would be happy to recommend the restaurant to other friends and to return."

  • "We had 5 people in our party including a 2 year old and the food was fabulous, the atmosphere is great and the service was perfect! We walked across the street for the sunset and ended the night just perfectly! We will be back next year!!!"

  • "The Old Captiva House is a preserved gem of a "Florida Remembered". Excellent food in a rustic, but elegant environment. Watch the sunset and then step in and enjoy truly exceptional food in a nostalgic relaxing environment with quiet piano music in the background. As a 5th generation Floridian, I recognize the Old Captiva House for the beautiful anachronism it represents."

  • "We had so looked forward to having dinner again at Old Captiva House- Had requested a nice table but I have found such requests made on Open Table are ignored- Hostess showed us to a table in the serving crossfire between outdoors and indoors-when we pointed to two alternative tables we would prefer we were told someone had already requested those. Shown to our seat, we waited quite a while to be acknowledged by anyone, then flagged the hostess down to ask if we might order a cocktail. The wait staff couldn't handle the volume of diners-we were rushed through ordering, then never saw our waiter to order wine with dinner-busboy cleared us, asked if we'd like dessert, tossed the menu on the table and rushed off-food was ok-wasn't a nice time"

  • "Can't say enough good things about the food. The server we had was excellent but he had at least a dozen tables. We felt bad for him as the establishment set him up to fail. He did the best he could. Hope they fix that issue."

  • "The food preparation, presentation and flavors were outstanding! I don't know when I have had a more exquisite meal. The food was creative and a mix of flavors that I had never had before. I cannot say enough about this wonderful meal! Everyone coming to Captiva FL must have at least one meal here, you will remember it until you return!"

  • "We went to this restaurant when our kids were young, approx. 15 years ago and wanted to try it again. We were very pleased with the experience; food, atmosphere and service were all good. We were given a window table with a view of the ocean and the sunset. The menu offered a number of great choices and we liked the two-size approach to the mains. The only difficulty was parking with so many assigned spots. We'd definitely go back.i"

  • "Everything was perfect. Not a flaw to be mentioned. Great food, service and location Steak, ahi tuna, and scallops were all tasty. Bread was delicious. The drinks were some of the best I've had. I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you choose here."

  • "We enjoyed a very nice meal, having the tilefish special and the popano off the menu. Fish was cooked perfectly and beautifully presented. Wait staff visits were well-timed and helpful. There were a few large tables that created enough noise to make it difficult to talk at times."

  • "We dined at Old Captiva House twice during our week recently at Captiva. The food was really very, very good. It is so nice to be able to go to a dining room that has a great menu and be able to dress comfortably. The first night everything was perfect. We ate inside in the cheery, comfortable dining room. The next time we dined on the outside patio on a lovely evening. That night our service was a bit spotty, maybe because it was one of the first evenings offering outside dining? But, again, the food was very good. We would definitely go back and we would definitely recommend eating there. It is a wonderful island atmosphere with better than average island dining. Overall...great!!"
