A most charming dining spot, the Old Angler's Inn has been immortalized in countless Washington D.C. novels as a romantic winter getaway, sitting before the fireplace and perusing the menu. It is equally glorious in the summer when the main action moves to the incomparable terrace.

Diner Reviews
  • "The menu selection was strange. All four of us have traveled extensively and it was a difficult menu to select two choices. Many items did not match well. The menu was kitchen sink. Lacked good combinations. Unclear if the mimosas were part of the brunch. Beautiful place but food was not a match."

  • "I hike across the street so when my friend invited me to dinner I choose this place. We were pleased with the professional and attentive staff. The moonlight and ambiance offered the perfect opportunity to relax, talk, and enjoy a delicious glass of wine and a salmon dish. I have added Old Angler as one of favorite places to eat!"

  • "Meal was above average; service was average; dessert was terrible (agreed by the nearby table -who had same dessert). Nice outdoor seating."

  • "We all enjoyed ourselves. I had been to the Old Anglers Inn about 18 years ago and at that time, it was just ok. Our niece and nephew wanted to go, and my husband had never been. In 2014, I am so glad we went! The bartender knew what he was doing, the food was great (I must throw in a good word for the fois gras appetizer) we tried each other's meals so I can vouch for the exellence of the filet mignon, the lamb, and the scallops. The goat cheesecake with pear was yummy, as was the espresso. The servers were professional. We will be back."

  • "My family and I usually eat lunch at the Inn. This was our first dinner. We had expected just an upgrade from what is always a delicious and thought out lunch menu, but were absolutely and pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant morphed into a fine dining dinner venue. We ate upstairs and, we all had variations of the organic and free range beef special (which is a treat since we rarely eat red meat) and, each one of us agreed the food was exceptional. The service was attentive without being overbearing, professional without losing the personal warmth, and impeccable in every way. We will be back."

  • "The Old Angler's Inn, a long-ago favorite for special occasions, has renewed itself. With its excellent cuisine and refurbished interior, it has surpassed its earlier reputation. The outdoor venues, including the grill and the beer garden, provide many different dining experiences. Having sat by the roaring fireplace, I'm looking forward to dining on the outdoor terrace soon."

  • "My husband and I were so surprised by how nice our date was at Old Angler's. We have driven by it for years but usually go out in Bethesda and DC. The food was very creative, fresh, and delicious. It is similar to but much better than 1789 in Georgetown. We will definitely visit it regularly from now on."

  • "This is one of the best restaurants I have been to in a long time. The food was oustanding. I had a cut of steak that was perfectly done. The sides were delicious and complimented the steak perfectly. Our waiter recommended a great wine to go with our dish. Unfortunatately we went on a cold rainy day, but their outdoor seating area looks like a site I will need to visit in the future."

  • "We love our Old Angler's Inn. The delicious menu changes frequently and although they are offering healthier choices, it's good to know a girl can still get a cheeseburger with fries!"

  • "Anglers has been for a couple of years a terrific restaurant with charming decor. We go every couple of weeks, and the food is truly spectacular."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner here. We sat downstairs near the fireplace. The room glows. It's very romantic. The entire staff could not have been nicer. The food looked beautiful and tasted wonderful. It happened to be half price wine night which was an added bonus. If you are looking for a cheap meal this is not the place for you. But, if you are looking for very good food, lovely service in a beatiful atmosphere, this is your place. Looking forward to a return trip."

  • "poor oysters this time...extremely big and too much artificial..the rest of the plates excellent, as well as the service. Place to keep in the loop, but avoid these oysters..."

  • "Excellent food, very romantic and one of the few restaurants where you can have a conversation without shouting at one another. Very, very civilized. Cosy in winter; lovely outdoor dining in summer. Good service. It is a rare gem and with a revised and excellent kitchen."

  • "lovely white table cloth evening for good food and conversation. normally they only takes credit cards but were flexible enough to take personal check with picture id and telephone number. the menu had lovely choices, including amish chicken, tilefish and rockfish with creatively developed accompanying veggies. we each ordered different dishes and shared to broaden our exposure to the great cuisine. the elevator was not functional, so access to the second story dining room was via a quaint winding iron stair case. service was slow enough so we were not rushed. nice wine choices by the glass, and a delicious home smoked salmon tartine appetizer and fabulous sage bread. prices are a little on the high side, but portions are reasonable!"

  • "We have lived here many years but had never been to Old Angler's Inn and had read some good reviews recently--so glad we decided to come! A wonderful, cozy place--dinner by the fireside table was perfect!--great service and wonderful food with a nice selection on the menu. Especially enjoyed the chef's meatball/pasta appetizer which had a spicy zing to it, but without being too spicy--hit the mark just right. The desserts were also fabulous, especially the key lime cremeux. It made for a very special birthday celebration with our group of friends. We'll definitely be back--next time we'll have to come back in warmer weather to enjoy the beautiful patio."

  • "Excellent option to go out for a nice dinner with no special occasion. Although a couple key menu items were out the substitutes were just as welcomed. Spectacular service and always recommended."

  • "The Old Angler's Inn is the most charming and cozy restaurant in all Potomac and Bethesda. Great atmosphere and dining outside when the weather is the best. I patron this cozy place about 2x a year. While the food remains consistently very good, the service is suspect. Maybe an off night but drinks ordered came to wrong and one was completely forgotten. Waiters/Waitress serving our table was most notably off a step or two."

  • "The restaurant had 2 pre fixe menus to choose from. We chose the 3 course menu and it was delicious. I had the Maine Lobster Salad, Filet Mignon and a wonderful dessert. Waiters were attentive, food was delicious and enough that I took 1/2 the filet home. They also gave a $20 gift card to come back and I can't wait."

  • "Fantastic experience. The ambience was teriffic- roaring fire on a cold, snowy night. Intimate setting- candle lit- very romantic. Food was excellent- and the service and attention was outstanding. I'd highly recommend Old Angler's."

  • "We have passed Old Angler's man times, but never actually dined there. On a whim, I thought It would be fun to have dinner there after Valentine's Day, and am I ever glad that I did! We loved the food -- it was top quality and the service was attentive and helpful. We had the fixed price menu with wine pairings and although it was not inexpensive, it was a great value. We'd pay far more for the same at lesser restaurants in town."

  • "Cannot beat the atmosphere at Old Angler's Inn on a chilly winter's day. Large log fire, cozy, cozy venue. Welcoming bar and staff. Hot cider- spiked if you like with dark rum. Dined here this time for Valentine's Day. Five course menu - good variety of dishes and made substitutions for non-seafood eater in our party with no problem. Portions just right, flavors good. Clever 'Pavlova' for dessert. Perfect for conversation. Enjoyed the whole experience."

  • "The Inn has been a go-to for us every February. Every visit, the place seems to get better and better. The fireplace opens up the main floor, along with the bar area. The chef creates a unique menu with wine pairings for many occasions. I recognize many of the staff members upon each visit. If you haven't eaten at Old Angler's Inn, you have to give it a try!"

  • "It was not properly and clearly advised when booked for Valentine's party on February 14th, that the restaurant would provide 3 or 4 courses menu. Terrifically expensive even for such day (like in 5 stars hotel restaurant in D.C.). No chance to get a regular menu a-la carte. They provided on request vey simple substitions but at the same price: not fair at all."

  • "Our Valentine's dinner was awesome. The Lobster Salad was excellent. Our filet migon was cooked to perfection and the sides were wonderful. The desserts were wonderful as well. I had the cheesecake that was so smooth and creamy. My husband loves chocolate and he enjoyed the chocolate dessert."

  • "This venue is a wonderful spot to enjoy when you want to entertain friends for a special occasion. The ambience has, for me, always been charming and the food wonderful. The fireplace in the winter lends a backdrop that sets a tone that invites good conversation and congenial time togethr with a friend or friends."

  • "Over the decades the historic Old Angler's Inn has gone up and down in food quality and decor (especially on the inside) and I have been going there for at least 5 decades. It is now at another high point in cuisine and I highly recommend it. But it is expensive so be prepared to spend money on what can be a very romantic winter event around a cosy fire place with outstanding food. If you are not into winter outings, just wait for spring, summer and fall when the outside terrace dining is spectacular and incredibly beautiful and you can often pay a bit less."

  • "The small menu may not satisfy the customers who grew up on "casual dining." But, I have never had anything here that is not wonderful! I even ordered an odd rye whiskey recently. Didn't like it, sent it back and got Knob Creek Bourbon as a replacement, no problem. Furthermore, the wine list is outstanding and everyone in Potomac needs to hit this spot for lunch. Check the menus on-line. Why do I ever go to downtown Bethesda?"
