Diner Reviews
  • "Menu offers a large variety of fresh fish with numerous, yummy preparations served piping hot. Menu includes some classics too like Oysters Rockefeller and baked Alaska flambéed tableside. They always seem to have a nice selection (8) of oysters and clams (1). Crab cocktail and crab cakes are best around. Tasty sides are offered a la carte. Not to be missed is creamed corn and lobster mac and cheese (packed with plenty of lobster). Great cocktails and nice, reasonably-priced wine list. Lively atmosphere. If you're looking for a quieter table for conversation, ask for one of the booths at the back."

  • "Food was excellent. We ate mostly cold items like the Seafood Tower, Crabcakes, Lobster, Shrimp Cocktails, etc. It was all very fresh and very good. The Clam Chowder is a thin, buttery broth and was very tasty, but not the traditional type. The Boston Crème Pie is the way to end the meal. Service can be slow since the waiters have to climb up and down stairs to the kitchen. Backup help was not there to clear dishes and top out drinks."

  • "The service was outstanding, the ritzy haddock I had was the best I have had in years, and the baked alaska to die for. All in all, an excellent restaurant."

  • "We had a lovely evening to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. The food was delicious, service attentive without being intrusive and the ambience was very pleasant. Definitely recommend this to anyone who would like such a delightful experience."

  • "Two of us dined on a Saturday night. We were seated immediately, and had a lovely table tucked in a quiet corner. Our server explained the specials and offered us complimentary taste of an appetizer as it was our first time at the restaurant. The menu is focused on seafood, and provided a great variety of offerings. Both entrees were outstanding (salmon and halibut on rissoto), as was the appetizer (crabcakes). we finihsed with a Boston Cream pie that was the perfect ending to the meal."

  • "I come to this restaurant often for special occasions or when family is visiting. Beautiful renovated old building in a central location. While a little pricey, it still offers great gourmet sea food that doesn't completely ruin your bank account if you visit periodically. LOVE their salmon, but also suggest their mussels, swordfish and crab cakes. Best key lime pie I've ever had."

  • "My husband and I celebrated out anniversary dinner at Oceansire and it was such a memorable evening. The ambience was wonderful and the good was superb. But it was the staff who put it over the top. From the moment we arrived we were greeted in a very friendly way. Our waiter, Stephen was outstanding, friendly and when he discovered that it was our anniversary he made certain that the entire evening was special in every wAy. We have come to Oceansire in Boston many times and are never disappointed. Every time we come we enjoy it even more."

  • "we went on a Thursday night with a party of 9. The room is extraordinarily noisy, but our back corner table was the best of the lot. Our servers were very pleasant, but it took about 15 minutes to place our drink orders, and another 15 minutes to receive them -- and hours to get dinner. From our arrival at 7:30, it took 3 ½ hours before we left. The seafood was excellent across the board, however. The wine list is very expensive, in that there were only one or two wines on the list below the $50 range. We could go back again for a very special occasion, but not for just a night out."

  • "Handsome room, delicious food. Plan to share, as portions are enormous! It can take a while to get their attention, but they are responsive once you get them."

  • "We're pretty sophisticated diners who have lived most of our lives in the San Francisco and Washington, DC areas, but still we were blown away by the overall excellence of the Oceanaire. The menu is overwhelming, and everything we ordered was just as described and just as we requested. Excellent wine and cocktail menu, too. Like all first-class restaurants, the Oceanaire allowed us to enjoy everything at our own pace: This is definitely a place to go if you want a dining experience. But, best of all, was the service. Our waiter was probably the best I've ever had in 50 years or more of dining out. We'll be back, and, in fact, will be trying out the Oceanaire in Washington, DC this weekend on the basis of our experience in Boston."

  • "Our service was great but the food didnt feel as though we should have paid $240 with tip. Drinks were pretty expensive which didnt help. $14 drinks."

  • "Our server was not very attentitive from the beginning. We had to ask the busboys for more water and horseradish for the oysters. The wrong dish was brought out to my friend, there was barely an apology, it took almost 10 minutes for her actual fish dish to come out, and there was no compensation for the inconvenience. While I understand that things can go wrong in the kitchen, I think that when they do they should be apologized for and there should be an effort made to correct the error."

  • "Consistently one of the best in Boston. The food, service, ambiance, and list of cocktails make Oceanaire one of my favorites in town."

  • "Another great meal at Oceanaire. The Alaska halibut was cooked perfectly and the service was fantastic. I can't believe how much food I ate. Don't forget the Boston Cream Pie!"

  • "The seafood was great but the service was subpar. This is always disappointing to me when you go to a higher end restaurant but the service is lower end. When we first came in we were 15 minutes early for our reservation. It was 9pm and the hostess asked us to sit at the bar because there were no tables open. The fact is there were plenty of tables. This is just annoying. The specialty cocktail list was extremely crappy. Adding a lime to a cape codder does not make it a specialty. Our server was nice and made recommendations but she never give us her name, did not check on us very often, and she accidentally took something away that we were still eating. All in all you can get great seafood somewhere else with better service."

  • "This is part of a chain (Landry's) but it definitely doesn't seem like it. Located in a renovated bank, the decor is wonderful and feels very special occasion. The menu is varied and the cooking is top shelf. The reason I am so enthusiastic is that I am happy to find an excellent seafood place in Boston after suffering for years with the more famous local chain which is uninspired to the point of mediocrity. There is also another Landry's seafood place in Boston (Chart House) but this is better. PS: They have a scrumptious chopped spinach salad."

  • "If you enjoy eating at a steakhouse, with a la carte menu and large tables of business people and party celebrants, this is your choice. The service is impeccable, and the food is excellent, but not creative."

  • "I took my girl friend here for dinner on a Saturday night. After ordering our meal, we waited over 15 min for our appetizer then then waitor brought us over a tuna tartar "bite" to, I guess hold us over as we waited an additional 10 minutes. Mind you we only ordered a cup of soup and fried asparagus. After finishing our apps we waiting another 30 min for out entree (shrimp and pasta and seared scallops). We hardly saw our waitor as he was too busy schmoozing the large table next to us. When we called him out on it he kept referring to my gf as "young lady" in an insulting manner bee told him we wanted to see the manger. We finally we able to tell the manager as we were leaving and he told us we should have told him earlier. Never again. "

  • "At these prices being presented with a dish of canned olives, carrot sticks and cucumber slices seems cheap and very 50's. The crusty bread had almost soggy interior and was mushy. The crab corn chowder was delicious and in a size suitable for a first course. My grilled salmon was good but just slightly over done. The side of spinach was all stems. Considering the prices for the food in this room it should be a lot better."

  • "This was a wonderful place for a celebratory dinner. Food was great, ambiance was lovely, service was top-notch, and, while it wasn't at all quiet, it was very easy to have great conversation with everyone around the table."

  • "We enjoyed a recent dinner at the Oceanaire in Washington DC so much that we booked a table in Boston for our anniversary. The food was just as good (fried asparagus & Salmon a la Crab Oscar) but the experience wasn't the same. It WAS was a busy weekend in the city and our waiter said it was unusually busy even for a Saturday night. But our waiter, while pleasant and polite, seemed timid and lacked the confident relaxed demeanor of our D.C. waiter. We were seated across from each other at a fairly wide table which lacked the intimacy of the round booth that we had in D.C. Service was slow, especially at the end and, to be fair, our waiter was very apologetic. Would like to return and see them master the art of catering to a full house."

  • "Finding great seafood is difficult in Boston and I thought I would try Oceianaire as it had been a while since I was there. it was rather disappointing. I had the "ritzy" haddock and could hardly find any fish as the dish was loaded with cracker crumbs that was mixed with a sauce that gave the dish a strange taste :-( Service was lacking intially as no waiter approached us at all for ten minutes until we went up to ask who was our server!"

  • "I've been to Oceanaire on a number of occasions. The food is always fresh. Great seafood and selection of oysters. This visit was with my wife to celebrate our anniversary. I noted this while making the reservation on the Open Table online app. Great nostalgic drinks menu (Sidecars, Old Fashioned, Martinis galore, etc.). Friendly staff who know the menu. When we arrived, they steered us to a nice table (as I had asked) and then put in front of us our menus that had been specially headlined "Happy Anniversary!" just for us. Nice. :) The waiter was friendly and attentive and helped us select our choices. And then our meal was capped off with a complimentary flaming Baked Alaska. We weren't rushed at all either. Great meal. Will def go back."
