  • "This restaurant is my city's destination for whole lobster, but was disappointed to learn 15 minutes after my guest and I had ordered that there were no whole lobsters available. The server should have known this at the time of ordering. Then, when I requested the menu back, she stood over my table waiting for me to order. A little awkward. I began to ask her questions about the menu, and the replies were very short and not as helpful as I would have expected. One example, Mushroom soup was the soup Du jour. When I asked her about it, she seemed 'stunned' that I would have a question about the soup. She replied ' It is mushroom soup'. I really expected some description of the types of mushrooms, the texture and taste, etc."

The wine we chose with a little help from our waiter Trey was a perfect accompaniment too. Our only disappointment was that our favorite waiter Adam wasn't working on the evening we were there. He always makes our dining experience special."

  • "While the quality of the food was good, four scallops and 21/2 brussels sprouts (cut in quarters) for $29.00 was a bit excessive. It is rare when my wife leaves a restaurant hungry. They must have spilled my wife's Manhattan on the way to the table as it arrived 3/4 full while similar cocktails for others were to the brim. The descriptions of the food are deceptive--sounds like you are getting a generous portion, but they are just listing the ingredients. It is made all the worse by serving it on a large plate."

  • "While visiting the Birmingham area from Missouri I made a few calls for what is considered the best seafood in the region. I was told no questions it had to be Ocean. Reservations are highly recommended here. Otherwise a lengthy wait on a Friday or Saturday will be in store. I chose the reservation recommendation. Upon arrival the valet parking is the best choice. My wife and I were greeted and subsequently seated within 3 minutes. The service was great as was the food quality. The entree pricing with relation to the overall food portion size concerned me a little. This place is not for a "hearty" eater. I expected a larger portion for a meal as pricey as this one. Especially having been to many comparable restaurants abroad."

  • "Wonderful dining experience at Ocean. We took out of town friends to Ocean Friday night. Was tough getting to the restaurant due to a pep rally for the BBVA Compass Bowl game. So we couldn't get to valet parking and had to walk a bit. But it was worth it! Seated well away from the door (which can get cold)s. We were brought wonderful breads w an olive oil dipping sauce and a chopped veggie spread. Our friends ordered the fabulous scallops (nobody does scallops better than Ocean) that came w a risotto and fantastic roasted brussel sprouts. They were so good that we asked for extra and they brought us a nice sized bowl. I had wood grilled lobster tails - wonderful! Specialty fish dish of the day were spectacular. Highly recommend!"

This noise level was a little bit more than I expected; however, that could have been due to the number of large parties there that night, as it was a few days before New Year's Eve.   • "The food was great but the overall experience was not! We were seated near the bar and the front door and as it became more crowded the noise level was unacceptable. It was a cold evening and the draft from the door made it very uncomfortable. Corrections need to be made for the cold and the draft. It is obviously a problem when the person at the reception desk needed to wear a coat. A previous visit was a much better experience. I don't think we will go again. There are much better alternatives in Birmingham."

The sushi was so flavorful. The best part was the drinks. You have inspired me to try to infuse some vodka at home. Thanks for a wonderful birthday celebration."

  • "This restaurant was highly recommended to us as a new couple in Birmingham so we used my wife's birthday as the perfect excuse to try it out. The staff was amazing and our waiter was highly knowledgeable about the menu. We tried the sushi, a few appetizers, and shared a main course - all were cooked well and the ingredients paired with each other to truly be greater as a whole than as separate parts. They have a great wine selection if you are looking to sample that sort of thing."

  • "We were sat in the back, under a heat lamp, near a door. It was December and very cold outside. We asked the hostess if that door opened; she said "No." The door actually did open, and was opened a lot and did not close all the way unless pushed. The seating arrangement was horrible. The waiter was okay. Very negligent in refilling water and such, but prompt with the food. The food was not worth the price. Salad was good and one of four meals was as expected. Two seafood dishes were intolerably salty, and the steak was just "meh". We'll never go back."

  • "We were seated right next to the door upon arrival. It was a cold night and we got a gust of very cold air every time the door opened. It was very dimly lit where we were seated which made it difficult to view the menu. The food was good, but nothing outstanding. The fried green tomato appetizer was the best thing out table ordered. I got the pan-seared grouper upon recommendation of the waiter and it was slightly disappointing to be one of the most popular things on the menu. Another got the lobster pot pie and I did not like it at all. The puff pastry and lobster was good, but nothing else about the dish was! As many good restaurants has I probably will not go back to for the price."

  • "This was our second time to Ocean. It was great again. We went for our 22nd anniversary. First of all it's not a quiet atmoshphere but I like that because you can carry on a conversation with feeling like everyone in the place can hear you. My wife had a filet with grilled lobster tail...wonderful. I had the grilled salmon...also excellent. Our waiter (William) was very nice, helpful and professional. We will go back soon."
