"The Occidental is famous and every once in a while it's nice to go to a famous restaurant. However, non of the four diners enjoyed their meals very much."

"If you are looking for a classic DC restaurant, this would certainly be a great one to pick. We had three children with us (10,12&14).They all ordered off the adult menu. The waiter was very professional and accommodating in both explanation and service. The kids felt welcome & special. Our selections were well presented and wonderful."

"Food was very good but should have been for the price. High end menu, short on selections, no surprises good or bad. This restaurant is all about it's location. Best for out of town guests who might be impressed by eating near The White House."

"Everything was wonderful.. Food, ambiance, atmosphere, drinks, service.. I had the surf/turf special, which was cooked to perfection. Also had a drink that was layered, I don't recall the name, but it had ginger in it. Delicious. Someone else in my party had the lamb shank, also delicious. For appetizers we got the oysters and mussels - perfect. No complaints here, definitely a neighborhood gem."

"A place you need to visit at least once for its historical significance. Very old-world Washingtonian with all the politicians' pictures filling nearly every inch of wall space. A truly elagant bar with bartenders who know how to make great classic cocktails. Good service, but the food is just OK."

"It took 30 mins for someone to take our order after sitting down (it was a 7:30 res. on a friday night). The food was pretty good. 1st course - lobster bisque (seemed a little watered down, not thick), tuna tartare (not bad). 2nd course - scallops (very large, but a few seemed a little undercooked and the chestnut puree was watered down, possibly from the scallops? it literally had streaks of water in it), rockfish (puree also needed more flavor), swordfish (it was alright, def. not worth the price compared to other comparable dishes in the area). they were nice and comped my mother's dessert bc it was my b-day, but they forgot my husband's scotch and still charged us for it (we pointed it out and the server quickly took it off)."

"We were very disappointed (party of 5). The service was fair - we had to ask for a wine list, we had to ask for water, etc. The waiter was not very attentive and it was not busy. The food was just average - not a good value for the cost. We would never eat there again or recommend it to others."

"My friends and I (all recently relocated)use OpenTable and other sites to explore many restaurants in the DC metropolitan area. So we took advantage of the 30% deal for Occidental to see if it would be worth returning to (one must always have 5 staple restaurants they'd bring guests in the future). I enjoyed the variety and creativity of the menu, especially the lavender lime soda. I found the lobster mashed potatoes to have that same spirit of creativity but not flavor, and it was my only disappointment of the night. My New York Strip was prepared an exceptional medium rare and the blue cheese crusting was very light, not overwhelming the taste of an extremely enjoyable steak. In the future I'd like to return and enjoy the patio."
