Diner Reviews
  • "I had lunch reservations with a famous NY Make-up artist. He arrived first and they told him there was no seating available. I told them that I had reservations and they finally seated us. The venue is tiny - the photos on their website make it look huge. Tables are tiny and uncomfortable. Service took forever. It was early spring and the temperature inside the restaurant was extremely/ uncomfortably warm. They took our drink order and app order then forgot about us. They came back an hour later and asked if we wanted dessert and we told them we haven't even ordered our meal yet!"

  • "This place gets you in the Theater District, but isn't too close to Times Square. The short ribs on sugar cane skewers were fantastic! Definitely worth recommending."

  • "Everyone was very polite but the overpriced drinks were weak at best. Food was tasty but we did have an issue with the food not being hot which was fixed immediately."

  • "The 3 of us enjoyed our meals. There is a prix fix pre theater menu which is well worth trying. We were eating at the peak of pre- theater dinner. Restaurant's noise level is quite high. The staff tries to please as I asked for something not on the menu. Unfortunately it came out from the kitchen wrong. They were very apologetic. Thought I'd be sitting there til my friends finished dinner but the right entree came out lightning fast. Massamun curry had just the right spice level. My friend enjoyed his beef special. My girlfriend has a sensitive palate and she thought the vegetable delight had too much of a kick to it. If you're ordering it and have such a taste then tell the kitchen to go light on the chillies."

  • "Enjoyed a very nice dinner with friends following a Saturday matinee. Drinks at the bar were well prepared and service was appropriately attentive. We enjoyed a table upstairs with an open view to the street. Nice ambiance. Our waitress was excellent. Attentive and anticipated our needs. Mixed reviews on the appetizers. The calamari was VERY good and a different preparation than the usual fried calamari . The chicken satay was a bit overlooked but a nice flavor. The best tasting dinner based on this group of six diners, was the chicken cashew. We sampled three deserts and enjoyed all. Would recommend this restaurant."

  • "Very good Thai food in a nice environment. This restaurant is convenient to the theater district, located on 9th Ave. Just north of 45th street."

  • "Our server was very friendly and attentive. However, the food was very disappointing. Of five who ate there, only two were happy. The food was either very bland or over-salted. It was much better when it was the Ember Room. We will not go back."

  • "Service was friendly and efficient, and were were both very pleased with our meal. I was torn between two menu items, and asked our server for his recommendation. I ended up with the cashew chili chicken, which was fantastic. We shared the salt & pepper shrimp appetizer, also delicious. My husband enjoyed his meal (don't see it on their menu online, but it was duck with wide noodles.) Portions were plentiful, and we sadly did not have enough room to try any dessert. Lots of interesting mixed drinks on this menu, we tried two and they were both great. The restaurant is pleasantly themed, and tables are not nearly as close together as we often see in the city. The bathrooms were quite clean and fairly spacious -- always a pleasant surprise."

  • "Calamari appetizer was phenomenal. We all had the Chilean sea bass in chili glaze and it was great. Our second time here and whenever we're in town we will come again."

  • "I went here for my birthday on a Friday night. There were just four of us but we had an excellent time. The decor was beautiful and what enticed me to make a reservation. I showed up early and got a drink at the bar. I got the figatini which was very sweet. The waiter was very friendly and helpful with great suggestions. We got a few appetizers and everyone's main dishes were all delicious. The portions were big but not over bearing. My fish was cooked beautifully. It took a while to get the bill taken care of but other than that, it was a great experience. I will definitely go back."

  • "This was both an excellent ambience as well as food experience. Not your typical Thai restaurant, Obao offered an excellent menu at reasonable prices. It was very clean and the staff was extremely knowledgeable. I would definitely frequent this establishment more often."

  • "The food was tasty and savory from the appetizers to the main entrees. I recommend the grilled squid for appetizer and the thin sliced Vietnamese pork chop for the main course. Service was really good. Staff was attentive. And they never rushed us. The decor was minimalistic which i like. I highly recommend Obao."

  • "Great Thai place. Went here with my DW and we both loved it. The food was so authentic and flavorful. It was definitely by far the best Thai restaurant I went to in NYC. We had the grilled eggplant and vegetable dumpling as apps and both dishes were really good. I had grilled sea bass whole and it was delicious. DW had a chicken dish with sticky rice. The most original take on chicken I ever seen. We ordered a bottle of South African Syrah and it actually worked with food really well. The servers were very attentive. The prices were great for a midtown, close to theater district location. Definitely recommend."

  • "The food was okay. I have had better. My husband enjoyed his meal, the shrimp clay pot. I had the shrimp pad thai. For appetizers, we had the sugar cane skewers and the shrimp roll. The skewers could have been cooked a bit longer, but the roll was good, especially when dipped in the sauce."

  • "I recently moved to the area and found Obao on a list of place for NYC's restaurant week. Upon entering the restaurant I must say I was very impress with the decor. We sat up stairs which i perfered since we were away from the foot traffic. The drawback of the evening was definitely the service. We saw our server at least 1 time and that was to order and when we did need her she would not give us time to take everyone's request. She would just take one person's requests and run off and we would not see her for the rest of the night. The other tables were have issues with her too. My meal was tasty it was the spicy seafood dish but my friend's meal smelled lke feet and was not at all apetizing. I give this place a solid C."

  • "The food was spectacular but the service was a little ehhhhh. The tables were really close together which I understand but I think the lighting should have been dimmer if you are practically sitting right on top of your neighbor. If you love great food and aren't afraid of going nearly drink less the whole meal you should definitely dine."

  • "All desserts listed on menu were not available. Appetizers were not worth the prices they were charging. The staff was helpful and pleasant. The restaurant had a great atmosphere."

  • "It was impossible to get anyone's attention without waving your hands to flag someone down to place your order. They also infrequently checked on you to see if you needed anything else. The food was spectacular and would go back for food and cocktails alone. You certainly can't be in a rush though."

  • "Dined here before. We were on time for our reservation and seated promptly. Took a friend here who was visiting from Singapore. He had the lobster pad thai..very spicy (although we were told it was only "medium" spice)...but he loved it! Wait staff was friendly but we had to wait around a bit to get service for refills of our water glasses, etc. Not easy to flag them down as they did not look around the room to see who may be trying to get their attention. When we did get their attention, they were polite and accommodating. Great seating! In the corner upstairs with a window view! Didn't feel rushed at all while dining. Aside from the slight glitch in trying to get their attention for minor requests, we enjoyed our dining experience!"

  • "Started with cocktails which tasted fresh and natural. Yum! Then had tender and tasty cubed steak, amazing chicken dish, and yummy noodle dish. Finished with spiced apple cake. Service was very friendly. The whole staff was welcoming. Can't wait to return!"

  • "My boyfriend and I came here for a Friday night date night. I would highly recommend making reservations because the place was packed when we got there at 7 pm. I loved the ambiance, service and food. I don't typically like spicy food but LOVED all the spicy choices I made. I would definitely go back!"

  • "I have been trying to get to this restaurant on several occasions because the reviews seem pretty good, but had to cancel earlier reservations. Made it this time, but was a little disappointed. The restaurant week meal menu was actually more expensive than ordering the identical items from the regular menu. The food was okay but based on the meals I've had at other Vietnamese and Thai restaurants, I'd say it was a little better than "fair" yet not what I would rank as "good." We were seated upstairs which was less noisy than downstairs. However, the service and the ambiance were good to very good."

  • "Great Asian Fusion, Vietnamese, Thai, all of the above. Love the spareribs wrapped around sugar cane. The chicken with sticky rice and papya salad is huge and delicious. Also the beef salad and the duck noodles. Can't wait to go back to try more dishes. Great for pre-theater."

  • "good place to go before a show in times square. Food was good ans good presentation and the wait staff was very helpful, Just wish restaurants would separate gluten from wheat."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Drinks were better than the food. The spare ribs on sugar cane were the best part. It was very noisy, with very loud pop music playing, could barely have a conversation with the person across the table."

  • "Beautiful place - close to the theater and participating in Restaurant week so we thought we'd try out a new place. The food was mediocre at best. The appetizer was flavorless, which in a Thai restaurant seems like a crime. Our meals looked lovely but again, lacking in flavor. Desert was the best part of the whole meal. I would recommend starting with a small plate and seeing if you like that before ordering a whole lot of food at this place. it is beautiful inside and the servers are great."

  • "Lunch special daily from 12-4pm, appetizer + main course only $8, I have been there for 4 times.....what a great value."

  • "Had the valentine's day prixe fix menu which was a good bang for the buck, and would definitely go back to try the rest of the menu. The food was tasty, flavorful and interesting. The salt and pepper shrimp was delicious! Really liked the decor of the place, the dim lights and cute lanterns make it very romantic and exotic. The place smells of delicious dishes and they are true to their word when they describe a dish as spicy!"

  • "We had a wonderful llunch at Obao. And what a deal! $8 lunch special includes a starter and an entree! Try the pork belly, eggplant and spare ribs on a sugar cane. Outstanding! Drinks were great too! We had lunch on a Saturday afternoon pre -theater so it was quiet but would guess that it is busy and fun at night! Would definately go back."

  • "We used to come here when it was Ember Room and it is basically the same - decor identical and most of the menu. They dropped the chocolate spare ribs which had been one of my favorites. Other than that very happy as always."

  • "The food was very very good as were the drinks. Our only vice with this place is that the air conditioning is whack! Apparently we were sat in the back corner under the vent. All of us literally put our sweaters on and off around 4 or 5 times. No exaggerating. When it got cold, it got really cold, and when it got hot it got really hot. Perhaps if you don't sit in that corner you'll be fine, but if you do be prepared to experience the climate change every 10 or 15 minutes."

  • "I have been to this restaurant twice and my experience has been the same. The food is delicious and flavorful, the workers are knowledgable of the food and drinks, and the dessert was delicious. Service was great and prices are reasonable for the great portions that they serve."
