Diner Reviews
  • "We went for restaurant week. The calamari and padthai was amazing. Drinks were great, but the noise level coming from next door was a little distracting. Overall a great experience."

  • "The appetisers were delicous. Entrees were hearty and tasty. We had the coconut ice creams and fried bananas for desserts which was refreshing."

  • "Great food, great service - particularly pre-theatre. The wine was good, and at a very reasonable price."

  • "We discovered this gem a couple of months ago on a rainy day in the theater district. We were pleasantly surprised on the quality and authenticity of the food. We were back this weekend with friends and were not disappointed. The bar drinks are inventive. The food is high quality and plentiful."

  • "Pleasant little restaurant with imaginative dishes that are still affordable considering how close this place is to Theater District. I take guests from time to time, and always positive comments."

  • "We ate at Obao on 6/28/14. We had a reservation, but the hostess was curt. Once we were seated, things improved. The food was very good-- great flavors good options for the vegetarian in our group. Service was good. Background music was energetic, but had a pulsing beat that did not stop, as if the soundtrack was on a continuous loop, and we had to shout above it. Nothing relaxing about dining here, but the food was good enough that we would go back, just not with more than one person, because it was easier to talk to the person next to us than it was to talk with the person across the table."

  • "Fab appetizers, easy to share. Great wait staff. Fun ambiance. Downstairs is a lively bar scene--upstairs easier for conversation. Have the ribs on sugar cane and salt and pepper shrimp!"

  • "The rest of the meal was not as exciting, but decent solid fare. We ordered one meal off the prix fixe, so we had summer rolls, red curry crispy duck, and really unappetizing panna cotta. I ordered the sea bass, which was buttery and yummy, but kind of small for the price. And also ordered the Figatini, not bad. But the restaurant has a great interior, and the service was nice."

  • "I started with the Tom Yum Gai soup, and was surprised by the large portion. It was tasty and flavorful. The main course of the traditional Pad Ka Prow with fried tofu was also very good. The fried tofu was a bit overdone, but the rest of the dish, including vegetables and broth were delicious. Service and reception were friendly and attentive."

  • "Great ambience with FIFA World Cup!!! Wonderful food with great service. Had a great time with my family."

  • "This little Thai restaurant is great for pre-theater. The food is very tasty and light, so you won't fall asleep during the play; and the prices are very reasonable so you can afford the theater tickets. Even without the theater this is a great place for an informal meal at any time."

  • "Had the opportunity this past weekend to visit OBAO. We found them while looking for dining spot before the theater. The food was outstanding, the service attentive and prompt, without being fawning. We had several great entres and apps and loved the restuarant. My only regret is that we did not get to eat upstairs, it looks like a wonderful spot. KUDOS to the kitchen and the front of the house on food and service well done."

  • "Dinner started off really good. The food came at a good pace, the recommendations were spot on, but the caveat was when the meal was ending. There were too many servers wanting to fill our water glass, trying to take away our dishes that we were still working on and basically hovering over us. Overall, we would definitely go back, the food was pretty good and other than the annoyance at the end, the meal was very enjoyable."

  • "I was impressed with ambience. Once my order was placed, the food arrived within minutes and was very tasty. I was disappointed with the pineapple juice at the bar, found a strand of hair in it and the hostess was not clear in telling us what drinks were included for happy hour at our table. I found the food to be good value for the money."

  • "Obao may get crowded at night, but I was there after the lunch rush. Food was delicious, and the restaurant is much more spacious and comfortable than it appears from the outside. On of the best value-for-expense meals I had on this trip to NYC."

  • "Stopped in with a few friends for lunch and it is really a cute place inside. The lunch special menu had a lot of interesting options. The service as very fast, and I would go back when I'm craving Thai food."

  • "Everything I expect from a restaurant was exceeded beyond my expectations. Attentive staff, great appetizers, delicious entrees, the beautiful ambiance, close to the theater district, reasonably priced. I love Thai, so this is my spot. Make it yours!"

  • "This was our first time at Obao. Staff was very good - almost all Thai. Menu seemed very authentic, and was quite varied. Service staff was very attentive, frequently topping off water. It did seem to take longer than normal for the check to arrive - but that's probably due to the fact that we are Americans! Of interest to many readers, prices were very reasonable for excellent meals."

  • "I went on a Tuesday night at 8pm and it was quite packed. We thoroughly enjoyed the carefully crafted cocktails - spring emotions and fig-a-tini. We ordered the salt and pepper shrimp app, penang curry chicken and the short ribs kalbi. All of the food was really good."

  • "Without a doubt one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. The pad Thai was uniquely different from any I've ever had before, and is an experience not to be missed. The chicken satay skewer appetizer was absolute perfection. The decor is breathtaking, elegant without being snooty or presumptuous. The staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating. Booking through Open Table was fast and easy, adjusting the time of our reservation later just as much so; no wait at all, in the door a couple of minutes early, still got whisked straight to our table. Full marks. Could not have been better. We will be back, and soon."

  • "Can't beat the $8 lunch even on weekends. However, do not go for a quick bite. Sat own for a 1 15 reservation. Waited 15 minutes for someone to acknowledge us. Table that was seated next to us left in frustration. We had 3pm theatre tots so had plenty of time. AYCD on Sunday brunch is only mimosas .. Not the overpriced cocktails. Food was just OK. Coffee was horrible. Biggest complaint is when I arrived I used the restroom. Restaurant was still empty. Told server no toilet paper. Prior to leaving 2. 1/2 hours later ..used restroom again.. Still no toilet paper. won't be back. Lots of much better Thai in area. Rather pay a few dollars more for better service and food."

  • "Took my family here when they came to visit. The staff was so wonderfully accommodating and helpful when dealing with their numerous food allergies and questions. They were also great about our having someone in a wheelchair and even found us someplace to keep it during dinner! "

  • "The lunch deal is outstandingly good, and good value ($8 for appetizer + main!). Funky ambiance and decor. Music was a little clubby for lunchtime, but kept the place feeling energetic. Went for a meal before a matinee show and we were in and out within an hour. I also noticed they have a prix-fixe theatre menu for $25 in the evenings, looking forward to trying that in future."

  • "Long day, hungry family of foodies looking for an excellent yet adorable experience near our hotel (Intercontinental). Obao came through in spades from easy reservations to stellar food: the fried calamari, and sauteed bean sprouts were delicious. My Pho Bo (beef soup) was absolutely outstanding. Attentive service, funky atmosphere. I would come back in a heartbeat. "

  • "This place gets you in the Theater District, but isn't too close to Times Square. The short ribs on sugar cane skewers were fantastic! Definitely worth recommending."

  • "I had lunch reservations with a famous NY Make-up artist. He arrived first and they told him there was no seating available. I told them that I had reservations and they finally seated us. The venue is tiny - the photos on their website make it look huge. Tables are tiny and uncomfortable. Service took forever. It was early spring and the temperature inside the restaurant was extremely/ uncomfortably warm. They took our drink order and app order then forgot about us. They came back an hour later and asked if we wanted dessert and we told them we haven't even ordered our meal yet!"

  • "Loved it. The Sugar Cane skewered Ribs were fantastic. Prices very reasonable!!! Definitely going back."

  • "Everyone was very polite but the overpriced drinks were weak at best. Food was tasty but we did have an issue with the food not being hot which was fixed immediately."

  • "The lunch special is excellent value and all of our dishes were great."

  • "The 3 of us enjoyed our meals. There is a prix fix pre theater menu which is well worth trying. We were eating at the peak of pre- theater dinner. Restaurant's noise level is quite high. The staff tries to please as I asked for something not on the menu. Unfortunately it came out from the kitchen wrong. They were very apologetic. Thought I'd be sitting there til my friends finished dinner but the right entree came out lightning fast. Massamun curry had just the right spice level. My friend enjoyed his beef special. My girlfriend has a sensitive palate and she thought the vegetable delight had too much of a kick to it. If you're ordering it and have such a taste then tell the kitchen to go light on the chillies."
