Diner Reviews
  • "Would highly recommend this restaurant as the food was superb, the atmosphere calm and inviting, and the service was excellent. Will definitely return!"

  • "We were recommended by friends to go here and we were not disappointed. We all had steak, different types, and everyone remarked on the quality of the steak. We chose 3 side dishes and it was done "family style" so they would just bring on more if needed for no extra charge. We lucked out on eating here on a Sunday evening when they have a big discount on the wine list. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The quality of steak equated the top notch chain steakhouses, i.e. Morton's, Capital Grille etc."

  • "The mushroom soup was amazing! Our filets were perfectly cooked and the Mac n cheese was phenomenal. It's worth it and the steak experience is unforgettable !"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed our anniversary at Oak. Service was especially attentive, provided great recommendations, and gave us the opportunity to just "sit back and enjoy" without fretting about meal choices and wine pairings. We will certainly return for our next anniversary or other big event."

  • "We came here for our wedding anniversary. Service was excellent and the food (steaks) out of this world"

  • "Ate here for dinner w/2 girlfriends after a day sightseeing in Charleston. I had a great fresh salad w/interesting ingredients and the 5 oz. tenderloin w/bordelaise sauce on the side and truffled frites. The half side of steamed asparagus was perfectly done, not soggy and not hard. The tenderloin was absolutely perfect, done just as requested, and the truffled frites were delicious but not overpowering. One friend had the lone vegetarian dish (which she had to request made w/o the chicken broth ;-)) and my other friend had the rack of lamb -- also looked and tasted delicious, she said. Only minus point was a cappuccino which came in an Irish coffee glass and was a little weak but my friend's decaf coffee was French pressed."

  • "Great ambiance, excellent service and excellent food. A bit farther south than many well known restaurants, but worth the minimal extra trip. Valet parking makes it easy to go there. Accommodating staff. Handles large parties well. Superb steak, great seasonal dishes."

  • "One of the best meals I've ever had.. Wife had the filet and I had a New York and they were both simply fantastic. The 2 of us have had a *lot* of steaks in great restaurants all over the place and neither of us could think of one that was better than what we had at Oak. Excellent service as well."

  • "I have mixed reviews for Oak Steakhouse. My food was too salty and the pork chop was very tough and not flavorful. My husband seemed to have a better experience. The waiter was inattentive and actually quite rude. However, when the manager noticed I was not enjoying my dinner he came over and apologized and we were not charged for it. As we were leaving he made a special effort to apologize again. We were at the door getting ready to leave and he came down and presented us with a gift card and invited us back to try them again next time we are in Charleston."

  • "With the exception of the ambience The Oak was a huge dissappointment. Dry aged steak, in my opinion was NOT, in fact dry aged. It did not have the distinctive flavor one expects from a dry aged piece of meat. AND, what's worse, the steak was very tough. As a side note, I have been in the meat business for over 50 years, so I think it would be fair to assume I know what I'm talking about."

  • "Food and service were excellent and we weren't shunned for bringing our 8 yr old (who thought it was better than McDonalds, now there's a compliment!)."

  • "Food was delicious. I ordered fish and staff was very accommodating of my dairy free request. Favors mingled superbly. My husbands's chicken was equally well prepared."

  • "Oak is comparable to Halls on the other side of the city, but is varied in the other offerings than steak. Had the filet mignon which was well prepared. The wait staff goes out of their way to to explain the CAB designation, and the quality of the cut is evident abeit pricey. The menu is ala carte as we had the asparagus which came out larger than I would have liked but prepared well considering the size of the spears and the lobster/shrimp mac and cheese which had great flavor but would have liked a few more pieces of lobster and shrimp. Appetizers where sizeable for shrimp cocktail (6 large prawns) and broiled scallops ( 2 large). Finished with dessert for both of us. I had a cocktail (martini) and a house merlot with dinner $186"

  • "We have been going to the Oak Steak House ever since they opened about 9 years ago, and although we only go once a year, it is always a treat. This year we were not overwhelmed by the ribeye steaks we chose, but they were delicious, none the less."

  • "The staff is top notch. The food is out of this world. The ambiance is one of a kind. We keep coming back. It's our favorite!"

  • "I've eaten at many steak houses and this is one of the best. We had filet and lobster, both of which were cooked to perfection. The fries were a reason enough to return. Bartender made good wine recommendations."

  • "This was our third visit to Oak, as it has become our favorite restaurant when visiting Charleston. This was our first Sunday dining experience, and we were thrilled to learn bottles of wine were half off on this day. The wine list is great, and this gave us the opportunity to explore a new wine. Jerrod was an excellent waiter. He understood we wanted a leisurely meal and allowed that to happen. The food is excellent. The dry aged ribeye is an experience, with a nutty, smooth flavor. The filet melts in your mouth. The truffled pommes frites are an excellent side dish. Our dining experience was excellent, as expected. The Oak is well worth the money, and we'll definitely visit when we're in Charleston again."

  • "We were seated on the third floor which was absolutely charming. The room didn't have the heavy feel of a typical steakhouse. The steak was cooked to perfection, and each side was delicious. The staff was extremely courteous and unpretentious. I would highly recommend this restaurant !"

  • "We have dined at Oak on numerous occasions and although there are many many outstanding dining options in downtown Charleston, this is our favorite. We are fortunate to be locals and fortunate that we can dine at Oak whenever we wish. From the courtesy on the phone when they confirm your reservation to the greeting when you arrive, you know they are glad to see you. The service is impeccable - non intrusive but always nearby. The food really is excellent. Could be the best steaks in town. Desserts are lovely, all made on the premises, and creatively served. Creme brûlée is the house specialty, but the white chocolate mousse and homemade sorbet sampler are also delish!"

  • "My wife and I always go to Oak for our special occasions. This time it was our 41st wedding anniversary. As usual our expectations we met. The food and wine were memorable and the service, as always was exceptional. Located in the heart of Charleston on Broad Street, I can't imagine it getting any better. Thank you to the entire staff!"

  • "Food was exceptional and the steaks were prepared and cooked just right however the noise level and atmosphere was too loud for our romantic occasion and the price of the food was extremely overpriced. There are other restaurants in the area with the same atmosphere with lower prices and get the same quality of food."

  • "Best steaks, great atmosphere, the sides were amazing. Everything about this restaurant is great!"

  • "Started with cheese selection and Caesar salads. I order tilefish which was overlooked and under-seasoned. My husband had a filet and he left about half on the plate. Did have a delicious chocolate cake for dessert. Our server was nice but slow. Overall the place seemed pretty dated."

  • "We enjoyed wonderful oysters on the half shell and a beautiful filet and lamb. We also enjoyed Pomme Frits and a really tasty creamed spinach. Everyone there seemed to enjoy their food and were having a good time."

  • "From the perfectly cooked steaks to the delicious sides & salads, Oak is one of the best dining experiences in Charleston. Not just the best beef but good variety of seafood, lamb, chicken & even a vegetarian entree. Excellent every time we go. Dave our server & Michelle the manager ensure we have a memorable meal & fantastic service."

  • "From the great ambiance to the amazing wine, food and service, this was a special night thanks to this wonderful restaurant. Not too pretentious, the waiters were spot on and eager to engage and please. The lamb chops were awesome and the Sunday night half price bottles of wine a special surprise. Truly a great dinner made special by the service and food."

  • "This was not our first Oak experience and will not be our last! The food and service are wonderful. Our server, Herb, had great suggestions and answered all of our questions. Filet was cooked to request and portions were large. The manager came around to everyone's table to make sure all were enjoying their experience. Complimentary apple muffins were given to us when we left which we enjoyed the next morning (delicious!). The only thing that would have been better was a table more near the large windows to see the lovely street view like we had the first time."

  • "My husband is a huge fan of steak (whose isn't??) and I wanted to take him somewhere I knew would cook it correctly and actually be worth paying a high price for. He was totally impressed and said he had one of the best steaks of his life :)"

  • "This was a wonderful spot for a special occasion dinner. The food was excellent, especially the oysters and steak. The choice of steak sauces was very good, too. The lemon cheesecake was light and excellent."

  • "I had the chopped salad and the Butcher's plate. The lemon vinaigrette dressing was very good and the selection on the BP was solid also. I didn't like the pate, but that's more of a 'me' issue, since I'm not a fan in general. All in all, it was a solid meal in an attractive location. The service was professional and the bartender was was personable and efficient."

  • "I've been here a few times but Had to come and check out the newly added CAB Prime Dry aged steaks from Master Purveyors. We did apps of Steak Tartare and seared scallops. The steak was salty & tender with a certain mustardiness to the aioli and the requisite quail egg perched atop. The scallops were sweet and briny and contrasted nicely with the Brussels sprouts. Bibb and Tatsoi with goat cheese salads were great salad courses. My wife loved the carved tenderloin frites and of course the Dry aged bone in Rib was phenomenal. We paired all this with smokey bacon mac and cheese and had the sommelier pair a glass with each course. Espresso, Capp, Limoncello, and chocolate cake to finish--then a deep coma-like sleep for about 18 hours."

  • "Oak Steakhouse has wonderful steaks and even better ambiance and service. We had the best table in the house, but we've even had a superior dining experience when we've eaten at the bar. We hope to come back again and again!"

  • "The ambiance is good. Service was very good. Thought the steaks were just average. Mine came brutally rare and cold as if it had been under a lamp for too long Even though I ordered medium rare Sent it back and it came back at least hot but still just dead raw and cold in middle Sides were just average. Prices were same as a Manhattan steak house but not at all the same quality as Hall's here in Charleston."
