Diner Reviews
  • "This place is close to Tenderloin, not a good place to have dinner."
    Dined on 4/16/2014
  • "They were having some kind of office party in one half of the restaurant but still serving dinner in the other half. The noise was deafining and we almost left. The service was not great, either, and the food was slow coming out. This is my second time here and I will not return"
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "The service was prompt, efficiency, but friendly. The food was delivered in a timely manner and with attention to the timing we wanted for the different courses. The food was very good and nicely presented. I asked for the medium spice level, but I found that was a bit too hot. Next time I'll ask for a milder spice level. Given some of the reviews especially about the level of service, I was anticipating problems, but the overall dining experience was really quite good."

  • "Food was really good. But the waitresses were really really slow... Took over a half our to get a drink. And the bathrooms are ridiculous. You have to walk through a weird alley way with creepy construction guys there. Did not like that. Happy hour menu online was not the same as the happy hour they had in the restaurant or bar. That was annoying because I had planned out what I wanted ahead of time because we were in a rush. The mussels they served made our table smell like a homeless man which was gross and luckily we were almost done so we could leave. A for the food and the location but other than that it was mediocre. Probably won't go back."

  • "Decent bar at good prices. Food was decent and fast but service was not."
    Dined on 3/31/2014
  • "The service was so bad it was annoying. Appetizers were tasteless and greasy - chicken wings and shrimp. My lamb was a hockey puck, companion's pork was so hot it was uneatable. Why are there TV's everywhere - totally doesn't go with the ambience, which is nice? Nope - not for me."

  • "We recently celebrated a retirement/birthday lunch at O3, and had a very good time. The food came up quickly, was hot, and the portion sizes were huge. So come hungry for lunch"

  • "I attended O3 wih a group of friend's prior to a show. While th food was good the servie was poor. Our beverages were not refilled, this included water. We brough bottles of wine and was charged a corkage fee but had to pour our own bottles. Needless to say, I will not return to the establishmet"

  • "We were there at 11:00 a.m. for a very early lunch, not quite sure what to expect. What we didn't expect, though, was the freshness of the food, the abundance of food on the plate, the wonderful seasonings, the serene atmosphere. This is a bistro to be highly recommended for any occasion, but especially before or after a performance at the nearby venues."

  • "Pleasant ambiance, good food and service and convenient for pre-concert activities near civic center."

  • "Having been here several times, I can only say that things have gone downhill. Mostly around the service, knowledge, experience and front of the house. The food is still good, but pricey for the level of service that comes with it. From the host to the bartender to our server, I felt like I was at a kids place vs. a nicer restaurant where our bill was $110. Our server knew nothing about the menu, made no attempt to explain anything when we asked and never showed up after food was placed at our table. We weren't able to find anyone to order a second drink, desert was not offered, and it was as if we just needed to leave-so we did! For the area & for the decent food, this is a good place, but don't expect experienced staff or quality service."

  • "Gorgeous modern place. Lots of choices on menu. Everything we ate was very good. (Not exceptional enough for 5 stars -- but no complaints.) Service staff tried hard -- some problems with English. Very convenient to Davies Hall and the Opera House. We'll be back again."
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "Shocked to see the host wearing jeans and an untucked shirt. Fish sauce smell wafted through the air. Not pleasant. The waitresses were very sweet, however jeans should be banned from a restaurant that is trying to be top notch. The food was okay. Portions are large. Honey Duck was a huge disappointment. Had that previously cooked and warmed up poultry flavor. Yellow curry was okay. NASTY restrooms. Had to walk past the kitchen which was a tummy-turning sight. Not what I expected for a dinner before the symphony."

  • "Everything out of that kitchen is exceptional and the portions are generous. My only "dings" on my first visit were that the wine pours were on the small side (they we're definitely bigger pours this time) and they had the tvs on in what otherwise was a swanky dining area(fortunately the tvs are only on in the bar now, not the dining area!) so everything was terrific. This is now our "go to" place any time we are going to Davies Hall!"

  • "My husband and I both loved on our meal at O3, as did the folks sitting next to us...and we all had completely different things. The noodle soup was full of flavor and perfectly cooked strips of chicken breast. The pumpkin curry was more subtly flavored but also scrumptious. Presentation also was really nice, from a giant asymmetrical bowl for my noodle soup to the gourd in which my husband's curry was served. Decor was nice, but not stuffy. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive without being too in your face. One problem, though: two giant TV screens in the dining area. Fine for the bar, but the dining room? Really diminishes what's otherwise a very nice interior. Also, the location is very good for pre-Symphony or pre-Ballet dining."

  • "We have dined here twice and loved the food. The husband says the duck noodle soup is the best he has ever had. The medium curries are delicious and full of tender chicken or seafood, and crispy veggies with broth rich with coconut milk flavor. Happy hour bar during the week seemed popular. We tried a desert of fried ice cream - basically a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream wrapped in a crispy, sugary dough that resembles a doughnut. What is not to like about doughnuts and ice cream? attentive service without hovering. We will be back."

  • "The first problem was with the service staff who spoke English poorly to the extent they didn't understand us and we didn't understand them. The really tried, though, so I'm sorry to be giving them such a poor rating. Because of this problem I think the waiter misunderstood "medium spice" with "medum rare." My salmon was raw in the middle so I had to send it back. Instead of just cooking that piece, I think they cooked an entirely new piece, which took forever. My 2 companions were finished with their meal before I was even served. We had an 8 o'clock performance to make. The food, mine (when I finally got it) and my companions', was absolutely delicious. I'd like to give them another try."

  • "This restaurant is very convenient to the symphony and opera house. Having said that, I wish the food was a little better...I would rate it only so-so after having the seafood salad. My friend had the starter variety plate and felt the same way."

  • "The four of us were blown away by the consistent quality and deliciousness and portion size of every dish we ordered. If you like Thai, you will love this place. The soups, appetizers, entrees are all first rate. Fresh, swiftly prepared, richly flavored and absolutely delicious. Only down note is the wine Markups are high and the pours are small...they are definitely squeezing five glasses out of a bottle. I ordered a glass of LaMerika Pinot noir at $13, and it sells for $9.00 bottle at World Market. Also, they are a popular lunch place in civic center, and have tvs in the otherwise sophisticated dining area. They really should turn the tvs OFF during dinner....it takes away from the classy ambience."

  • "Was surprised to see the change to all Thai vs the Asian Fusion. TV monitors now in dining room so not a before symphony or opera place to dine. Food was ok Thai food, but have had better. Waitress was delightful. My food had to go back as too rare and cool vs requested medium to medium rare and then got lamb chops that were half as thick and well done but hot. Others liked their food. Wait staff dressed neatly but host needs to dress up more to match wait staff."

  • "In reading about, and viewing photos of, this restaurant, one would be led to believe it would be an appropriate place for a group of 4 to dine before the ballet....upscale, attractive and sophisticated. Nothing prepared us for the experience of walking into a brightly lit restaurant with 3 HUGE TV sets hovering over us. When asked about the level of spice in one of the things we ordered we were told...not spicy at all. The dish arrived with a bowl of soy sauce literally floating in green chiles. Likewise, another dish ordered "mild" which had a jalapeño seed "hit" about every third bite. We ordered Chardonnay. They brought Cabernet. We won't go back..."

  • "The Fusion menu has completely changed; not for the better."

  • "Five of us shared an appetizer, two salads and three entrees. It was a perfect amount of food. Especially good was the salmon claypot curry. Spicy means spicy here!"

  • "Before (or after) the opera, symphony or other event, O3 is convenient, serves delicious Thai food, and provides attentive service. Because many local business men and women frequent this restaurant at noon, reservations are important."
    Dined on 1/8/2014
  • "We picked this restaurant because it was within walking distance to the SF Opera House. We ordered 3 main dishes, the lamb chops, lemon grass salmon and sizzling seafood platter. The lamb was the best of the 3 with a light creamy curry sauce; the salmon had a very similar lamb chop sauce but it came well done despite the fact we asked for rare; lastly the sizzling seafood platter was way too spicy to enjoy. The waitress did not seem to have a good command of the English language and did not communicate well when asked about different dishes or she did not care. The maitre'd was very helpful upon entering the restaurant when we told him we had a 7:30 show time. We may go back to try other dishes if we are in the area again."

  • "First of all let me say the food was good but that's about it the service was so bad that I will not return. When we were seated we waited about ten minutes and then the waiter came and took the order of another couple first who had been seated after us,however we were served our food first then when our drinking water was poured there was something floating in it so we asked for a different glass with more water which was fine the second time around. Our waiter never once checked on us and we had to hunt her down for the check, and she had an attitude when we asked for change her response was "they dont have any". Needless to say I will not be returning I can go somewhere else with just as good food and service for my money!"

  • "It's OK to have a TV in the bar area, but there are 2 TVs in the main dining area. They are muted, but sports channel video is distracting. It would be more romantic without the TVs. A few months ago the menu changed from Asian fusion to straight Thai. Excellent Thai food, with sizable portions. The Tom Yum soup is very fresh and tasty."

  • "We came here before the theater excited for Thai and thinking the location was great. The atmosphere upon first glance was great. Care had gone into decor decisions and it had a hipper vibe. Quickly I noticed little things like smudged windows, tables stacked in corner. Anyway, drinks were horrible and they were missing ingredients, food order was wrong, apps never arrived. Different staff kept coming over but problems took a while to get fixed. The food was flavorful but heavy with viscose sugary sauce for cucumber salad among other things. It's convenient to theaters but otherwise I would not go back."

  • "Modern decor, high ceilings, convenient & easy walk to Opera House. Started with drinks and a salad. Almost finished the salad & still no drinks.Moderately busy. Husband got the Sweet and Spicy cocktail which had a weird kind of overpowering cleaning fluid smell - undoubtedly the mango. Tasted good but the aroma was a bit off-putting. I had the Bell Pepper Margarita -fine. The calamari salad was yummy with excellent spices albeit a bit rubbery. We shared the Thai Fried rice w/ shrimp and mussels + The Mango Trout - both very good. Overall pretty good but there isn't really any personality to the place. It's kind of like a zillion other trendy spots with so-so service but not much human connection. Do you know what I mean?"

  • "Appetizer combination plate especially good. Service good, except for people who came after we did who had to wait quite a while for ordering and then for the food. Also, ordered a Gibson before dinner and the waitress obviously had no idea what that was, though she pretended as though she did, and the bar tender certainly should have known. In any case, I did get some gin, but no onions."

  • "Wine very overpriced; food too salty; some dishes too spicy even when we asked for mild. But an attractive place, with good servicel"
    Dined on 11/23/2013
  • "When we arrived we had about 1 hour for dinner. Our drinks and orders came immediately, as did the check when we were done. Fab food, though we asked for it to be milder than usual. The quail is a must have--yummy!"

  • "Went here to eat before going to the Opera. Ordered appetizers to share and happy hour drinks. First time here and loved it! Will definitely go back again."

  • "Except for 3 other people who was in the bar, I was the only other customer in the restaurant. My reservation was for 5:15PM, but my business meeting ended early and they sat me early as I expressed my time constrained schedule due to a flight and the need to catch a 6:30PM BART train for SFO. I was promptly served with a Singha and proceeded to order spring rolls for an appetizer and Seafood stirfry special which was prepared wonderfully with green peppercorn bunches. The food & service was great. The next time I'm in the Civic Center area for business with a hankering for Thai food, I know where to go."

  • "Since 03 changed its menu from fusion-y to more traditional Thai, the food is not consistently well prepared and is often bland. Still, it's a nice place to enjoy lunch or cocktails."
    Dined on 8/16/2013
  • "It's a nice restaurant with pretty large portions. It would be a great place to go before a play or symphony, but the neighborhood is a little sketchy so go with a group."
    Dined on 11/7/2013
  • "This was a return visit to the restaurant. The menu had changed with many more choices, which may be the cause of lower rating. The calamari appetizer lover said it was still great. Other dishes, such as the Chicken Salad Wrap, were less successful. In particular, the menu stated butter, not iceberg, lettuce. Service was very slow and the server had to come back because her notes about our order were unclear and she had to return to ask questions."

  • "O3 is easy to get to by BART (we came from East Bay) and only a short walk to all the Civic Center venues. The Thai food they offer is both traditional and innovative and beautifully presented. Unlike some Thai restaurants they offer each diner options on the level of "heat" they want for their dishes - wonderful for us who love the flavors (mangos, honey, cilantro, etc.) but not the burn. Service was very good although there were a couple of miscues -- entrée coming at same time as appetizer."

  • "Went on Sunday evening right when they opened (after an opera matinee), with almost nobody else there. Service very friendly and accomodating. Got the "Thai beef jerky" -- beef strips dusted with (I think) rice flour, flash fried, served over bed of crispy seaweed flakes, with chili garlic sauce; whole dish was excellent, very different from standards you see at most Thai places (satay, yum nuer). Then did the curry tasting, selected red with beef, yellow with chicken, and the green coconut shrimp. Strongly recommend the latter -- served in a coconut; fresh young coconut flesh absorbs flavor from curry, while tempering the spice. For dessert, sticky rice with a perfectly ripe mango. Only complaint: onions in yellow curry were undercooked."

  • "We enjoyed our meal, felt the service was good. Especially good cocktails, and great location in relation to the symphony. Just would have much more enjoyed the ambience without so many tv screens flashing from each wall."
