Diner Reviews
  • "Great Sunday all you can eat buffet! Service was excellent and the ambience was quiet and relaxing. Will definitely go back in the future."

  • "In the past, I've had several very nice meals at the Nubar -- good food, great service and wonderful wine. Unfortunately, my experience on July 4th was not as stellar, primarily because of the food. I ordered my favorite chicken dish, but when it arrived I was greatly disappointed. It took longer than expected which surprised me given that I was the only patron in the place -- maybe due to the rain. The chicken and potatoes were not just cold but tasted off -- almost as if they were frozen leftovers from the previous night. The panna cote dessert and the wine were excellent as was the service. I still recommend this restaurant even with the disappointing food. I simply attribute it to an off night."

  • "Good ambiance. Fresh, creative food. We tried the lamb turnover for appetizer, and found it quite flavorful and interesting. The salmon was fine, whereas the gnocchi was really superb: made just right and mixed with delectable veggies and topped with copious cheese shavings."

  • "I went to Nubar with my husband for brunch. The restaurant was not busy, yet we waited for over 10 minutes for any service. We finally had to flag someone down to take a drink order. Service remained very poor for the rest of our stay, turning what should have been a quick brunch buffet to an almost 2 hour ordeal. Another couple beside us was similarly frustrated, and we noticed other customers who looked 'wealthier' were getting wonderful service. This is not a place I would ever go to again, and I will certainly tell others not to waste their time."

  • "wanted to meet cambridge-based friends at a harvard square area restaurant. needed to be vegetarian- friendly. everyone agreed that Nubar was a great selection: began with a nice bread basket; terrific bowl of gazpaco and another tasty vegetarian soup; had a wonderful vegetable flatbread and crispy truffle french fries for an appetizer. both were great warm-ups. then had a light and crispy hake fish entre, primavera gnocchi and a vegan entre. dessert was a chocolate totre and a wonderful cannoli. highly recommend. will definitely return for another meal when I want a meal/restaurant setting that stands out."

  • "My family had a wonderful Father's Day brunch! Food was delicious and plentiful. We will definitely recommend to friends and we'll be back!"

  • "We had a wonderful meal of appetizers. The standout was the polenta with wilted spinach and crispy poached egg, but everything else was delicious as well. The waitstaff was attentive and informative. We will surely go there again."

  • "... due to a party in the bar area, which made it difficult to talk at our table in the dining area. The food was good, but our waitress was abrupt and in a bad mood!"

  • "This was our first visit to Nubar and we had a pleasant dinner. Unlike many other Open Table restaurants, no amus bouche was offered before dinner. The flatbread was good, but there was no garlic in the sauce, though none was promised in the description. The bread basket was fantastic with a nice array of tasty rolls! We shared a salad, and the kitchen graciously split it onto two plates. The clam roast was delicious. I would have liked a basket for the empty shells; The steak frites was grilled perfectly, and the fries were wonderfully cooked, with no pretentious sauces. The lemon panna cotta was also excellent. Service was very good, though we had a wait at the end for water and our bill, but overall a very nice place to dine!"

  • "Went with Travelzoo coupon and was pleasantly surprised. Excellent choice of food (included chicken and fish-both excellent). Service was just right. Omelet was exactly how I asked for it. My partner and I enjoyed it and would go back."

  • "Having eaten here three times in the past year, Nubar was our first choice for our anniversary celebration. We started with Lamb and Meze Plate appetizers. I was overwhelmed with the amount of food served on the Meze Plate, it was large enough for two to share. We moved on to the Duck and the Salmon entrees which were outstanding. The duck was tender and mouth watering in flavor, the organic salmon was also very flavorful. We finished our meal with a cannoli and a passionfruit sorbet. With the weather being so warm, we were able to sit outside on the terrace, but the views are less than stellar, our only complaint. May be the terrace should be screened with trellis work and vines, so the hotel guests wouldn't be spectators!"

  • "Went to Nubar and had flatbread and salt cod cakes and drinks. The flatbread was good and the cod cakes were as well. The drinks were good-not great."

  • "Nubar is a favorite of ours. Even had my son's and daughter-in-law's wedding eve get together there in the bar area. We like to sit at the high tops in the bar area for dinner -find that area even quieter and more intimate than the dining room. Even have stopped on a cold Sunday afternoon to have a snack and drinks or tea and coffee in the bar area that has a fireplace and comfy chairs. The food is inventive and tasty. There is valet parking if needed but can usually find a spot on the street if you don't mind walking a bit. If you want an active, young bar scene you won't find it at Nubar but you will find a friendly staff with classy, cozy decor and fine food. Recommend it for a mixed age group dinner or to celebrate a family event. "

  • "My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the Mother's Day brunch. The food quality and array of options really exceeded expectations. All 9 of us were raving about the desserts and the omelets all day...... My 3-year old niece couldn't get enough of the baked rigatoni dish (and the desserts). Overall, a really great experience and we'll spread the word. The valet parking right outside was also very convenient. "

  • "We ask for a table to accommodate my husband on crutches and they delivered. The space was cozy, the food from start to finish well present, yummy tasting. A unique varied menu, that was geared to any palate--very fresh and creative."

  • "For an appetizer, we got the crab cake which was divine, albeit quite small for the price. Then we ordered the Spring salad which was also yummy, but again, for this price, it was tiny as well. For the entree, we ordered the salmon which was described as being accompanied by several interesting vegetables. Well, the vegetables were a perfunctory afterthought, and should have been called a garnish! For the price point, this was ridiculous. On another note, I found a very long hair in my dinner. EWhen I brought this to th eatention of one of the staff, she replied, "That's odd no one in the kitchen has long hair." I responded, "Well, as you can see, my husband and I both have short hair, so it didn't come from us...."

  • "We went on Saturday, during dinner rush. To give the place its due, service was prompt and fairly quick, considering how packed the place was. But there was a giant group set up in the lounge by the bar, and the noise level of 40 very excited people so close to the dining area, together with loud music, made conversation impossible. Our table of 4 was helped by two different servers, which introduced a level of confusion and redundancy due to their lack of communication between each other. Food was delicious as always, but more variety would be good. Spaghetti does not a vegan dish make."

  • "Went to Nubar with friends for a birthday celebration. The food was fabulous. We all decided that this was is place we will comeback to often!"

  • "Brunch was okay. A little pricey for selection, but quality was good on certain items (bacon was tremendous). Ran out of several items and had to replace."
    Dined on 4/27/2014
  • "The omelet station was superb. Don't miss out on the fruit and french toast either. The salmon with hoisin sauce was moist and flavorful. You really can't go wrong with any option."

  • "The restaurant is really nice and fancy and food is great. The only thing is that the Brunch buffet should have been given bigger space and bigger variety of items for the price they offer it for."

  • "Friendly for group. Food is OK but far from exceptional. Noise Level rather low so good if you want to have long conversations"

  • "The experience was good, our table was not necessarily fit for two children- one is 4years old. We were also under the impression that kids under 5 years were not to be charged; at least that is what was advertised. When the bill came, our 4 year old was charged $20. We double checked the ad on getting home and it still stated the same- my husband called them, we were promised a call back from the manager since we paid cash. 4 days later we are still waiting."

  • "After many return trips to Nubar I can say it is consistently good, with good service, good food, good ambience. But nothing about it stands out as beyond good...wait...wrong...portion size. My husband and I didn't find many items on the menu that jumped out at us, but the salmon I ordered and the hake he ordered were both tasty. I know they change menus seasonally and perhaps that, and dining out of doors, will encourage us to return. Otherwise, if you're staying at the hotel or in the neighborhood this is a spot where you can't go wrong but won't walk away feeling that you've had a better than average experience."

  • "Picked this place because I was looking for a quiet spot in Cambridge. The food was not bad, but the restaurant seemed seriously understaffed and thus not very attentive (water not refilled, requests for items forgotten, etc.) For the price ($90 for two for dinner including 2 courses each and one glass of wine) it could have been better. If you're looking for a quiet spot or a place to eat alone (as this was in a hotel, there were a fair number of solo diners) and don't expect to be wowed, this could work for you."

  • "Nubar is in the Sheraton Commander just steps outside of the square. The food is great and bar--especially the cocktails-- are great. The service could be improved. Wait staff had bad timing returning the check, keeping water filled and general checking in, but Nubar is still a great meal, rarely too crowded, always slightly busy due to the hotel, and a very good value."

  • "We saw it on groupon and decided to give it a try. We went on a chilly night, so the fireplace was a great touch. We ordered the cheese plate, a chicken bacon flatbread, and porkchops with sausage. The cheese plate was tasty, especially the fresh honey. The flatbread was amazing, and the pork was decent (we both agreed that a plate of just the sausage would've been a great option though, as it was definitely the star of the dish. Our waitress was very pleasant, but service was quite slow and she could have been more attentive. All in all, we would go back, but this time we would sit in the bar part and just get drinks and one of those amazing flatbreads I think!"

  • "Anniversary dinner, great choices for my husband and a separate interesting vegan menu for me to choose from. Very unusual to have both options in such a lovely atmosphere."
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "Stylish contemporary decor and and energetic buzz from diners makes for a special occasion here. Based on a very small sampling of their menu offerings, I would recommend the fantastic beef and cabbage soup when available (why not simply call it borscht?), but keep your distance from the swordfish, which arrived overlooked but swimming in a thin, insipid broth. Great wine list to choose from. Reasonable prices."
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "I've never stayed at the Sheraton Commander, but I have had a couple of lovely meals at Nubar, and will often recommend it when people are asking for someplace to eat in Harvard that's actually quiet enough to talk in. I'm not a wine guy, but I was impressed with their selection of whiskey."

  • "I was looking for a venue that could accommodate a group of 12 in Cambridge and this was one of the few options. I was pleasantly surprised by the venue (pretty big once you go inside), but did not realize it was part of the Sheraton Commander Hotel. We were served promptly (often difficult for large parties) and the food was great. I think everyone ordered something different off the menu, but as I looked around, everyone's plate was finished. Overall, the sausage flatbread, chicken entree, and pumpkin spice cake dessert were wonderful choices, and I was happy I chose Nubar!"

  • "Went again for lunch with good friends to catch up and not be hurried through our meal. Delicious soup of the day -- split pea with chicken -- friends got their clam chowder again. Really scrumptious personal size flatbreads with gourmet ingredients. The staff are friendly and accommodating -- not intrusive -- but feel at home here. A great place away (just a few blocks) from the hustle and bustle of the square. And the gas fireplace is cozy on these damp spring days."

  • "We walked into Nubar at 4:30. Not typically a busy time, but there was no one else there. Given the location, we thought this was odd. We each ordered some of the most expensive lunches on the menu. They wouldn't let us choose from the diner menu because we were a half hour early. The haddock had no flavor, the duck flat bread sandwich turned out to be a mushroom flat bread pizza with a few scraps of duck. We should have known we were in for bad food when the waitress tried to give us her card as a house keeper. Given the prices on the menu, she must not be too busy and for good reason. Ironically, she was the best part oft he. Restraunt. She was friendly and prompt. The decor of the place is also fairly upscale."

  • "Served cold soup appetizer (Clam chowder) and general noise-level (on a Saturday night) was far too high. Additionally, we were seated in the center of the restaurant where I'm sure it was the loudest. For the prices on the menu, I expected better food than was delivered."

  • "Went here cause i had a groupon, otherwise I never heard of it or would never have gone. We chose the 3 course dinner for $33. My boyfriend also got all 3 wine pearings for $27. It was too much wine for him so i had the sweet dessert wine. All of out meals were delicious, but the porkchop was a standout."

  • "Do you have a kneejerk repulsion to hotel restaurants? Nubar will change your mind. First it is set away from the unique Sherton Commander, has its own entrance, and a convenient $10 parking/valet (with validation in the restaurant) just to the left of the front door. Inside, while a little noisy, is open, buzzing, welcoming, and leaning towards modern but in a comfortable fashion. Service was efficient, though not sophisticated. All the gourmet comfort food was prepared beautifully, using excellent quality ingredients. The wine/bar list was medium sized, not over-priced, and, well, just friendly. And friendly was the tone, with just a tad of Cantabrigian edge. ALMOST gave it 5 stars, 4.5 for sure; a pleasant surprise and find."

  • "It's a nice place- probably okay for an afterwork beer or brunch (although I haven't been for brunch). We had two signature cocktails that were very good. We had higher expectations with dinner. The food was good but unexciting. For what's served, it's pricey, but because we had a Groupon, we couldn't really complain about the value. The room was nice, and probably better designed for drinks and good conversation."

  • "First time dining experience and in general it was very good. We had two great appetizers, the sword fish pâté and a cheese plate. With the latter, usually you get a brief explanation of what is on the plate however none was offered here. In a couple of occasions this lead to momentary confusion on whom would receive which entree. Additionally, it was our responsibility to alert staff that we needed a second glass of wine. The food was quite excellent however. I had the sword fish entrée and others had the haddock and the salmon. All raved about the taste and quality. Finally, I received the wrong dessert and enjoyed it as if I ordered it however, I realize most folks would be exasperated by this time."
