Diner Reviews
  • "Picked this place because I was looking for a quiet spot in Cambridge. The food was not bad, but the restaurant seemed seriously understaffed and thus not very attentive (water not refilled, requests for items forgotten, etc.) For the price ($90 for two for dinner including 2 courses each and one glass of wine) it could have been better. If you're looking for a quiet spot or a place to eat alone (as this was in a hotel, there were a fair number of solo diners) and don't expect to be wowed, this could work for you."

  • "Nubar is in the Sheraton Commander just steps outside of the square. The food is great and bar--especially the cocktails-- are great. The service could be improved. Wait staff had bad timing returning the check, keeping water filled and general checking in, but Nubar is still a great meal, rarely too crowded, always slightly busy due to the hotel, and a very good value."

  • "We saw it on groupon and decided to give it a try. We went on a chilly night, so the fireplace was a great touch. We ordered the cheese plate, a chicken bacon flatbread, and porkchops with sausage. The cheese plate was tasty, especially the fresh honey. The flatbread was amazing, and the pork was decent (we both agreed that a plate of just the sausage would've been a great option though, as it was definitely the star of the dish. Our waitress was very pleasant, but service was quite slow and she could have been more attentive. All in all, we would go back, but this time we would sit in the bar part and just get drinks and one of those amazing flatbreads I think!"

  • "Anniversary dinner, great choices for my husband and a separate interesting vegan menu for me to choose from. Very unusual to have both options in such a lovely atmosphere."

  • "Stylish contemporary decor and and energetic buzz from diners makes for a special occasion here. Based on a very small sampling of their menu offerings, I would recommend the fantastic beef and cabbage soup when available (why not simply call it borscht?), but keep your distance from the swordfish, which arrived overlooked but swimming in a thin, insipid broth. Great wine list to choose from. Reasonable prices."

  • "I've never stayed at the Sheraton Commander, but I have had a couple of lovely meals at Nubar, and will often recommend it when people are asking for someplace to eat in Harvard that's actually quiet enough to talk in. I'm not a wine guy, but I was impressed with their selection of whiskey."

  • "I was looking for a venue that could accommodate a group of 12 in Cambridge and this was one of the few options. I was pleasantly surprised by the venue (pretty big once you go inside), but did not realize it was part of the Sheraton Commander Hotel. We were served promptly (often difficult for large parties) and the food was great. I think everyone ordered something different off the menu, but as I looked around, everyone's plate was finished. Overall, the sausage flatbread, chicken entree, and pumpkin spice cake dessert were wonderful choices, and I was happy I chose Nubar!"

  • "Went again for lunch with good friends to catch up and not be hurried through our meal. Delicious soup of the day -- split pea with chicken -- friends got their clam chowder again. Really scrumptious personal size flatbreads with gourmet ingredients. The staff are friendly and accommodating -- not intrusive -- but feel at home here. A great place away (just a few blocks) from the hustle and bustle of the square. And the gas fireplace is cozy on these damp spring days."

  • "We walked into Nubar at 4:30. Not typically a busy time, but there was no one else there. Given the location, we thought this was odd. We each ordered some of the most expensive lunches on the menu. They wouldn't let us choose from the diner menu because we were a half hour early. The haddock had no flavor, the duck flat bread sandwich turned out to be a mushroom flat bread pizza with a few scraps of duck. We should have known we were in for bad food when the waitress tried to give us her card as a house keeper. Given the prices on the menu, she must not be too busy and for good reason. Ironically, she was the best part oft he. Restraunt. She was friendly and prompt. The decor of the place is also fairly upscale."

  • "Served cold soup appetizer (Clam chowder) and general noise-level (on a Saturday night) was far too high. Additionally, we were seated in the center of the restaurant where I'm sure it was the loudest. For the prices on the menu, I expected better food than was delivered."

  • "Went here cause i had a groupon, otherwise I never heard of it or would never have gone. We chose the 3 course dinner for $33. My boyfriend also got all 3 wine pearings for $27. It was too much wine for him so i had the sweet dessert wine. All of out meals were delicious, but the porkchop was a standout."

  • "Do you have a kneejerk repulsion to hotel restaurants? Nubar will change your mind. First it is set away from the unique Sherton Commander, has its own entrance, and a convenient $10 parking/valet (with validation in the restaurant) just to the left of the front door. Inside, while a little noisy, is open, buzzing, welcoming, and leaning towards modern but in a comfortable fashion. Service was efficient, though not sophisticated. All the gourmet comfort food was prepared beautifully, using excellent quality ingredients. The wine/bar list was medium sized, not over-priced, and, well, just friendly. And friendly was the tone, with just a tad of Cantabrigian edge. ALMOST gave it 5 stars, 4.5 for sure; a pleasant surprise and find."

  • "It's a nice place- probably okay for an afterwork beer or brunch (although I haven't been for brunch). We had two signature cocktails that were very good. We had higher expectations with dinner. The food was good but unexciting. For what's served, it's pricey, but because we had a Groupon, we couldn't really complain about the value. The room was nice, and probably better designed for drinks and good conversation."

  • "First time dining experience and in general it was very good. We had two great appetizers, the sword fish pâté and a cheese plate. With the latter, usually you get a brief explanation of what is on the plate however none was offered here. In a couple of occasions this lead to momentary confusion on whom would receive which entree. Additionally, it was our responsibility to alert staff that we needed a second glass of wine. The food was quite excellent however. I had the sword fish entrée and others had the haddock and the salmon. All raved about the taste and quality. Finally, I received the wrong dessert and enjoyed it as if I ordered it however, I realize most folks would be exasperated by this time."

  • "I've only had lunch here so far but Nubar has a great looking bar area with a contemporary gas fireplace and delicious food at reasonable prices. I meet friends here when we want to catch up, and not have to hurry. There is a varied selection of menu items and we've enjoyed New England clam chowder which is really good, squash and caramelized onion flatbread, caesar salad, smoked trout and quinoa salad -- all very fresh and scrumptious. The atmosphere is relaxing and I look forward to having dinner and brunch here. Also, the wait staff are friendly and helpful but not intrusive. It's my favorite place in Harvard Square."

  • "Stopped in for an early dinner on a Friday night and found the dining room to be still quiet before the evening rush. Tables were pleasantly far apart so as not to hear other conversations. The fireplace and bar seating looked very inviting for either business or social get-togethers. Appetizer list was interesting and portions reasonable. The flatbreads- especially the duck confit & manchengo cheese- were huge and just delicious! The potato gnocchi very yummy. Nice wine list and interesting cocktails. Would consider this to be a good place for a celebratory gathering - graduation would be perfect."

  • "Had the duck breast again, with spiced pears, sour cherries, perfectly cooked brussel sprouts, and chestnut stuffing. I could have this every night. Delicious. And as always perfect service and a very pleasant atmosphere where you can hear your dinner companion talk."

  • "My wife and I bought a groupon to this restaurant. The service was good, although it took 10-15 minutes for our drinks to get to us, as the bar was backed up. The food was great. You should make reservations as Friday and Saturday nights get very crowded. We will definitely go back again."

  • "Excellent dinner -- I can't remember the last time I visited the same restaurant 3 nights in a single week. I wasn't a fan of the swordfish but the steak fritte was good and the pork was phenomenal. A little pricey but a really nice departure from the overcrowded spots in Harvard Square."

  • "Our last meal at Nubar was one of the best. We usually get basic items like hamburgers and sandwiches--perfectly prepared. This time we splurged on the pork osso bucco and duck with chestnut stuffing. Excellent. Delicious. And the superb food perfectly matched by the attentive service. This is a great place and a wonderful retreat from higher-pressure and noisier places."

  • "Nubar always surprises me. I don't expect a hotel dining experience to be as all around nice as it is. Everything was pleasing. Though I was disappointed not to see their scallop entree, the duck was delicious as was the haddock entree my husband had. We will definitely return."

  • "My family and I went to Nubar about a year ago with a Groupon and really enjoyed it. I purchased another Groupon recently and what a stark difference in terms of service and food. Menu items are pretty much the same from last time so not much creativity there. We were there on a Sunday night and there was only one waitress working the dining room with a helper. The helper brings out our chowders but no spoons. We had to remind the helper we needed spoons in order to eat our chowder. We had to ask for bread too. My swordfish was rubbery. On top of everything else because we were using a Groupon, the waitress said it was their policy to charge 18% gratuity to the bill. Service clearly didn't warrant 18%...never going back."

  • "Lovely people, really lovely food, interesting menu mixes comfort food with more unusual options. Small plates like polenta and "crispy poached egg", well prepared beat salad, mezza plate etc. Excellent decor. Bonus is the small adjoining parking lot, $10 for 3 hrs. and the discount if you are coming from the nearby A.R.T. (Loeb Drama Center)."

  • "My first time at Nubar, and found it exceeded my expectations. Cool design with a wide gas fire in the lounge. Delicious food, served with style. The chef as a real way with duck so I look forward to go back to try something else."

  • "I've been to Nubar twice - once for lunch and once for dinner. It's a great restaurant. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is very comfortable, and the service is friendly and attentive. It's reasonably priced, too My favorite dish is the meze plate appetizer. Nubar is a little off the beaten path (in the Sheraton Commander outside Harvard Square). It's worth a visit."

  • "The more often I return to Nubar, the better it seems to get. Food is delicious, imaginative, yet completely satisfying (the servings are always plentiful without leaving you stuffed). Service is thoughtful and efficient--if you are on your way to a concert, tell the wait staff and they will be sure you're done in plenty of time. And the menu has enough variety that you can return often without getting bored with the same dishes. The more things I order, the more im[pressed I am with the kitchen's range of excellence"

  • "Everything was fine - nothing outstanding! The food was good, but my salmon was overdone enough to notice. The service was just OK. I had been there before for late night drinks at the bar and really enjoy the that scene more that sitting down at a table for a meal."

  • "This experience proves once again that one should avoid restaurants at especially popular times . . . like Valentines Day dinner. We should have known better. The kitchen was way behind (thirty-plus minute wait for entrees following clearance of the previous course), and our server was rushed. Just getting our check proved challenging. We'd been to Nubar once before --- on a quiet Sunday evening --- with much better results."

  • "My wife and I loved our meal including the duck and the pork osso bucco entrees. The potato leek lobster soup was superb. For valentine's day they had a special pris fix menu that included proseco, a rose, and a chocolate truffle. All were terrific touches."

  • "Food was great, but service was slow. It may have been because of it being Valentine's day, but it took us a while to get menus, only had one drink, because the waitress didn't check in until we were done with our food."

  • "Enjoyed meeting friends at this hotel dining spot with gas fireplace. Contemporary and cozy ambiance, with excellent service -- friendly and helpful staff. Lunch menu was varied and enjoyed my smoked trout salad -- saw many items I would enjoy. Friend's flatbread with duck confit was delicious. Will be back to try other tempting menu items as well as having a drink at the bar after work. A very comfortable place to be."
