Diner Reviews
  • "Novita is a neighborhood Italian restaurant that is consistently good - even very good. It never disappoints. Prices are reasonable, good service and street lights that gently stream into the dining room at night, can provide a romantic setting. "

  • "This was the third time my family and I ate at this restrauant. It is always amazing. The food is spectacular! My husband is in love with the ahi tuna. The service is awesome. This restrauant is definitely one of our favorites in New York City! "

  • "Simply amazing! Best of Gramercy, and one of the top italian's in the city!"

  • "Despite a drab dining room and uncomfortably cramped seating, Novita's glorious Italian dishes redeem everything. I've dined at Novita often over many years and have never left disappointed. Though it's seldom listed among the city's finest ristorantes, to my taste none serves tastier food, even those that charge twice as much."

  • "I am lucky to work a block away from Novita, and it is THE place I take colleagues for lunch, and have for nearly 20 years. It is consistently very good food, terrific service, and a lovely environment. The menu is great and there are always several specials that are interesting. The appetizers are a particularly good option is you want a light lunch, and there are in particular several seafood salads that are delicious. Basically, that's the thing about Novita. The food is delicious, across the entire menu. I don't usually like biscotti, but what they serve with coffee at the end is yum."

  • "Food is consistently good, especially the specials. Very crowded, loud tight space though so be prepared for that."

  • "I have been to Novita many times and it does not ever disappoint. The only issue with this last visit was the heat in the restaurant, which seemed to be on high! It was a little warm. But, the food was superb and the service is always wonderful. Had a sea bass special -- delicious! Will be back."

  • "Very nice ambiance, nice folks, attentive and patient service and excellent food. What's not to like!"

  • "we were in the neighborhood as a "two," grew to a "four" and then became a "six." The restaurant went out of its way to transition our table, after gently removing a table of tourists which had decided to spend the entire evening at the table. the food was terrific as was the service. the price was lower than anticipated."

  • "You don't have to live in the neighborhood to go to Novita but once you visit you will want to move here."

  • "I took 3 friends there, so we made a party of four. I chose the restaurant because it is fairly close to the National Arts Club and we had been to a lecture there. Novita was a wonderful surprise. Really good -- Welcoming and charming."

  • "Bustling with guests........but too noisy to talk with my old friend whom I don't see often. We could not hear each other's conversations across our table! The food, however, was delicious."

  • "There are thousands of restaurants in NYC but few can boast the consistency of Novita. We return here time after time to savor the regional delicacies of Italy as well as a spin on some old favorites. Pasta in particular are outstanding."

  • "Service was a little shaky, food Absolutely delicious!"

  • "I understand that some restaurants do not like to waste a table for 4 on 3 diners especially when those diners are women but we asked politely and the host just said "no, this is a table for 3, that is a table for 4". No apology . We then had to ask to order drinks, and the waiter just went through the motions of serving us. We felt pressured to leave and not linger over dessert as people kept coming in and every time the door opened a gust of cold air hit us. I heard the host, say "these women are not leaving" even though we were not lingering at all. The food was very good but that is the only positive thing I can say. I will not be returning."

  • "Have not eaten at Novita for a while since moving to a different hood. Seated in the room behind the bar with only five tables, we were able to hear each other. The starters, artichokes and tuna tartar were over the top. Mains, Bronzino and Swordfish, both not on the menu, were perfectly prepared and made even more delicious by a blend from Piemonte recommended by our waiter, a native Italian. A magnificent tiiramisu and espresso sent us on our way, promising to return soon."

  • "food is always amazing here, I have been coming here for years and everything on the menu is great. try the monk fish with seafood, tuna roll appetizer or any of the pastas are great!"

  • "Never, ever have a bad meal or experience here. the service, atmosphere, food are all just wonderful. love this place and that it's consistency to be absolutely amazing every time."

  • "I eat lunch at Novita quite often. the food quality is excellent, the staff is extremely professional and nice. True italian cooking - the food is fresh, expertly cooked with plenty of fresh vegetables and seafood, I especially value it because I cannot eat garlic so they couldnt be more accommodating for me and the food couldnt be more delicious!"

  • "It was my closest friend's 60th birthday. Novita more than rose to the occasion. The food was delicious, especially the stuffed zucchini blossoms and silken pasta. But there are many places in NY where this is true. What sets them apart is the way they are able to make their patrons feel like welcome guests. Without being intrusive, all of the staff, from host to busboy, made sure we were enjoying ourselves. That atmosphere is hard to quantify, but so special to experience!"

  • "Too much noise, crowded, service too slow. Food was excellent"

  • "In my opinion novita has the best Italian food in town. We requested a romantic table and that's exactly what we had. I highly recommend the restaurant."

  • "Had a client lunch here. Everything was just fine. Pretty basic menu. The suggested Chianti was excellent!"

  • "Food was great. Restaurant is very very crowded. Tables are close together and they rush you, in a subtle way, but nevertheless you know it. They are very nice, and the service was good but nevertheless it was not a peaceful meal. Waiters were bumping into you as they walked through the aisles. I would go back again, to see whether this was an unusual night. We had been before and it was crowded but not as packed ."

  • "Three of us arrived around 6. It was quiet. The pasta is worth the trip. By 8, every table was taken and the noise volume went up accordingly."
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "If you are lucky to sit in a cozy booth on the perimeter like we were the restaurant is wonderful and has plenty of room. If not the tables in the center are a bit cramped. The food, service and atmosphere surely make up for the lack of space."

  • "Giuseppe the owner is a gem - charm and style - brought champagne when are table wasn't quite ready. Thanks!"

  • "The eggplant was so delicious. The fresh tomatoes in the sauce make it very light. My pappardelle was excellent."

  • "This was our first visit to Novita, and we would definitely go back. The food was excellent and although we don't usually order dessert, we couldn't help ourselves. We ate every bite of everything we were served and I'm still thinking about dessert (semifreddo)!!"

  • "the food was outstanding, from start to finish, the only problem here, was the service, our server was terrible, she took our order, came back once about 40 minutes later to tell us she was very busy with other tables, but every time we looked up she was at the bar talking to the bartender. what a shame to have such good food with a server that just don;t care..."

  • "A great place to try some slightly different and very flavorful Italian food."

  • "My wife and I were able to enjoy pasta with truffles, but they were not fussy--in fact, the staff was extremely kind--when our daughters, who are at that age, said they just wanted regular old tomato sauce over regular old spaghetti. They accomodated us cheerfully. And anyplace that serves Gavi wine is serious about what they serve."

  • "Not having been to Novità for several years, it was nice to see that quality has remained at a high level. The tuna was outstanding, as were the other selections. Wine recommendation was spot-on (in the $50+ dollar range). If you are claustrophobic this is probably not the place for you as table are very close together all around the main part of the restaurant. The service is very professional, although we would have preferred to have seen out waiter more often (almost all needs are handled by the busboys), not allowing for much rapport to develop."

  • "Valentine's Day prix fixe menu. Good range of choices, excellent food. Once ordered, the kitchen and runners kept things flowing smoothly although our waiter was only attentive when taking the initial order. Had to flag other members of the team to get anything. Crowd feels local and authentic, if a bit drearily conventional. But the environment is cramped - too many tables, no room to navigate or breathe. The ratio of staff to guests is high, but they're all crowded into the space."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "and you will see the crowd squeeze in to enjoy the tasty stuffed zucchini flowers accompanied by prosciutto... or the yummy tuna roll appetizer followed by a host of main dishes not least of which would be the pasta with truffles..."

  • "My wife and I (ages 46 and 51) would go back again. Great ambience. Great service but here's the angle. Is it great service when everything comes out quick (water, bread, apps, wine, etc.) or are they trying to get you out of there quickly to turn over the table? We sensed it was both, so we purposely took our time ordering the desert and coffee (and Sambuca). My chicken was on the dry side but still a tasty meal (rolled chicken with spinach). Wife had gnocchi with lamb shank and loved it. Prices that you would expect (25-32 for entrée). Small restaurant, tight seating but you forget about it pretty quickly,"

  • "Novita is truly a neighborhood gem. Excellent Italian food with great service with reasonable prices considering the quality of the food."
    Dined on 1/31/2014
  • "I have previously written about this restaurant that I believe remains a neighborhood gem in an area with a surfeit of top restaurants. Most appealing aside from its consistent cuisine is its relatively small size that gives dining, especially business lunches, intimacy and elegance often lacking in other venues. Tables of 2-5 are the norm although larger groups can be handled. The service is gracious and the menu offerings are ample but not overwhelming. From appetizers (zucchini florettes; artichoke salad; proscuitto and melon, etc.), main courses (osso buco; spigola or branzino; many pastas) and desserts (tiramisu; cookies) the food is delicious and nicely balanced. Wines are well-selected and mostly Italian."

  • "This is a small busy restaurant with great food. The staff are not that friendly but perhaps because they are so busy. We had rather a long wait for our table and it is not a good place to have to wait, however, they made it up to us by comping us with 2 delicious deserts and one of the meals which was very generous."
