Nouveau Tavern is home to Southern- and New Orleans-style cuisine in the River North neighborhood of Chicago. The menu, created by Executive Chef Norman Hargrove, formerly of The Peninsula Hotel Chicago, consists of an assortment of traditional Southern and New Orleans dishes.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the restaurant morphs into Nouveau Nights and the nightlife kicks into full gear.Continued

Our waitress was awesome! She knew the menu very well and was able to describe the food in a way that we were able to taste it from her words."

  • "I'm not a fan of spicy food; not one bit. But I must say, this restaurant's "Louisiana style" menu was very good. I told our waitress I'm not partial to food that's too spicy and she recommended I have the pork chop with collard greens, and it was delicious. We went for my boyfriend's birthday and he enjoyed the shrimp grits with his meal and gave it 2 thumbs up! We will definitely visit again"

  • "This was my first time visiting the restaurant and it was AMAZING! The ambiance is nice and serene. The restaurant is good for conversation and an intimate gathering. The music does not blare where you cant hear others in your party talking. It continues at a nice moderate level. The foods presentation meets its expectation of taste. The food was very pleasant and tasty. Not too much seasoning where you couldn't enjoy the natural flavor of the food. I say ignore the negative reviews and go experience for yourself. The prices aren't bad either for downtown Chicago. That's what keep them above the competitive edge. Take $100 for 2 ppl you will be good! Great Food, Awesome Location, Worth the Money!"

  • "I selected this place to celebrate one of my closest friend's 35+ birthday and I must say a great time was had by all. We arrived at 9pm and was seated promptly as we had a table for 10 reserved. The waitress was fantastic and did an awesome job. The music was great, genres spanned from the 70s up to date but the DJ kept it mid 90s-2000s (which we LOVED!!!) until about midnight when the younger crowd started to come in, which was still decent. The food was top notch and the girls can't stop talking about it. We will definitely be back."

  • "I really like the scene at Nouveau. Beautiful decor. Great bartenders and excellent service. However, I was a bit underwhelmed by the food. For example, the mac -n-cheese was extremely bland. Mac-n-cheese just seems like a dish that you cannot go wrong with, but apparently you can. I've heard great things about the brunch, so I am going to give this place another shot. Hopefully, brunch is better."

Perfect enough for first date too because there's lots of people watching potential and the vibe is energetic enough to keep the convo going it'd there's a lull.   • "What attracted me were the bottomless mimosas. What intrigued me was a real Cajun/creole brunch. The Sous Chef (Oscar) was amazing. He constantly checked on our table and was super friendly. The problems began when the waitress brought over my entree and my eggs were not scrambled but poached. I can't eat runny eggs and I specificially remember asking her if this accomocation could be made. The next issue was the fact that our empty plates sat at our table. It wasn't busy AT ALL and there was no reason for our new plates to be mingling w/our old plates. Last but not least were the refills. Our champagne flutes should never have been empty. If the staff was on the same level as the Sous Chef this place would be awesome."

  • "The husband and I went to Nouveau this past Thursday for our date night & definitely enjoyed ourselves. Our server was great, the food was excellent & the feel of the place was sexy, as my love said. The fireplaces were lit, the lights were dim, the music was audible, but not overwhelmingly loud...it was great. We both enjoyed our meals and were greeted by both Chef Norman & Chef Oscar! They told us about the various themes they have on various nights & invited us back out. Our hats off to those two gentlemen & to the owners, who apparently are African American men. #ClapForEm Nouveau Tavern is surely here to stay. Eat up Lovies!!!"

  • "Everything was good from start to finish. When we walked in we were greeted with a simile our server was very attentive and came to our table numerous times to check on us. I got the pork chop it was grilled and very tender and the cornbread was to die for. We went for dinner but I would love to check this place out and see how it is on a Saturday. I will def be coming back here."

  • "A friend and I decided to have a dinner party together to celebrate our birthdays. We choose Nouveau because it offers dinner and a good nightclub. The food was absolutely AMAZING. The shrimp and grits are something serious. Our waitress (Ashley) was AMAZING. I did have a little trouble making reservations before the event but once I got there, I talked to someone and everything worked out perfectly. I would definitely recommend this place for good food and a good time. I had so much fun."

  • "So surprised! This place has wonderful ambiance, food and service. I went with three girlfriends and we had a fabulous time. The food is amazing! The crawfish fritters and cornbread were wow! The sweet potato fries delicious though a bit oily The shrimp and grits were the best I've had and my two southern friends concurred it was delicious. I had the gumbo, which was spicy,filled with seafood and flavor. My only complaints: the music was too loud initially. Wait until at least 1030 to transition. No karaoke or trivia on Friday please. Music only. Waitress Ashley was attentive, and outstanding, chef too! A nice place to congregate with food and atmosphere that's unique, welcomed, and refreshing. Love!"

  • "The atmosphere was nice but the service was slow and the food was not cooked well. I found chunks in my sweet potato puree and the catfish was hard to cut through. When I mentioned this to the chef he responded with maybe next time it'll be better. Since when is blackened catfish gummy and tough. I'd never recommend anyone to go there and eat dinner. Stick to the appetizers and drinks."

  • "My husband and I went here on 02/15/2014 for Valentine's Day Celebration. As we approached the restaurant, the outside looked much concealed so I became a little worried but once we’d entered to my surprise it was beautiful!! From the valet, to the reservation hostess, to the coat check room to the waitress we weren’t disappointed. The food was great (large portions), our drinks were on point and the atmosphere was very romantic. My husband said that this will be our spot as long as they are open; and he doesn’t enjoy dinning out as much as I do so that is a compliment in its self. I highly recommend this restaurant to all."

  • "This revue is from two professional females age 43 and 49. I've been receiving emails about this place and decided that a coworker and I would visit. Our reservations were for yesterday (Thursday) at 530pm. We were the 1st customers through the door and we both were blown away by the décor. The choice of color and furniture was perfect and very upscale. The use of the color purple really set a mood or tone. The choice of music for the dinner hour was Neo Soul and a very good choice and very soothing after a hard days work. We then ordered dinner but we both were rather disappointed at the time it took for our dinner to reach us. When it did arrive, it was FABULOUS and beyond words!"

  • "I checked out Nouveau Tavern on Friday, 2/14 for Valentine's Day on a recommendation from a friend. My lady and I had Lobster Bisque and the Bayou wings for appetizers. We both had the Chicken Jambalaya for an entree. The wings were amazing -- some of the best I've had anywhere. But overpriced for an app at $12 and 6 wings. The Jambalaya was also delicious, but if I recall it was about $18 a plate. Good portions, but not $18 portions. Either way, overall a good experience. The waiter was nice. The ambiance was quiet, yet energetic for a Valentines Day. Just a little to expensive for what we got in return."

  • "The food was fantastic, but two things downgraded the experience. First, there are large TV's everywhere; you can't help but watch them, even if you don't want to. Also, the place added a 20% gratuity to the bill for our party of 2 (you had to read the fine print to figure it out) and then suggested amounts for additional gratuity. That seemed kind of creepy."

  • "Heard about this place as a new good spot, so decided to have food & drinks there one late Friday evening. Overall good place, but I would not return just for the late-night menu & drinks, as the cost was pricey for only 4 people. Considering only 3 of us ate and we each had 2 drinks, it should not have been a $200+ bill. Food was average, drinks were okay, and overall service was good. I will suggest this place to friends based on the vibe of the place, but if you want to eat, come early for the full menu or eat somewhere else and come late to enjoy music & dancing. Hope the place does not turn out ot be a younger than 25 year old kind of place, but maintains a good place for young professionals that enjoy lounges and good scenes."

  • "Nothing here was bad; some dishes wowed more than others. The chicken gumbo was the star of the night without question, it's really well executed and very delicious. My girlfriend liked the shrimp and grits but I found them average. The sweet potato puree under the blackened catfish was excellent but overpowered the dish to such an extent that I can't tell you whether or not the catfish was good -- I couldn't taste it over the sweetness of the puree. And the bananas foster bread pudding dessert was a satisfying finish, well-balanced and not overly sweet. The biggest thing Nouveau has going for it is that there just aren't a lot of similar places in town. I don't find Nouveau a can't miss, but it will hit the spot if you're craving cajun."
