Diner Reviews
  • "Very disappointed. My friend and I came in for restaurant week. We had dined at other Jean George restaurants downtown and enjoyed the experiences, so decided to try Nougatine. Service was lackluster and extremely slow. The pacing of the overall meal was haphazard and we waited an uncomfortably long time in between courses. The server had to actually apologize several times and kept saying that the chefs were "slammed" by restaurant week demand. Having only offered two different dishes per course, we thought that it would be easier for kitchen to just produce multiple dishes at once since everyone was ordering pretty much the same thing (they did offer several a la carte dishes from their regular menu). Food was uninspired."

  • "The Restaurant Week menu dishes were delicious and a very good deal. We've been to Jean George and this is a good option when desiring a more informal dinner."

  • "Great, attentive, friendly service and good food (on the salty side this time in general). The only downside was that I couldn't see my food that well once the sun went down even with the candle lights."

  • "The cucumber yogurt soup with a kick was a bit too spicy for our taste...it would have been better if it wasn't so spicy."

  • "Service was spot on and food was amazing. We had great weather which added to the ambience."

  • "I thought the food could have been much more adventurous. The salad was literally just arugula and lemon zest."

  • "As overseas visitors we checked the law in relation to under 21 drinking in advance of traveling. Nougatine refused to serve my daughter >18 years to drink a glass of wine, even though it was within the law once we as her parents ordered/paid for it. The manager said it didn't matter what the law was , it was their policy. The food was very disappointing and the staff noticed we were less than enthralled as evidenced by our full plates at the end of the meal, but did not address it by speaking to us instead they presented desserts ( we did not want). They simply bought off the discomfort of a complaint by presenting "the consolation" of desert."

  • "We had a nice dinner, with friendly but spotty service, and the food was good, although not as hot as should have been. But with the least expensive glass of Chardonnay at $ 29, I think we will be finding other places to frequent !"

  • "It was too windy on the Terrace and we left. I know this restaurant has great food and I will be back."

  • "Food was excellent! The foie gras was prepared extremely well. The drinks (cucumber martini and passion whiskey sour) were some of my favorites in the city."

  • "We were two families having the prix fixe lunch menu on a hot summer day, all seated comfortably in the shade. Most important, the food was excellent. Selcted dishes included tuna tartare and calamari, organic chicken, carameized bass and cheeseburger. Our only slight complaint has to do with the service. While our main waiter was really kind and helpful throughout, it was at times quite difficult to get hold of him or others, for instance to get more wine or water. As the number of waiters seemed quite high, it left the impression of the restaurant being slightly disorganised. In short, it was not a question of attitude problems but rather managerial shortcomings."

  • "Food was real good, service was outstanding. Portions were a bit small for the price, but the food was good."

  • "Reservation was inadvertently made for the Terrace and they were nice to find a table for us inside."

  • "Beautiful spot for outdoor dining, and great to be able to order Jean-Georges' gorgeous food a la carte so the meal doesn't have to cost a fortune. His tuna tartare is the best ever, and the pea soup is perfect..."

  • "Delicious food (reasonably priced and the prix fixe lunch was very satisfying!) and the service was great. It was a hot day and even then it was still very enjoyable."

  • "Service was great and attentive, dining area lovely, food was fabulous, tasty and superbly presented We had set price lunch menu, which was quite affordable, though I would pay individual normal price for this kind of food Limited umbrellas, book for table in shade if booking this restaurant and sitting in the terrace"

  • "Service here always great. Atmosphere too. We come often and menu gets a little boring. No specials. Fish is wonderful except not the salmon. Tastes like poor quality farmed. They have a wonderful wine list and great cocktails. Come for the atmosphere and service. Some dishes on the menu are excellent - try shrimp salad (although shrimp are farmed), fried calamari, and beet salad. The hake and burger for entree are very good. Warm chocolate cake is out of this world."

  • "We had the prix-fixe lunch at the Terrace. Each dish was fabulously presented, and tasted exquisite. My friend's dish came with some red pepper flakes, which she had expressly asked NOT to have, and when she brought it to the waiter's attention he was very apologetic. He said the dish was not usually prepared like that. We were brought a lovely complimentary dessert to share (on top of our included ones) and it was fabulous. After our meal the manager (I assume) came to our table to apologize again for the mistake. I would eat there again and again and again....I had the tuna tartare, which was fresh and tasty, the hake, which was perfectly prepared, and a warm chocolate souffle/cake that melted in my mouth. Absolute bliss!"

  • "excellent food. we took the tasting menu and each snd every dish was excellent. service is great, and we had a wondrful evening"

  • "The food was totally mediocre. The presentation of the shrimp salad was messy. The red snapper was overcooked. Nothing special with the strawberry shortbread. Although eating in the terrace was nice, I was disappointed with the food because it's Jean-Georges, you know."

  • "Always a pleasure to have a dinner on the terrace, although a bit chilly that night. Not only food was great but staff was very kind."

  • "The food was awesome. I had one of the best pasta and steak dishes in a long time. However, the service was average. We were not made to feel special. I guess they reserve all the fawning for inside?"

  • "We celebrated our 1-year anniversary with my wife at this restaurant, and we will never forget it thanks to the quality of every choice on the menu, special and sentimental value the restaurant has for us as we always return here for significant occasions, and for the impeccable and personal service provided by the whole staff. We highly recommend this restaurant to all couples, dates, even small groups for that special touch to the evening, regardless of a special occasion."

  • "One of the nicest thing about Nougatine Terrace was 1. How quiet and peace full it was, no loud music, no loud conversation 2. We didn't have to stuff down three courses each 3. We were completely satisfied by 6 scrumptious appetizers, 2 main courses and 1 sensational dessert 4.Josh, the wine maven, who found us a quite drinkable Portuguese Rioja for $44 on a wine list invaded by priced for Chinese billionaires and Russian Oligarchs 5. Garbrial, our server who had a great sense of humor - laughed at everything almost that I said."

  • "We had seats on the terrace with a lovely view of the park. Midway through the meal, rain struck and the staff deftly cleared the terrace and found alternate seating for everyone inside. Although it was undoubtedly a stressful time for the staff, they maintained their composure and kept everyone informed of the status of their new tables. The rain break in the meal and wait for a new table did nothing to diminish the quality of the food or service."

  • "I have been a regular and i have noticed in the last year the food does not measure up to its reputation it lost its spark and other than adding some spices everything is pretty much bland , even though the chef was there that night and checking in the dinning room if everything was allright i think he should spend more time in the kitchen."

  • "Food is good, service is great. But do not go there for lunch on a sunny day: their umbrellas are non functional and poorly set up. You will not get any shade and will have to squint at your food."

  • "Food was nothing to write home about, but good. The service was awful, we mentioned it and then got a free show of desserts and complementing wine....they apologized but still left a bad taste in my mouth. It was our anniversary, we even told them that, and instead of having a better experience bc of it, it seemed worse. They weren't even busy, and there were plenty of open tables....probably bc others know about their less than par service."

  • "We used to love this restaurant (cheaper less formal jean George) but the last two times we have gone have been disappointing. The food is just not anywhere as delicious as it used to be (the bank wrapped pork chop was an odd mix of flavors and was frankly mediocre as an example), the service is spotty, the crowd seems to suddenly reflect it is located in the trump tower, and the kick in the behind is they (like admittedly many manhattan restaurants) laughably overcharge for wines by the glass $38 a glass for a mediocre brunello? $21 for Sancerre? Basically they are charging retail 750ml pricing for a half a glass of wine. If the food was great you might put up with it but this place is trading on fading glory. Never again"

  • "Lunched here twice over the weekend. What's not to like! Three course lunch for $36 is a great bargain considering the quality of the dishes. Good wine list. Attentive and friendly service. Nice view over the park. As I spooned into the chocolate lava cake for the second time in 2 days I felt life could not be much better."

  • "Food was very good, portions as expected for a prix fixe menu. Staff, while cordial, could have been a bit more lively and attentive( we were never asked if we wanted a beverage!)"

  • "Zagat nailed this in their reviews. Brunch on the terrace was fabulous and probably the only way we would have been able to afford the talent of this chef. Everything we ordered was unique and done to perfection. It didn't hurt that the day was sunny and 73 :) Definitely check the weather out - if it is not idea, your experience will be different...it is a terrace after all."

  • "Were nearly scared off by the number of recent negative reviews, but were rewarded for our courage with a really lovely fall evening, memorable food, and very kind, helpful, unobtrusive service. My husband and I stopped in for a glass of wine and appetizers which became dinner. The setting is green and alfresco but the view is vertical- a delightful combination. Food to recommend: tuna tartar, butterscotch pudding, shrimp salad, molten chocolate cake. The much recommended artichoke was not memorable though the mayonnaise sauce was. An amuse bouche of celeriac was so exquisite we suggested they make it an entrée."

  • "Nougatine is a rare pearl in Midtown. Just steps away from the hustle and bustle of Columbus Circle there is a sweet spot with great food - try the tuna tartare - and amazing service. The terrace is shady and peaceful and is a calm, cool place to have lunch. With Central Park across the road, there's somewhere nearby to walk off lunch... But you may just want to linger over the delicious chocolate dessert and enjoy the relaxed vibe for a bit longer. Definitely worth a visit."

  • "Food was superb, but wind was brisk on the patio and there were no tables our waiter could seem to secure for us. I just wish that the waiter assigned to our table would be able to take care of us throughout the meal -- especially when it comes restaurant-related matters. Thanks though."

  • "i eat at JG frequently, and rarely is there a hiccup. however this time there were a few. while redeemed by the quality of the food, i'll avoid the terrace. its hot and its loud. i had to send by my sad wilted shrimp salad and replace it with the classic tuna but in the future i'll make my reservations in the dining room."

  • "Let me start by saying how much I adore Nougatine. I eat here regularly and the food is normally transporting. For some strange (and rare) reason, the food was "meh" this time. Completely uninspriring and lacking visual appeal. My dining companion sent her fish entree back twice before changing it to chicken in exasperation. The sauce on the cod was overly seasoned, extremely salty, and prevented one from tasting the fish. The fish itself looked like a small, raggedy sliver, and was slightly rubbery. The chicken, although tastier, was sprinked with a handful of shrivelled up little peas. Although I was disappointed, I would come back as I believe this is a one-off. I've had more exceptional experiences than bad ones."

  • "On a hot day we sat on the terrace and felt rushed. It was as though the second the last bite of a course was finished, people were waiting around the corner to rush the table with the next course or the check-even with full glasses of wine remaining. And yet, my wine glass was empty for several minutes-someone even attempted to clear it and I had to point out that we have a bottle being chilled and there must be more glasses remaining. But food was, as always, amazing. This was definitely not their usual service."
