A word from Nougatine at Jean Georges
Nougatine is the more casual sister of Jean-Georges, with a very lively bar scene at night. The restaurant attracts a mix of celebrities, socialites, and movers and shakers in the business world. Adjacent to the formal Jean-Georges dining room, Nougatine serves the signature and seasonal dishes of Chef Jean-Georges for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, 365 days a year. The menu is more casual than that offered at Jean-Georges but still market driven, utilizing only the freshest and finest ingredients. In addition to providing gorgeous views of Central Park, the newly renovated dining room by Thomas Juul-Hansen features a bustling, immaculate open kitchen. Tones of brown and cream mingle to create an elegant space that is soothing by day and exciting by night. Nougatine offers a prix-fixe lunch menu Monday through Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Pre- and post-theater prix-fixe menus are available Sunday through Friday from 5:30 to 6 p.m., and from 10 to 11 p.m.Continued
Diner Reviews
  • "The prix fix lunch is a great value with more choices than most other restaurants offer for priced fixed. Great when you are going to Lincoln Center or City Center for a matinee. "

  • "Like many New Yorkers we enjoy eating out, and do it frequently. And often we go in search of the newest places that people are talking about. But when pressed to name our favorite restaurants, Nougatine always comes quickly to mind. We keep coming back again and again and never tire of it — it's consistently excellent in every respect. "

  • "The food was top notch in a more simple way than Jean George. Menu choice was amazing with many of my favorite items. The ambiance was wonderful as was the service. Met some neighborhood people who are regulars and they raved about the place. For a change I felt the alcohol in my drink. That is hard to find especially in mixed drinks at most places. I look forward to returning soon."

  • "As always, the total Jean George experience didnt disappoint. We hadn't dined in a while and the menu updates are fab. Love the veal Milanese. "

  • "Every experience at Nougatine in the past has been sublime. You know that J-G will make his memorable mark. This visit, however, was so disappointing. I had early dinner with friends this past Saturday. The Peekytoe Crab appetizer was as good as ever but the Grilled Organic Chicken with Meyer Lemon, was totally unacceptable. When the dish arrived, a friend commented that it looked like a chicken pot pie (not a bad assessment!) There were two pieces of chicken; one was moist and tasty but the other was dry and stiff (had trouble cutting through it with my fork) and tasted as it looked. The Meyer lemon did not complement the dish at all but rather worked against it. The chicken was swimming in a lukewarm broth with mushy amorphic gnocchi."

  • "Un superbe restaurant où tous les plats sont délicieux. Aliments choisis et pas trop de complexité dans la composition. cuisson parfaite. Très belle carte des vins. Un des incontournables de New York pour une soirée parfaite. Le menu dégustation était extra"

  • "Masterful cuisine, understated elegance, calm environment in the midst of hustle and bustle. Service was a little off...took time to get servers attention more than once even though the restaurant was not full and plenty of wait staff available. A glance towards our table would have solved the problem."

  • "The quality of the food, the discretion of the service and the overall ambiance were at a par with comparable restaurants in Europe. It was not too noisy, but we had our late breakfast at 10:45."

  • "Came for a celebratory lunch before a matinee. The food was wonderful and the service gracious and professional. We told our server that we needed to leave in time for our show. Dessert had not arrived a half hour after our main course was cleared away. We had to look around for our server and when we finally located him and paid our check, our dessert arrived. We told our server that we had to leave and he asked if we wanted him to wrap our warm chocolate cake and ice cream so we could take it with us. Quite amateurish for one of new York's finest restaurants."

  • "We were so pleased with our dining experience. From the moment we entered, we were greeted warmly and given a fantastic table in the window. Our server, George was professional, informative and enjoyable. Food was fabulous."

  • "The $35 fixed price lunch has to be one of the best deals in town. You get 3 courses of tremendous quality for the price, as it worked out for me, one glass of wine. Food was tremendous. Someday I'll do dinner"

  • "Exceptional kitchen with a terrific and innovative menu marred by indifferent wait staff that couldn't be bothered. We came early for a pre-theatre dinner and found the service poor and not interested in us."

  • "Nougatine has been described as Jean-Georges-lite and in many ways, it is. The food, well crafted and presented comes from the same kitchen. The bar serves the same drinks, only here you can see them being made and the service, well, this is where it comes undone. But if you don't mind "Hi, my name is..." service and the occasional odd look when asking about your meal then it's no bother. The sommelier is extremely knowledgeable and the wine list a serious leather-bound tome we found tiring after a long day, so their set matching wines were perfect and good value with a few very interesting glasses you'd not usually expect to see on something like this. Nice and buzzy - worth the booking."

  • "In recent trip to NY, I dined at several Michelin starred restaurants like Le Bernardin, Daniel, Eleven Madison Park, JungSik, Marea, etc. And, Jean Georges was one of my favourite experiences! Hostess made a mistake and we're forgotten at the bar for 40 mins til finally seated at the table. Manager came to apologize and he offered us to try Jean Georges' 7 course tasting menu which is normally not offered at Nougatine. The tasting menu, both signature and spring, were outstanding, and they even gave us couple complimentary dishes. Our server, young cute lady with short hair, was very professional, attentive and friendly. Towards the end, we felt little bit rushed, but overall, it was an outstanding experience in terms of foods and service."

  • "Food was like in a 1 or 2 stars restaurant! Very good ratio price/quality with the fixed price lunch. I enjoyed also the neighborhood and of course the restaurant atmosphere chic & modern. Service was excellent, and wine choice is gorgeous. I do recommend!"

  • "Nougatine at Jean-Georges is the slightly more casual restaurant at Jean-Georges, but it is still very classy, both in food, decor and service. We went as a group of four. The open kitchen gives a great atmosphere but isn't too noisy or intrusive. Everything that everyone ate was of excellent quality. Some better than others but that's also personal preference. Only thing I noticed was that the pasta in the ravioli that came with my fish dish was not of the standard I would expect at a restaurant of that quality. Wine list very good, with a wide range of prices and selections, including some very reasonably priced wines. Worth a visit."

  • "Food was great and waiting staff were friendly. However, we had to wait for 30 mins to be seated. No explanation... Just left standing awkwardly near the entrance abandoned until we were called. I expected more from this place. Will not likely to return."

  • "Had a wonderful time at Nougatine for my 60th birthday. The superb dinner was topped off by the dessert tasting menu being presented with a candle and Happy Birthday written on a piece of white chocolate. The food as always was just exquisite. Thought service was a little off. It was very busy and everyone seemed to arrive at once. Service wasn't bad would describe it as perfunctory. But still can't wait to go back!"

  • "I particularly love Nougatine for dinner, but it is great for breakfast as well. The view is gorgeous, the service outstanding, and the food delicious-perhaps a little less inventive at breakfast than at lunch or dinner, but still delicious."

  • "I have dined at Nougatine many times. I've never had a bad dining experience EXCEPT for this visit. The food and drinks were very good, as they usually are here (Nougatine's main strength is its consistency). However, the bald waiter in the dining room was just so unpleasant. He forgot to put in our table's order, so 3-4 tables that were seated after us got their meals before we got our appetizers. It doesn't end there, he never apologized for his mistake and instead blamed it on the kitchen and how busy it was (come on, it's always busy). So my friends and I had to rush through our meals. The WORST thing is, he was so worried that we wouldn't tip him (he knew he messed up) that he opened our signed check ON our table in front of our faces!"

  • "Nougatine is a nice spot for dinner with a friend. Just enough of a scene to be interesting but not overwhelming. We went on a Tuesday night and it was busy. So busy that soon after we finished our meal, we were asked to finish up as others were waiting for a table. Even though we were offered a drink in the bar, that part of our experience was rather unpleasant."

  • "One of my favorite restaurants in NYC: service is always attentive and anticipatory, and the food is usually sublime. Great for both special occasions and for an quick dinner with family or friends when I'm in town."

  • "Plenty to enjoy here - smooth service and well-prepared food, as well as a view of the park and stylish clientele for entertainment. The French toast with caramelized apples was worth the high calorific consumption; the free-range chicken with Meyer lemon jam on kale sustaining and flavorful. A pleasant place to eat before catching a matinee at Lincoln Center."

  • "I love this room and the service is outstanding. However, the well priced prix-fixe left me unsatisfied on this last visit. The shrimp salad contained 3 (delicious) shrimp and a mountain of too many greens. My sea bass was OK and had a very, very salty sauce and salty greens. The chocolate cake is always great but the other dessert was very disjointed and the flavors did not complement each other. We'll return, however."

  • "Service was off. We waited for a table ( they had overbooked) and then had poor service. The food was terrific, as usual, but the overall experience was not up to par."

  • "Staff were very attentive, but the our main courses were bland and uninspired. The veal milanese was more milanese (and oil) than veal. Disappointing. Very active bar scene even late into the evening with people of all ages. Overall it was good, but not worth spending the money,"

  • "Nougatine has the delicious food of a fine dining experience but in a comfortable setting where you can have a good time. You get an amuse in the beginning and chocolates at the end and amazing food in between. The shrimp and avocado salad on a bed of lettuce and radicchio has a delicious dressing (truffle oil maybe?) and the foie gras brule is unique, rich and perfect. The gemelli pasta with pistachio pesto and brussel sprouts is both comforting, yummy and has a slight sheen of healthiness. The black bass is cooked perfectly with a slightly spicy sauce to accompany it. I would suggest making a reservation at least a couple of days (if not more) in advance since at one point there was a half-hour wait to sit at the bar!"

  • "Had a terrific dinner here before Lincoln Center performance--extraordinary beet and ricotta appetizer and delicious desserts of butterscotch pudding and pear-cherry crisp.Slow-cooked salmon was good but potatoes underneath were hard and passionfruit sauce too sweet. My favorite dish is the shrimp-avocado salad."
