Diner Reviews
  • "I had been here previously and was very impressed with the food. This time, the food was much less memorable. While it was good, it was not up to the standard that either of us expected based on our last visit. The service was still fine and the wait staff, professional and accommodating. For the prices and quality of the food, next time I would go elsewhere. While I do not like huge portions, the main course was extremely skimpy and just average. "

  • "I dined pre-opera at Nota Bene. Delicious cocktail, sage and lavender but refreshing, not sweet. Rejected the pre-performance prix fixe menu as too boring and ordered off the regular menu, still had plenty of time to get to the performance. The duck confit salad was divine, lots of subtle flavors and just the right size. The halibut was lovely but could have used some more interesting accompaniments. Pleasant, knowledgable staff with a good flow of service. "

  • "The food at Nota Bene is always terrific and this occasion was no different. However the service for our table of 4 friends was slow at times as many servers seemed to be focusing on a large table nearby that was ordering vast amount of wine. It took longer than it should have for our server to ask us about drinks or wine, we were sitting for at least 10 minutes before anyone came by to take our order. It seemed that our original server had passed our table on to another one as he was busy pleasing the larger table. Once our wine order was taken it was brought to the table promptly, however it then took another 10 minutes or so for the server to take our food orders. I recommend tuna tartare, foie gras, halibut, black cod and the frites."

  • "I have been here several times in the past and was always pleased. This time the white asparagus appetizer was soggy and the veal chop tough. Not what I expected based on the past. I'm not sure I would bring a client there again. On the plus side the service was top notch as usual."

  • "Its was my 3rd time there and as always, it was a winner. Great food, great wine, good service. The oysters we're excellent. The tartare and beef tenderloin had great flavors and the meat was cooked to perfection. The polenta fritters was crispy like it was advertised. Everyone should a least once in theirs lifetime eat the sticky toffee pudding. "

  • "My 2 friends and I had a fabulous time at Note Bene prior to attending the opera Hercules. This was my second time to enjoy the food and service at this establishment, and I will return next time I visit Toronto. Excellence is reliable here!"

  • "Great wine list however they serve all wine types in the the same "all purpose" glass no matter how much you pay for your Pino, Cab-Sav or Chardonnay .Pity!"

  • "We came for dinner around 9pm on Saturday night. It was busy and they even allowed us to add a diner. Ordered the ceviche and the duck salad to start. I cant do cilantro, so they split the salad for us. One without. The textures and flavours were definitely on point. Very inventive. We also had the black cod, Halibut and Ravioli. All cooked to perfection and delicious. The service was great too. Well done."

  • "We went for the Monday night special of 1/2 dozen oysters with a Hoegaarden beer. A dozen oysters, one duck salad and a black cod entree later....we enjoyed a fabulous evening! Terrific wine selection, the oysterman was superb -really knew his stuff and the service was fantastic. A great way to spend a rainy Monday evening!"

  • "The way the gin and tonic was delivered was excellent and very beautifully presented. Nicest drink I have ever had. Our waiter was excellent. Extremely attentive and professional but not pretentious. The food was very good although I will say, had it not been for the extra side we ordered, we would have still been a bit hungry. The sticky toffee pudding was amazing!"

  • "I rated Nota Bene 3 stars....could have been 4 or more. The food was great and the ambiance was nice, but the service felt like they were too busy....not bad service just ok service. I had the tuna tartare and the caveletti - they were outstanding. My dining guest enjoyed the salmon!"

  • "This was our fourth visit to NB. The food has always been excellent regardless of what we've tried, and the service is impeccable. This is our favourite Toronto restaurant (and we've been to many!!)."

  • "The food was great and the service was too. The atmosphere is kind of obnoxious, too bright and a wide open room."

  • "Came here for dinner before going to ballet at Four Seasons. Heard about this place many many times...and about their extensive wine list. Because I was not getting a bottle of wine, their extensive wine list didn't do much for me. The restaurant only has about 5-6 wines by glass so you need to get a bottle if you want to try something out of ordinary. Their wines by glass are not impressive. Food is okay...their salad are huge and have too much dressing. Tuna tartare and ceviche was good, but in comparison to salad portions, they were tiny."

  • "We really enjoyed our meal at this restaurant and thought the food was very tasty, it was presented well and served with care and precision. Our server was very pleasant and attended to our every need, she definitely made the evening flow nicely. The restaurant itself was very pleasing to the eye and I would go back again."

  • "We decided to go back to Nota Bene for the first time in a while as we were seeing a ballet at the Four Seasons. Our reservation was for 6:00 and they made sure we finished 3 courses by 7:15, so we had no problem making our show. The most fun part of the meal was creating our own gin cocktail, selecting a gin, mixer, and size of ice cube. We got to mix it ourselves with additional garnishes of cucumber, juniper berries, and hibiscus leaves. The rest of the meal was all very well prepared and balanced. The choices were not particularly adventurous or novel, but everything was very satisfying. Highlights includes the lobster salad, venison with vegetable puree, the Seville orange sponge cake, and the chocolate cake with s'mores ice cream."

  • "A lovely and lively restaurant on Queen Street West near University, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the food delicious. We have been here before and the menu changes often enough to keep it interesting. Fish and Pasta mains are our favorites."

  • "Food was very expensive for what was provided. Entree was lukewarm and overpriced."

  • "Nota Bene has a relaxed and welcoming feel. The service was friendly and knowledgeable about the food and wine pairings. We had the Big Eye Raw Tuna Tartare as an appetizer to share and my partner thought it was great. For our entrees, we had the Perth County Beef Tenderloin on top of risotto and the Veal Chop. The tenderloin was flavourful, although the risotto was not as thick or creamy as expected. The veal was extremely tender. For dessert, we had the Michel Cluizel Chocolate Cake and the Sticky Toffee Nut Pudding. The cake was moist and the marshmellows in the smores ice cream even had those crisp bits from roasting over a fire. The Sticky Toffee Nut Pudding sweet but very good. I would definitely recommend coming here."

  • "Excellent but more expensive than the three dollar signs on Open Table. 300 for 2 and that was not being extravagant."

  • "We felt rushed. Needed more time to make choices...on food, alcohol and dessert. There was no one waiting for our table so I resented the demand for "speed" that the four of us felt. Will return as we love the food and the energy of the place but will speak to the situation. P"

  • "Our favorite pre-ballet restaurant. Such a pretty, nicely lit and well maintained restaurant. Service is always impeccable. Interesting bar menu - husband ordered a smoked bourbon concoction (smoked in house), which was very tasty. Their pre-theatre prix fixe is a great deal ($46 for 3 courses). Always interesting menus like matzoh ball soup with truffles (great broth and nice earthy flavor and very light matzoh balls!); citrus soy glazed black cod was moist but not oily and served with delicious Asian greens, pickled ginger and pureed cauliflower;; roasted brussel sprouts side order and warm chocolate cake with smores ice cream all had tons of flavor. Parking across the street for $20 for the evening although it fills up early."

  • "Service was not good, not once did we get asked how are food was. My tea had loose bits in it, my steak was supposed to be medium, it was rare, and because of this service I will not return."

  • "The food was amazing. Lobster salad is a must try. Everything was delicious. Everything was perfect, but I was suprised no veggies accompanied any of our dishes. I thought it overpriced, but the food and service were excellent."

  • "Unbelievable experience at Nota Bene! We were greeted by a couple of friendly hostesses who immediately took our coats and proceeded to sat us down. A few minutes later, water and appetizers materialized. At this point, I am totally blown away by the attentiveness of this restaurant. Our waitress was unbelievable - very friendly, knowledgeable and very good at engaging us in conversation. Food was excellent; service outstanding; presentation was gorgeous! I had never tried a fish so delicately cooked in my life! I am a Prud' Homme Beer Sommelier and one of things that immediately jumped at me is the fact my beer brand was served in a branded beer glass facing me! The waiters actually made a point to turn the glass towards me! WOW!"

  • "The suckling pig special was wonderful. The oysters were lovely. The service, unfortunately was not. The server who brought the oysters dropped the plate and spilled ice, horse radish and condiments onto the tablecloth. She apologized, and left, we assumed, to return with something to clean the mess. Not so. Our, waiter, who much later brought the mains, also ignored the pooling water and sauce. We cleaned it up, and when we saw the server again, asked her to bring a napkin to cover the the damp, now discoloured cloth. She apologized again and said "right away," but never returned."

  • "Nota Bene is definitely a 5 star dining establishment. The food is wonderfully prepared and I have never been disappointed. The staff is attentive, but not intrusive. The dining experience is relaxed and I could spend an entire evening there just sipping wine and taking in the delightful décor. For pre-theatre dining the atmosphere is also relaxed and not hurried, and all the dishes arrive promptly. You are made to feel special from the moment you walk in until you leave."

  • "NB is a crisp modern dining experience. Despite the cold I opted for one of their custom Gin and Tonics. Choose the gin, the tonic, and even the ice. It comes with peppercorns and hibiscus flowers and was quite delightful. The Charcuterie slab was excellent, as good as Black Hoof with crisp French bread wafers. Just the right amount. The pasta with mushrooms and shaved Perigord truffle was rich and flavourful. The meal was fulfilling without being over-filling."
