A word from Not Your Average Joe's Woodbridge
Why would a restaurant born and raised in Massachusetts open a location in Woodbridge, Virginia? Doesn’t seem like a path the average restaurant would be expected to take. But then, we’re not the average restaurant — something you might have guessed from our name. Now to answer the question. We chose Woodbridge because it’s a thriving community in a beautiful part of the country. Leesburg and Gaithersburg — the other two communities we’ve settled into outside of our native Massachusetts — both welcomed us warmly, so we think we’ll be at home in Woodbridge too. there are five breweries, three wineries and numerous farmer’s markets within a 20-mile radius of our soon-to-be home in Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center. That means we’ll have plenty to satisfy our preference for locally sourced ingredients. Our chef takes a creative approach to made-from-scratch food, where everything is prepared to order (aka, your way), where service is over the top and prices are not. That’s us.Continued

  • "Love coming here. Seasonal menu always interesting."

  • "3 meals service was a little slow pizza was a little runny and peanut butter thing didn't taste peanutty and it was gritty"

  • "I had the chicken enchiladas. It looked good and tasted good, but I was surprised that no salsa or taco/enchilada sauce was included or even available on request. The server did the best he could and offer me Heinz zesty chicken sauce and tabasco. I was disappointed! I suggest that if you're going to offer a menu item, that it's as good or better than what's available at the restaurant next door. I will go to Uncle Julio's for enchilada's next time. My wife didn't want Mexican food and had the Salmon. This is why we didn't go to Uncle Julio's to begin with. She enjoyed her meal."

  • "Thank you for the tasty and wonderful GF options, not to mention a dipping bread instead of being told " sorry the bread is not for you." Wait staff was friendly and professional. My non GF counterparts noted no difference in taste on the GF Quesadilla appetizer. Will definately return to try other GF Menu options."

  • "We made reservations on line for Friday when NYAJ was running an anniversary special- we wanted a table not a booth and the were able to accommodate. The promotion was an entree and dessert/appetizer for 19.94 and it was an incredible amount of food, well prepared and served expertly. Our party of 4 had 3 appetizers, and shared a special chocolate dessert. We took almost half home and had another meal. One note- the Not Your Average Lemonade cocktail was wonderful- not too sweet, not to tart and went down soooooooo nice."

  • "The food was amazing and the service was great. All their food is made fresh and from scratch daily and the foccacia bread with the dipping oil was out of this world."

  • "Very crowded and noisy (good for some, others not so much). Food did not disappoint. Will return someday very early and hope to have dinner before the noise builds."

  • "This was our second time at this restaurant in the past 2 months. Both times we went with the same friends. First time, mid week, for lunch, and this time for dinner. Both experiences will mean we will be back another time. This time we went on a Saturday night at 7:15. Expected it to be overly crowded and we would be rushed. Was moderately crowded and we were not rushed, ate outside (perfect night), the service was excellent and the food the same. Menu is varied, there is something for everyone. Highly recommend."

  • "I walked past this restaurant many times, never intending to try it (just because the name -- never heard of it before). Anyway, gave it a try on a late, weekend dinner whim -- mainly because of the on-line reviews it received. What a surprise -- food was really delicious. While I was thinking "comfort foods," presentation was really "foodie" quality -- at a not so fancy a price! Highly recommend steak frites, meatloaf, and fish & chips dinner...while they may sound like comfort food restaurant names, they were served with "foodie" style with big-time tastes/flavors! The coconut shrimp and crispy dumplings appetizers were equally fantastic & flavorful. This restaurant will remain on our list -- and will definitely return...many times!"

  • "skirt meat steak was good but pasta was so over cooked. expensive for quality and portion."

  • "The food and service were excellent. However the ticket time to get our meal was rather long."

  • "Great food and service. The side salad served had some of the freshest and flavorful veggies I have ever eaten. The Rosemary Scallop dish was very flavorful. Scallops were tender and delicious. Good beer list. The complementary olive oil and cheese served with the bread was delicious. The only qualm I had is the Dumpling appetizer. While the dumplings themselves were good, they were soaked too long in the soy sauce which overwhelmed the other flavors."

  • "It was the first time here for four of the group and your chef did not disappoint. All food arrived at the right temp and was presented well. The late afternoon rays of the sun made for a request of the wait staff to lower a blind. The AC made for comfortable dining."

  • "They went out of their way to accommodate our party of 9 on a Friday night even though we were told 6 was the limit between 5pm - 8 pm. The reservation was for 6 at 6 but they said we could call back later and be"wait listed" for 9, which we did. They called back and asked us if we wanted indoors or out, letting us know we would be facing the sun outdoors. We took indoors. The tables were set up when we arrived at 6pm. No two orders were the same. Everything was very good as was the friendly service. Even though it was busy, we didn't feel rushed. It was very noisy but we could hear our own conversations. The really large portions are easily divided to take some home, which most of us did. We ranged in age from 15 to 81."

  • "NYAJs moved into our new 'strip mall' several months ago. We tried them out almost immediately. So glad we did. Kudos to an 'all scratch' kitchen that more often than not, hits it out of the park. My picky teens like it and the wife and I love the unique twists on old classics and trying new things. Not every dish is a hit...the cod and crab cake was swimming in broth...very good but the crab cake fell apart. The flank steak was ok as well. I make better. But everything else was superb. My only complaint: the bar service is slow if you're at a table. Not sure if it's the bar itself or the wait staff. If latter, playing zone defense with the tables (any staff can assist with filling drinks, getting more bread, etc) works better."

  • "Took my friend, husband, and cousin here for lunch after church. Had enough food for lunch the next day! Tried the peanut butter ice cream cake and it was to die for! Waiter was good and had a great personality. Love the fact that we can make reservations through Open Table!"

  • "I have been here multiple times.I genuinely like the restaurant a lot and it's food. However, it has it's fair share of problems.1st being service. It is very hit or miss.My trip today was a miss.Food items were forgotten to be ordered. Which is not good especially when one of those items is a kids meal. Our refills for drinks were very slow, to the point I asked other servers for a refill. The kids meals come with dessert. The server didn't seem to know this and never even thought to bring them out. Nor did he ask if the adults wanted dessert. It was Father's Day and I was supposed to receive a gift card. I asked the server who had no clue and started to argue with me. I eventually told him to ask his manager. Then he came back with it."

  • "We love the food at NYAJ. It's amazing! The past two evenings we dined at your restaurant, we've had a difficult waitress. And by difficult I mean, she asked to many questions and tried to engage us too much, where it felt like monopolization & interruption. Additionally we were placed next to a family. This family was playing with their child outside of a highchair or stroller, intentionally causing the child to scream repeatedly. We requested that someone speak to the parents, but the hostess refused. Instead, we were reseated, and a manager in training saw us, and schmoozed us patronizingly. Good food...bad service"

  • "I have decided that NYAJ is my absolute favorite place to go to, for not only the wonderful food, but the great atmosphere. I love that they use Open Table to allow reservations to be made. Wish more places did this! We were celebrating my birthday and NYAJ had given me a coupon for my birthday gift and that was really outstanding too! "

  • "Food was okay, but I wish I would've ordered something else. Server was really nice but seemed a bit overwhelmed. He was however super helpful in helping us select wine and it was half off!"

  • "Slowly, I'm falling out of love with NYAJ...not sure why, maybe we go too often. In any case, this last time I ordered one of their specials-- linguine with clams and was very disappointed. It was VERY heavy-- too much cheese I think. And I love cheese, but this dish should be lighter with more liquid. Service was good as usual. My husband enjoyed his enchiladas and our daughter always gets the clam chowder so she was happy."

  • "The evening started with a dirty booth the the server forgot to put in our cocktail order and brought my brother the wrong beer. We ordered a bottle of wine with dinner which neither the server or bar could get right. The bottle never arrived at the table and then they tried to serve it when we were already done eating. The only good thing was that the food was well prepared and delicious. We talked to the manager about all of the issues and he offered the bottle of wine on the house. We told him thatwe ddidn't want to stay any longer and would like the check. He ended up comping our evening which we didn't ask for but was a more than fair solution. The staffneeds some senvious training from cleaning to service and bar management."

  • "The food was great, the service was fantastic - I ordered some fancy margarita that tasted like chalk, and when I told the server I wasn't enjoying it, she offered to bring me something new (which I took her up on and enjoyed a standard margarita). The restaurant was really loud - I was rather surprised to see a manager running around yelling at everyone he encountered... yes, we were seated near the kitchen, but he has to be aware that his voice travels and he looks like a complete jerk. In general, that made this place amazing for people-watching. The place was packed so I was glad we had a reservation, but our food still came out quickly and was really amazing. My only complaint was my salad coming out with my meal instead of before"

  • "Our favorite local restaurant. Great separated atmosphere of outdoor seating, casual dining, and bar. The menu is very diverse with amazing specials. "

  • "First the wine and beer we ordered was out, then our first two choices on the menu they were out of...poorly stocked, but food we got was still good!"

  • "I am so glad that a friend recommended this place! My family loves it! My children require special dietary need items (nut allergy especially). NYAJ adjusts and tailors their meal just for them. I love and appreciate that! I will rarely take them anywhere else now. They ask for it by name about every evening. The staff is awesome, the location is good, and the food is DIVINE! "

  • "Not Your Average Joe was a last-minute selection for Mother's Day and the staff was very welcoming at the door despite the Mother's Day crush of people waiting in line. Our waiter was cheerful and the focaccia bread was great-even though cold-and was quite the finger food while waiting for the meal. Our food was okay, nothing to go head-over-heals for yet the restaurant is a nice selection for a special moment that needs something more classy than a Chili's or Applebee's. "

  • "Our Mother's Day lunch was great. Not Your Average Joes was a very busy and popular restaurant, with lines of people waiting without reservations, but part of our party got there a little early and they sat them right away (thanks to our OpenTable reservation). The food was excellent and our server was awesome. I highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions as they are wonderful."
