A word from Not Your Average Joe's Watertown
What does creative casual cuisine mean?
Exactly what it says. We’re creative, because we reject the same-old-same-old in favor of tastes that are interesting and unique. We’re casual because while our food may be worth getting dressed up for, we invite you to come as you are. We’re all about cuisine in the sense that our chefs apply high standards of culinary art.
There it is. Creative. Casual. Cuisine. If it sounds like your kind of place, then you – like us- are not your average Joe.

  • "After doing a charity 5K we went for lunch. We were starving!!! We got seated right away (yay opentable reservations) and our meals came out pretty quick. This is a good place with a great varied menu what changes. They usually have nice specials as well."

  • "We enjoy eating at the Watertown Not Your Average Joes. The opening bread and olive oil dip is a meal itself. The menu has good variety and the service makes you feel they want to serve you,"

  • "We scheduled a group for a lunch fundraiser. The staff was attentive and accommodating which meant that our group of thirteen didn't take too long a lunch away from work. Also, there were substantial street closures that day due a funeral and the restaurant contacted me to make sure I knew what was going on and what our options for parking were."

  • "I always have a great time at Joe's. The meals are delicious and varied enough and exactly what I expect. The service is excellent even when there is a full house."

  • "I tend to have mixed feelings about NYAJ.. I could eat their bread and olive oil all night... Sometimes their food comes out just right and some times I leave disappointed.. Will always go back for bread and drinks... Wait staff is the same depends on their mood I suppose"

  • "Everything we had from fish to burgers, just great. Visited our son in college (Waltham) and was looking for a place to eat locally...FOUND IT! The homemade bread that we started with was amazing. Pulled pork sliders on pretzel bits, super.Turkey burger, great. Cod with bok choy, outstanding. The best part is we don't have to go into Boston to get a great meal. Basically, ate there twice in a 3-day visit."

  • "My girlfriend and I love the Winesday.. we meet every Wednesday and take advantage of the fantastic deal for a nice bottle of wine and 2 entrees for $40 !! Great Service and nice location, great time"

  • "We were so glad to make a reservation and be seated immediately on a busy Sunday night. The food was delicious......coq au vin and grilled ahi tuna. We were so Pleasantly surprised by the many food choices and the quality of the meals. My cocktail of peach infused Grey Goose vodka, white wine and lemonade. (Pear sangria) Was superb! It is noisy with young families, but it is possible to be in a quiet corner. Just ask!"

  • "This is a great place for just about any event you have... date night, girls night, a group of people wanting to go out, family night out!But there is a server there that is not the nicest person. She's an older woman with blonde hair so watch out for her!"

  • "We were seated immediately upon arrival even though the No Your Average Joe's was very busy. Service was excellent - server very helpful and friendly. Bread and oil dip fantastic Food is very good. Not gourmet but commensurate with the price paid. Great Neighborhood restaurant!"

  • "The service was great. The food, not much. The food was okay but nothing spectacular, especially for the prices."

  • "I had the mustard chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes which was very good. My guest had a barbecue chicken pizza which she enjoyed. For dessert I had the tiramisu which was delicious and my guest had the peanut butter pie. We both had a freshly brewed cup of coffee with dessert. Even though the restaurant was busy, the service was very good and we did not feel rushed. I will go there again when I visit Watertown."

  • "We ate here between appointments for my sister's wedding dress shopping. Our mom, her future mother in law and one of her other bridesmaids were all together. Everyone was impressed with the choice of restaurant and greatly enjoyed their food. Our server was very good and refilled our drinks without needing to be asked."

  • "We go to NYAJs about once a month. Reservations are a must - this spot is always packed. The food is great, drinks are old reliables and new tastes, and there's generally great service."

  • "It's the same as all the others in the chain. Great with kids. More interesting than Applebee's but not any better quality. Perhaps more expensive, though. It's an easy option for a large group when needing to accommodate many different needs. Beyond that, it's average chain restaurant food."

  • "Came here with my boyfriend for Winesday and had a great time, the server was very friendly and easy to talk to, the food and wine options were great for the price of $39.99. My only suggestion would to have more vegetarian options on the Winesday list as to not limit anyone from participating. Great value!"

  • "Not your Average used to be one of my favorites places to eat. After my recent visit I won't be in a hurry return. Quality of foods has gone down hill . The portion sizes have shrunk considerably"

  • "Though not a high end gourmet restaurant, we have found the the Watertown NYAJ to consistently provide very good to excellent food, drinks, and ambience, and an exceptional value for overall quality, earning 5 stars overall. Weekends can get noisy but not so you can't hear each other. Otherwise the noise level is moderate. Wait staff is variable but generally attentive and accommodating. Again, excellent value for moderately priced dining."

  • "It was valentine's Day. I have flow vision and my wife is left handed. I asked for and we sat at the pizza bar gazing into the heart and sitting side-by-side. Amy's service was great and the food delicious. We both tried your specials. Not much better than that. Thank you until next time."

  • "Had a great experience at NYAJ's in Watertown MA for dinner on Valentines day. We decided to go back for seconds the next day. However, instead of visiting NYAJ's in Watertown for dinner, we went to the location in Methuen MA for lunch. Ordered the exact same dishes from the previous night, and it didn't even compare. Service was painfully slow (the restaurant was not busy), our food was cold and bland. The mousse tort we ordered was not moist, the proportions were not balanced, and they left off the scoop of whipped cream that came with it the previous night. Next time we think about visiting NYAJs we will have to consider the extra time and distance we'll have to travel to take advantage of the best of what they have to offer."

  • "Dad and I were thoroughly satisfied with a seafood special at NYA Joe's. Although the price point was a bit high at $19.99, it was worth the price. We also share a delicious fruit dessert. Nice celebration. Glad that we made a reservation as it good busy quickly, even early!"

  • "Usually one of our favorite dinner places for nice meals at a reasonable cost. Salad and dessert were excellent. Service was very good as well. Unfortunately we struck out on 2 main courses, both of which we had before there and loved them Steak, ordered medium rare, had no pink at all...overcooked Scallops were smaller than before, over-cooked, and dry. They are usually moist. Staff was very apologetic about steak, so we didn't bother to mention the scallops. We'd still give it another try, as we really like Joe's"

  • "Love their Chicken Piccata. The bread and dipping oil is terrific! The staff was very accommodating! Definitely recommend to friends. Also I like that they are supporting The Gore Place in Waltham! Gore Place has a local farm. Great way to give back to the community!"

  • "NYAJ's consistently performs well. Across restaurants within the franchise, creative (yet not over-the-top) main courses at affordable prices and appealing special offers keep me going back. The decor is tasteful, if pre-packaged, the atmosphere (during peak hours) is lively, and service ranges from sufficient to superior. Of particular note are the rosemary-skewered scallops and the turkey kabobs, and the weekly promotional "Winesday." Check it out, if you've not done so already!"

  • "Met up with friends. Food is reliably good. Our waiter was a little distracted / inattentive -- kept forgetting to bring water. Noise level is fine for carrying on a conversation. Overall, a good experience."
